They look really really good. For anyone having a go at this can I suggest that you bed in a plate of aluminium, into the layers of the side, where you will mount them to the bike to give much better rigidity to the pannier walls. You could get the same with bolting a plate in but it would be much stronger resin glued in between the layers.

Strong work on this DIY deal. I have a friend with a bike minus some good bags and he has been itching to get some nice hard bags added. His bike value is $2000 on a good day, and the hard bags would run him $1200 after the mounting hardware is bought. We really wanted to go another way and your video will be the topic of discussion the next time we are in the shop. Thanks for a great video!

I can only see one correction I would make, panniers sets for specific bikes, say BMW 1200, have different size bags on either side to make up for the exhaust coming out 1 side. So at the end of the day when you look at the bike from the read the out edge on either side is the exact same distance away from the middle of the seat. works out to be 44 liters of storage in the right case, 38 liters in the left case, and 31 liters in the topcase.

This was a fantastic build; thanks for sharing! Do you recall what the woven fiberglass cloth "weight" was per yard? It comes in 3oz, 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, 10oz, and 12oz thicknesses at the place I'm shopping.
@kayttajanimi
@kayttajanimi 8 лет назад
Thank you! Actually i don´t even know the thickness of that material. As i said,i went to boat builders workshop and i asked him some sort of heavy duty fiberglass and he had solution for my problem. I have seen those in some random hardware stores,but they were much lighter made. I think it would not hurt anyone to use little bit lighter version,gotta be easier to bent to corners. And it is really thirsty material,have to use a lot of resin.
@pullthepinoutdoors2014
@pullthepinoutdoors2014 8 лет назад
Very Nice job, Did the resin not stick to the aluminum tape at all, or did you put down something as well to help release? Thanks
@kayttajanimi

Alright fellas! Finally i have some decent pictures of those pannier racks i made with a friend of mine.s409.photobucket.com/user/Pekankuvia/library/Pannier%20rack?sort=3&page=1 In two pictures there is a ratchet straps going around panniers and rack,it might be just a overkill. But i tought it can´t harm to use them to secure my trip,there was a hell of a load inside those panniers.

@studio4images
@studio4images 9 лет назад
Excellent job !, well explained. I new I wasn't the only one trying this. One question, which system (attachment) did you use to secure the pannier to the rack ?, I saw the strap around the panniers but that's just extra security ! It's the rack tube 8mm ?...Great job !
@kayttajanimi
@kayttajanimi 9 лет назад
Thank you! I will have to take some pictures or even a video of that attachment system i made up. There is a strap around panniers because it was my first trip with them. There was a heavy load in them and i thought that extra strap would not harm anyone. I drove in pretty nasty roads or should i say trails. :) But after all,straps weren't needed,panniers stayed on the place with no problem. That pipe,i used,is 20mm with wall diameter of 2mm. I think it is some kind of hydraulic pipe for industrial purposes and machines.
@lucasauda
@lucasauda 9 лет назад
kayttajanimi Great job! I'm also curious to see the attachment system. And I wonder how much strong they are compared to aluminium ones, but I don't think you're gonna drop your bike to show us... :-D
@kayttajanimi
@kayttajanimi 9 лет назад
Hi,Thank you! Yeah,you are right,i will not drop my bike for a test. But basicly,when you drop the bike with alloy panniers you can hammer it back straight,not too many times but couple times... But how well will the lid fit back on,it´s a different thing. I made these panniers fairly thick,so i would say it could survive of dropping. And because of shape of these,insted of basic cubic shape,it should handle that stress caused by dropping fairly well. And if something cracks on these,it is repairable with glassfiber resin,or if needed i can add more layers of fibreglass. I will make a little video of attachment system i made earlier. I haven´t seen similar system earlier,it is simple,safe and strong. :)
