Time to spill my hot takes on how our generation has been talking about sustainability & fashion (with a side rant of youtuber culture and the temptation to appear more ethically perfect online than we are in real life).

This is a great discourse on this topic! One of the most interesting videos and well expressed view points I’ve seen in a long time! 💗 This is a very compassionate understanding of real human life.

It makes me think about the that idea that If everyone was imperfectly sustainable that would make such a bigger impact than if just a handful of people were perfectly sustainable

such an incredible video, as a small lifestyle & fashion youtube, i already relate to that fear of being crucified for any contradictions - and my platform isn't even large yet. 10/10!! love your channel btw

thoroughly enjoyed your thoughtful takes and completely agree. i'm a small youtuber as well and i almost feel like it's necessary to "brand" yourself according to strict moral values -- a small but loud proportion of our audiences demand and expect perfection, and to sort of protect ourselves from constant soul-squeezing criticism we can either hold ourselves to these impossibly high standards or simply "edit out" moments of weakness / accidental moral failings so our community is none the wiser. accountability on steroids, maybe? it's totally unnatural and can really mess with you in the head department! p.s. your anecdote about veganism was...relatable 😅

I think fast fashion consumption can be acceptable when you absolutely know you’re gonna wear the piece forever and ever.

I suppose it depends a lot on your financial status. I mean, I'm not poor, but I'm not rich either. I buy what I can afford, and that's the crux of the matter. And by "afford " I mean money and time. I thrift when I can (I don't have many thrift shops in my city) and buy even from fast fashion brands when I find something I need/want. The difference, I believe, is in how you maintain the products you buy, whether from fast fashion, vintage shops, or sustainable brands. I've been taught to care a lot for all of the things I buy. Yes, quality lately is down bad, but if you bought it, maintain it for as long as possible. And yes, it is possible. Maybe this is a greater part of the solution: maintenance of the products you buy. They last longer and you don't really need to shop more to replace them.

I think we should be more understanding and understand that people change their minds and are contradictory. And that's fine, because if a person wants to be more sustainable and carries out this project truly believing in it, we shouldn't judge her because she decided to get a top from Zara, because maybe she does it with a conscience, knowing that she will use that item until death and won't throw it away after 1 time. I believe that sustainability is being more mindful with our purchases

the thing about our culture of shame and perfect "ideals" is, that even objectively good things like veganism and slow fashion can be used as a weapon of sorts to make people (or oneself) feel bad and "not enough". i think you put it really well. maybe i wouldn't compare fast fashion influencers to slow fashion ones eye-to-eye, but I see where you're coming from.
