I suffer from the same problem all brought on from an ear infection 5 years ago. It started with loss of balance to begin with that went away quickly and left me with a ringing in my ear. Then I got the crackling of the Eustachian tube and pulsating tinnitus in the form of a heart beat sound in my ear. What i can tell you is for me it eventually improved. My brain habituated to the sounds. I still have the tinnitus but most of the time i never hear it. And I also still have the crackling when I swallow, but that has improved to a point where i only hear it if I stop and think about it. Sorry I don't have a cure to share with you Dan. I do know what you're going through and I really hope your symptoms improve soon like they did for me. It did take a couple of years before the pulsating tinnitus and the crackling improved to a point where it didn't bother me. As you probably know from doing your own research the ear infection has damaged the tiny bones in your inner ear that have caused the phantom sounds if you have any. And the crackling sounds is the Eustachian tube sticking together creating a pop/crackling noise. Keep listening to music but keep the volume to a reasonable level until your symptoms improve. The brain should habituate to the sounds in time. However, still go and see your ENT to make sure nothing else can be done in the mean time. It will improve the just keep on being strong and don't let it get you down too much.

I have the same thing, I've had it for about 2yrs and its still there but I'm more used to it and have just accepted it. So doesn't really stop me doing anything, just the swallowing and constant changes in ear pressure feeling is really annoying, yea, sometimes i get head aches to but used to them also :P For me its a hell of a lot worse if im thinking about it, if im playing games or am out i don't realize it much.
@shaolinbladeV
@shaolinbladeV 10 лет назад
Chili Master You're totally right about not focusing on it. The more you focus on it the more blood will pump through your ears making you feel much worse. I remember when i first got the ear problems I was dreaming and i literally woke up in tears because in my dream I thought I'd never be able to appreciate music again, it was truly awful. I promised i'd share my experience with anyone who was going through the same thing and tell them it will get better because for me I thought my world had ended at that point. Our hearing is one of our main senses, so for it to change even slightly it will effect is greatly. But, our body and our brain is very good at adapting and habituating. We just have to be strong and believe it will improve even though we might feel there is no hope. The more we try and live a normal life with this problem, the quicker our brain will become used to the change.

I know how hard it is. Also with having Aspergers and depression and such doctors just LOVE blaming that as the cause of everything, and straight up diagnose it as "being in your head", "You're making it up", "You're lying". Keep strong Daniel, your music has helped me get through many days, and you've made me a stronger person.

Hey Dan, to help keep your spirits up I'm going to tell you something about yourself you had no idea existed. On my iPhone I have a playlist of all of your music from iTunes that I listen to whenever I'm feeling down or I have some photography to do. I throw it on and listen to your voice rapping about games and holes, complaints and halos and it changes my mood so much and it doubles my work quality and output. Keep doing what you're doing and keep your chin up because you touch and influence so many people in so many ways and I don't think that any of us who listen to you could ever imagine a world without Dan Bull (Douglby)

I know how you feel mate. Since 2007 my right ears hearing got worst and worst, right to the point of me losing 50% hearing in my right ear. After 2 unsuccessful surgeries, I've end up losing about 50% in my left ear as well... After being "officially half deaf", about a year ago, I've started using hearing aids, for both ears. I was always into music, and this has affected me and pushed me down with making music, but after finding your channel few years ago, I've started writing again and actually recording it. You might not remember me, but we've spoken few times on Twitter and private pms on youtube. Don't let it get you down, you're a source of inspiration and that alone can never be beaten!

This really seems like a case of waiting for too long expecting the best and getting the worst. It's a terrible thing to do and I don't recommend it at the least. I had ear problems of my own and waited too long, almost went deaf. I also had a small protrusion in my neck waited too long; ended up with throat cancer, go figure. You really just can't be afraid to reach out and tell someone, because a little help never hurt anybody. It's what saved my life and it very well may do the same to you.

