Seriously people have nothing better to do than complain about a mom wanting the best for her kids.
@thenourway
@thenourway 3 месяца назад
They probably feel guilty about their own actions. I get this DAILY from my own mother. She keeps threatening to order a pizza 😂 so I “take a break” but it breaks my heart.
@annm3064
@annm3064 3 месяца назад
I feel part of the issue is how the lady basically said "I do the best for my kids by not buying store bought. Everything in the store is poison." Not every mother can devote hours to cooking. Thus they feel shamed. Honestly we should find a better way to support and not judge other mothers.
@gorgo4910

It is so crazy that people have just accepted that ultra processed foods are terrible but still think you need to feed them to your kids so they have a “healthy relationship” with “food”. How about we expect more from big companies to stop making poison and stop supporting them until they do!

I LOVE your podcast! I discovered it last year some time while diving deep into Biblical Parenting. Since the interview you did with the author of "M is for Mamma", I have watched/listened to almost EVERY episode, AND I went back to watch the episodes from before I tuned in. Seriously I've learned sooooo much. The knowledge I've gleaned from your show has helped mr become a more present mother to my 4 children, a more intentional wife and homemaker, a healthier individual, as well as working to improve my family's health. Im not 100% organic, gluten free or seed oil free yet, BUT we are making great strides for change in our houshold. I'd say we are 80% there. Thank you for what you do in bringing the information to the forefront to be shared with the world.

I just want to say this podcast has really changed my life! I started listening to you in October of 2023 and have learned so much from you and the guests you have on. I went vegan from the age of 20-26 because of how poorly animals are treated in commercial farms. When she started to describe their living conditions it actually made me cry. I started eating meat again almost 2 years ago due to health issues but was buying the poor quality stuff from the grocery store. When I found your podcast I got motivated to find a local farm to buy meat from. I was able to find a regenerative and humane certified farm to buy beef from that’s only an hour away from me. I also started exclusively buying grass fed butter, tallow, and milk. I still have a lot of progress to make when it comes to the cheese and bread I use but the switches I’ve made in the 8 months I’ve been listening to your podcast have had such a big impact on my life. I feel so much healthier and literally never crave snacks or sugar. Thank you so much for all the good information you put out into the world!

I have to admit…I was irritated when I saw her homemade goldfish reel. I thought, “this woman has way too much time on her hands!” But, I am really glad I watched this episode. She did a great job explaining why we should eat real food vs processed food, and explaining how it’s actually very economical. And I appreciated that she encourages people to start off tackling one thing at a time. All in all, the advice she gave was very practical - which is not the impression I had of her at first!

That’s too funny! It’s actually a lady that lives and serves her family just like me! My oldest son is 8 and does not consume sugar at all, along with the rest of our household. I cook literally everything from scratch myself, and I have for years. I get so many rude looks and comments every single time we say “no thank you” to sugar or processed snacks at kids activities. And I suppose that’s the division of me from her… I WILL NOT bend just because we are at a kids bday party. I do however just pack our own snacks, and or bday type treats instead, and my kids don’t feel they are lacking at all. :)

Sigh. I'm getting tired of wealthy people telling me to "just cut your streaming services and you'll be able to afford organic." Well, we don't have any streaming services, we don't even watch tv. And, oftentimes, I can't make a purely organic haul as much as I'd like to. It's a little more nuanced than that. I'm not picking the crappy, $4.99 tiny box of organic blueberries when the non-organic are often BOGO and 4x the size. And believe me, I'm well aware of the fact that blueberries are on EWG's Dirty Dozen list, but when my husband works a hard manual labor job, I have to give him more than 10 blueberries in his lunch. Lady, you just focus on getting healthy, free range chickens from your parents, and I'll keep my eyes peeled for the marked-down, manager special cuts of meat at the only grocery store in my town so I can save money, thank u. And before anybody comes at me in the comments I appreciate what this lady does for her kids and think it's absolutely DUMB that she got cancelled for making homemade goldfish crackers.

@@schmellen88 our 1 & 3 year olds inhale the blueberries. We get the pesticides free ones, it's $12 a bag for a 5lb bag. You can also do $10 for a 5lb of organic strawberries or mangos. Since it's an hour away you can buy 2 bags at a time. We use them for everything- oatmeal, smoothies, out of the bag, muffins etc and go through a bag in 2 weeks. I would highly recommend the Costco membership, they carry a lot of great organic options at good prices. Organic carrots, mangos, veggies, rice, beans etc. It is worth it.