Thank you, every one, I just don't want Dan going through the same shit I did. I was in and out of hospitals and every timed I looked back I realized(not out of malice) that it was partially my fault that I didn't tell anyone. I'm a shy lad, yes, but that's almost what took my life. You can't just ignore it and expect it to get better. And Daniel, get well soon. I'm gonna check the good ol' internet for a solution to your problem and see if I can find anything to help Matane~!(Japanese romanization for "See you later/soon")

This may help: voices.yahoo.com/what-causes-crackling-ears-7395810.html This person is saying you could treat this similarly to sinus allergies: inhaling some warm steam, decongestants, and nasal sprays. I read up on ETD and our Eustachian tube is fairly important(as you has said) for regulating the pressure between your ears, nose, and throat. "The Eustachian tube is a long, thin tube that runs from the middle ear to the back of the throat. This tube opens and closes to equalize pressure between the middle ear and the outside environment, which is important when you're descending a mountain or a passenger on an airplane that's landing." As you can see, it's kinda like climbing a mountain or descending a high altitude in a plane or something. Come to think of it, didn't you do a rap on top of a mountain? Huh, maybe that could have been a factor? Was that before or after February? Not sure, maybe you can clarify that. I'll keep you posted on what I find, Dan. You're one of my favorite youtube and non/youtube artists. Hope you find something that works for you. We'll be in touch Ciao
@NyxDiscordia33
@NyxDiscordia33 10 лет назад
Alright, Dan, I just got a confirmation from my mom(she's a nurse and she's going for her RN currently, been doing it for seemingly my whole life and I'm 19) that the only real ways to deal with ETD is decongestants, nasal sprays, and inhaling warm steam. I would say try the steam or nasal spray first and foremost. From what I can tell, it's somewhat related to a sinus-type deal, and when it comes to sinuses, a lot of people recommend eating something spicy to sort of open up all of your tubes and valves and whatnot, but, yeah, take that as you will.

***** Some causes of ear popping are tinnitus, common colds, nasal allergies such as hay fever,etc; , middle ear infections, Meniere's disease or fluid in the ear from swimming or showering, ; sinus infections; TMJ; or poss sensoneural hearing loss. So why does my ear sometimes make funny crackling & popping noises? Earwax or even a piece of hair could be lying on top of the eardrum and when the eardrum vibrates, it may cause funny noises (just like a piece of string on a lightly beating drum). Obviously, treatment is by removal. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction can also cause crackling/popping noises. Given the eustachian tube is lined with mucosa which is moist, sometimes the surface may become sticky from inflammation such that any movement whether it be an opening motion or sliding would cause crackling/popping noises. Again, treatment in this case is with steroids nasal sprays for a period of about 6 weeks.

I used to have the crackly sensation in my ears before - went after a few years. I guess because I'm prone to ear infections anyway (due to narrow ear canals) I'm not massively aware of it...My hearing is shit because of tinnitus working with dogs and listening to loud music, so I guess I've desensitised myself from it. Only strange thing is that after the cracking went from my ear...my jaw became very popp-y/clicky/crackly. ETD, however, is the fluid in your ear thickening because of a cough/cold...and I guess certain infections of the middle ear. Apparently inhaling steam with your mouth open (so head under a towel, over a sink of hot water) can help relieve the problem, having your mouth open can help maximise the amount of steam you inhale. Do this until your ears crackle or your nose starts to run. Then blow one nostril until there is nothing left to blow - then blow the other the same way. Decongestants and nose-sprays could also help as well. I hope it goes after time...if not - push the doctors for results. Don't let them walk all over you. I always think that GPs take more care with things, but that's only a small amount. Good luck! :)

You are one of the best youtubers out there dan. Keep up the good work. You dont get to give up just because something is hard. You will figure this thing out. To me it sounds like a pressure build up, like exactly what happens to me when I have a cold and im flying in an airplane. Have you been on any airplanes this year? It sounds stupid (and i feel stupid recommending it) but what if some intense pressure like high altitude could somehow shock you back to normal? That one commenter mentioned holding his nose and breath and blowing helps him. Same thing on flights. Hang in there Dan. Im sure a medical cure for this exists. You have very real talent, dont let this bring you down, not even an inch.