@@schmellen88 As a single income family ourselves, I thought the same thing. But I drive an hour now once a month to do my grocery shopping for our family of now 5. I buy from costco and natural grocers (all organic) and spend probably $600ish a month on groceries. We buy our meat in bulk from a local farmer once a year with our tax refund along with 2 gallons of raw milk every week. We do not make a lot of money at all. We are on the low end of the spectrum but making things from scratch and not buying snack food has saved us SO much money on groceries. I used to spend over $1000 on groceries. Now I do not and it has saved us in this economy. We do a 90/10 lifestyle honestly but even being able to do a 70/30 like someone said above is still better.

YES!! You totally get it!!! ITS A DRUG!! In the ingredients they list "autolyzed yeast" and "spices" both are used as cover terms by the food industry for MSG. MSG is an excitatory neurotoxin, it creates addictive behaviors and literally damages brain cells. It's actually hard to research because the food industry lobbies have done A TON of funding to flood the media with propaganda about MSG being safe. They even have industry funded studies claiming it's safe. HOWEVER, i started reading medical literature due to a loved one having dementia and I realized they use MSG to induce dementia in mice!!! Also used to induce diabetes and obesity. 🤯

When it comes to cost, I have seen it myself that investing in higher quality whole foods is absolutely cheaper at the end of the month. I did the whole low fat, sugar free, lower calorie versions of everything in an effort to be "healthier", but I was always hungry and needed a little something more to feel satiated. Since switching to regeneratively farmed food, full of it's natural fats, my husband and I have both lost weight, we're rarely hungry between meals, and end up spending less each week on groceries.

LOVE these guests, Alex! I'm 24, and my health journey is at the stage of making more and more things from scratch! I'm already making my own whole wheat bread from scratch, and it's soooo much better than storebought bread. I want to get into making my own sourdough, salad dressings, mayo, flour, etc, but it all seems so daunting, and I only have so much time after my 9-5! 😭 But when you have guests like Gretchen on, I can go through their material and get inspired on how to do it myself! Also, I think Erica Komisar is _exactly_ right: some "mom guilt" and "mom shaming" is GOOD, because it should galvanize us to DO BETTER for our _children's_ sake! That's good!! Modern women just don't want to hear that they could be doing better, and that the lifestyle of convenience they're living now is harming their children. But they don't want to take that, run with it, and DO better! That's sad. I'm inspired, not ashamed!

I’m a SAHM and I cook all of our meals. Not every single thing I use is from scratch tho. This is my beef-no pun intended-with people like this lady talking about ancestral diets and how we used to eat. What people fail to mention is that these people lived in tribes and they literally worked all day preparing foods TOGETHER!!! Or it was large families living on a generational farm-It wasn’t just one mom who had other things to do and get done. Like, the likelihood that this lady stays home all day long doing nothing else but cooking, planting and harvesting foods all day is very unlikely . People like this are no different than any other influencer who puts out unrealistic lifestyles and makes money off of it. Again, all this to say, I have 20 chickens, 4 turkeys, a milk share for raw milk and cream, get grassfed meat from a local farmer, and have fruit trees and berry bushes and I still do not make everything from scratch because I wouldn’t have time to literally do anything else!!!! That’s why I’m calling this lady out! Lol 😂 she’s doing this for her job!!!

Not a valid point. We have dishwashers, we buy our clothes, we have countless things in our modern life that make this lifestyle doable for everyone. It's a matter of learning and being willing.

@@amandahughes7509 dude, I have chickens( both for laying and meat birds), turkeys, fruit trees, berry bushes, on my two acres of property-it’s a lot to maintain. Do you have anything remotely like that? People think stuff like that just runs itself and it doesn’t at all. So, the likelihood that this lady runs something like that, or greater, cooks from scratch , parents effectively, is a present wife and runs a you tube channel is highly unlikely. It’s just reality. I also live out in the country-so I have an access to a milk share and to grassfed cattle. But that’s my point, I have neighbors who help me maintain that lifestyle-just like tribal/ancestral people had! Most people do not have farmers for neighbors.