Hi Dan, I live in the US, and in the early '00s I started having random vertigo issues, and went to ear doctors and they said I had water in my right ear. But there was nothing they could do but prescribe water pills. I still had the issue off and on, and they kept saying the same thing. Fast forward to 2007 and I wake up one morning with a slight ringing in my right ear, and I noticed music in particular sounded almost out of tune in that ear. So I went to the doctor again and they said I had water on the ear still. More water pills. Then the vertigo started much more frequently, and by 2009 instead of just ringing, it was louder ringing, a crackling noise and hissing.. Preceding the vertigo, I'd have a full ear feeling. I went to a specialist again and this time they used this torture-like device that shot hot and cold pressurized air into each ear... When they did that in the right ear, especially with cold, I'd get vertigo. I also had my hearing checked and I had lost about 40% hearing in that ear. They diagnosed me with Meniere's Disease. I still have issues with water in that ear, and they told me there is nothing much they can do about it. It's 2013 now and I've lost about 80% of the hearing in that ear, and every time there is a rapid change in temperature and humidity, I get random attacks of vertigo, to the point where I can be outside, walking, and have it hit and I just fall to the ground. It's also starting to affect my left ear, especially in cold weather. I can barely make out stuff said on TV some days, and it's hard to hear people at normal talking levels. All of this, on to of the fact I lost my left eye to retinoblastoma in 1973, and I'm experiencing eye issues in my right eye due to chronic dry eye and high blood pressure. I can sympathize with you, and I really hope they find a way to get your ears better. I wish I had your fight and gumption, because most of the time I feel depressed and think about what it might be like with no hearing or sight... But your video actually make me want to start fighting against my own ailments, and I guess it's kind of nice to know I'm not the only one with dual sensory issues! Keep up the fight! :)

The exact same thing happened to me: ear infection, 1st left, than the right one, after the infection was gone, the crackling sound appeared on all frequencies and than...after 5 years... i just hear the crackling sound on sudden high mid frequencies...I just got used to it and learned to live and work with them... And no one has any cure... (I am from Romania so the medical system is a lot more fucked than the one from your country). This kind of ear infection happened to me when I was at Myrtle Beach. It was only temporary, thankfully. I don't know much about it, but I'd suggest staying away from water, and making sure all the fluids drain, if there are any, out of the infected ear without intermission. About the fizzing in your ear, it is likely because part of the tissue near the ear has corroded, or the eardrum could've been damaged. If it was, it'll be expensive. It's likely that the bones around the eardrum were hurt, which may explain the cracks you hear. Other than that, you should check a doctor or something. Best of luck, Dan. I hope to see that you're okay.

It would appear Dan is suffering from a form of Tinnitus named Diplacusis Dysharmonica. One of the few side affects being ETD. Few things cause Diplacusis but I would put my best bet on that which whatever caused the eyesight problem caused this also and what with being a Music Producer, the strain from both fronts have caused damage. Treatment is there if you see a specialist but you must make the problem apparent. Many doctors will say it's temporary, reduce ear strain, wash your ears out regularly or other generic things. Both issues need to be sorted asap.

DAN PLEASE READ, it sounds like you NEED tubes put in your ears to stop the liquid building up in them (this is what often makes the pop sound).

Dan, you changed my life by helping me smile through hard times. You were the first channel I ever subscribed too, you inspired my video recording dream, which was shortly shut down because I was poor equipped. We live so far away from each other, but I feel when I watch your videos we are close. You are an amazing rapper, and vocalists. Thank you, for saving my life from depression.

i had a friend with who ended up with what sound like the same symptoms you have. apparently it was mucus built up in your eustachian tube(as you said). it lasted for him up to about 8 months it is normal for it to last a very long time especially if not treated properly. apparently you can reduce the crackling if you let steam go up your nose starts to run then blow out each nostril to clear them out.

Hey Dan, I had this problem as a child. I was very young, so I apologize if i'm a bit foggy on the details. I had several ear infections as a child. As I recall they were a result of my ear drum being busted and flooded with some sort of fluid. This was fixed a few times by having artificial tubes inserted into my ears, however it was only temporary. EDIT: What you seem to be describing in the video later seems to be at least similar to what I had, as the last surgery I had dealt with my ears, nose and throat, and i was no longer required to have the tubes put in. EDIT (again): I'm not sure the last surgery would help in your case, however I do believe you should look into artificial tubes for your ears, as far as I understand and remember, it's relatively easy and quick procedure.

Well those 'tubes' in your ear do indeed regulate air pressure, they're connected in the back of your throat/nose which is how this infection must of crossed ears. Just because you don't have pain, that doesn't mean the infection has passed. This crackling is caused by the fact your tubes are blocked by a fluid produced at the top of your ear, then as air works its way through the liquid in your ears it pops out, like blowing bubbles in a drink. This normally goes away fairly after a couple weeks of an infection, but perhaps the blockage in your sinuses isn't allowing the infection to pass, which means you need to get rid of it as quickly as possible or it'll just build up and get more and more set in your ears. Heres my suggestions for possible fixes to this: - Buy a "Sinus Irrigation kit", will possibly clear out the blockage and allow it to pass through. - Nasal Decongestants. Pretty common, can find them easily. - Steaming, get a bowl of hot water and place your head over the bowl and cover it with a towel, so you breath in all the steam. You can combine this with a nasal decongestant like vics or albas oil. - Place heated pads/hot rags next to your ears. Reduces pain, reduces swelling, and increases blood flow to the area. - Nasal Steroids (from your doctor), would reduce any swelling if they're swollen, meaning they'd clear easier - Get a myringotomy OR pressure equalisation tubes. This operation would involve having your ear drum cut to allow it to drain. Ask our doctor about this. I would be surprised if none of these helped, but some require daily use and dedication to help. Get well soon Dan.

As someone who has also dealt with depression, I think this is a very admirable thing to do. Going out and publicly admitting this to your tens of thousands of fans is a pretty brave thing to do, and it speaks to your character. As you said, you just need to stay determined and try to keep buggering on.

Hey Dan, I have had tinitus since i was born and being a musician and a keen lover and listener of music its effected me my whole life. Just like you when i keep myself busy i can ignore it. I've always seen it as a positive since it's always encouraged me write better music and heighten my music analyses. All i can say is to push through for the sake of all the people you help with your music. From a first hand point of view your talent alone has helped me via inspiration and motivation through wanting to be as good as you at what i do. I know how hard it is to fight through depression from things that bring your life down. Everyone goes through these times in their lives. Sometimes it's really tough to motivate yourself to get out of bed and do something. You feel like there's nothing good right now or in the future, but you have to remember that no matter how much life brings you down, you gotta fight back. You're an awesome dude and an inspiration for so many. With almost 438,000 subscribers and so many views, you just have to think of all those people whose lives you have changed. It may not seem like much, but every little thing that you do changes the whole world, even if by a tiny bit. Those tiny bits do add up, over time, and in the end, the world is a completely different place with you here and with the decisions you made. I love your videos and you have changed my views on a lot of different ideas. I'm just one person you've affected, but I know there's thousands and thousands more. I hope you're able to find a way to fight through all of this. Stay strong and you'll find your motivation again :)

I've had ear infections like that before (crackling and pressure stuff), because my ear holes are smaller than normal, and often get clogged up with ear wax which causes said infections. I wouldn't consider myself an expert on it, but I'll try to help. You could get a friend or family member to take a look at your ears for you if doctors keep insisting not to, just to check if it is a problem with ear wax. A flashlight will help with this. If the wax is really dark brown and in clumps then that could be a sign that that's the problem (though this may just be an indication that it's infected, which you already know). In which case you should be able to get some stuff to disolve it from a regular clinic I believe, though Im not sure if you're supposed to use it without direction from a doctor. If that still doesn't help, and you don't meet another doctor reluctant to do their damned job, you can ask a doctor to find you someone who can clear it out. They can do so via plastic syringe, which they fill with hot water and flush it out, if I remember rightly (they might use stuff to dissolve it before flushing it, I forget the exact procedure). Or they can suck it out with a thin vacuum thing, similar to what dentists use I think. Sorry if this is totally not the problem, or is something you've already tried. Medical problems are always hard to diagnose, especially if your doctor is doing fuck all to help. Hope it gets better, I know how depressing it is to not be able to hear properly. :(

Dear Dan, I had the same problem. I learned that finding out the angle it happens can prevent some of the pain. I know it can be hard to eat, but after a while my popping started to get more quiet as well. The first year is the worst then after that it went away, mostly. Because this runs in my family we know a little bit about how it goes. Just try and take a break and make sure to make it a point to those around you. Hope yours lessens soon and be well. Though it never goes away as far as my family know sorry D: We love your music and it makes all of us feel connected. Oh I thought of some other things to say. There will be a point where it becomes painful to move your mouth wide enough to eat. Min got so bad I could only open mine half way. That is the worst part. Then when you accept it a bit more you won't notice the popping. Remember the biggest warning of the bad part is when the popping adds in a splintering sound/feeling and you know the difficulty is coming for maybe a few weeks. Good luck!