She's freely admitted that she's very blessed because her mom does all the farming side of things, she's JUST doing a few productive things (chickens and a small garden). It is very important to specialize, because YOU are right. You cannot do it all!! You can't grow wheat and garden each veg, slaughter cows AND be a five star chef. That's why we have butchers and bakers and candlestick makers. :) Hope that helps.
@laurap9403
@laurap9403 3 месяца назад
@@alyssamurphy2002 exactly-my whole point is ancestral diet/living is not a one-man show. You have to have help. People who live in cities or the suburbs don’t have a ton of access to people skilled in that type of living nor do they have the space to maintain stuff like that on their own. And , like I said, it’s a lot of work to maintain even something minimal out in the country. I mean, chickens and their eggs have a lot of predators. You have to process your own meat chickens. Gardens and fruit trees are susceptible to molds, frosts, rots, and animals that eat your shit. You have to mow and maintain your acreage. I think people think it’s easy and that everyone should be able to do it. It’s weird.

I'm also SO GLAD that it's getting more and more accessible even if it's currently for the wealthy, because in a free market, eventually the plasma screen tv or iphone can wind up in the home of the poorest people! It takes time, and I'm thankful for all the crunchy hippies and crusty farmers before me so that I can at least buy Dave's organic bread and Ezekiel bread until I can afford to get a grain mill. I'm thankful for deer meat and quail from friends. It does take a LOT more effort and time to cook whole meat and wash hair and feathers off.

It truly amazes me how a mom who is just trying to feed her children and learn how to fuel them in healthy ways is deemed a "bad mom" or "mom shaming" but I see moms posting themselves feeding their kids McDonalds and the comment section is full of praise. I don't think either parent is better, but we should be aware that most companies DO NOT care about our well-being. So true what she is saying! My dad grew up in Mexico in a small ranch where all they ate was what they grew themselves or could afford to buy from nearby other families. They raised and butchered their own chickens, pigs, cows, drank raw milk, made their own cheese , grew their corn and made their own nixtamalized masa. My grandmother and aunts would grind their corn on metates (flat volcanic stone similar to a molcajete.) because they had no electricity. He grew up a very simple but beautiful life! I was fortunate enough to experience some of that life myself as a child spending my summers in the ranch and watching my aunts do this. We also had no washing machines so had wash clothes by hand! 😅 Many of the elders there were so healthy because they ate so natural. No fast food or any processed food because it didn’t exist there at the ranch at that time. My dad always said this to me growing up that eating processed food is bad but I didn’t think he was right until now I realize that he was 100% right!

Start with what you can afford and work up from there. Progress not perfection! We prioritize local beef, tallow, lard, and veggies. Then the rest we buy conventional. We have 3 kids 6 and under with #4 on the way so we could never afford to go raw dairy with how much we consume. Hopefully at some point I'll be able to work some into the budget but that's a ways off.

My main issue with people like this is that they make it so all or nothing when making some smaller changes can still have a significant effect. It doesn’t have to be so full-on and overwhelming. For example, pick 1-2 things you eat frequently, and find ways to make them healthier, meal prep one hour a week and store the food in the freezer/fridge. I live in a small studio and no garden, on a low salary, so I couldn’t do most of this but I do what I can that works for me - mostly not organic, but better animal welfare where I can, and no fast food etc.

So I went vegan along with my family about 7 years ago thanks to documentaries like Forks Over Knives convincing me that this is the healthiest and best thing to do. I have been feeling the past year or two that we are doing the wrong thing and slowly we have introduced a little bit of dairy back into our home, and I’ve started making meat for my family but I haven’t been able to bring myself to eat it! I’m still so torn between what is the real truth! I do believe processed is bad but is dairy good? Is meat good? I guess I have a lot of research to do (again) but how to decipher truth from lies?!!

Yes dear this happens. This happened to daughter’s first boyfriend in college. His parents restricted his sweets so much he’s huge now. He could not control the sweet intake. She broke up with him because he treated his finances the same way he treated food and alcohol. Gorging. Everything in moderation dear. Try making goodies at home with monk fruit or stevia. It might help them. I would not be 100 percent restrictive with children like some of the zealots on here. I raised a boy and a girl who are 26 and 28. We always had candy and sweets around. They liked it at the time but barely eat it now as adults. My daughter is no sugar now. My son rarely eats dessert. Very slim and nice looking. You are the only one with sense that hit on that. I commend you the others are so willfully blind. I hope this helps.
