MY HUGE VINTAGE REEL COLLECTION! 

The bluegrass intro alone deserves a thumb up.

I've just got into vintage equipment (50s to early 70s) a few months ago and have already accumulated 27 reels with "matching" vintage rods (Garcia on Garcia, Shakespeare on Berkley, Penn on Fenwick, etc) and all in excellent to mint condition. I have each of Ultralight, Medium, and Light/Heavy Salt for most. The reels that have become my favorite and really surprised me are the DAM Quicks. I'll display all of them as long as the wall space holds out but my goal is to catch a fish with each one. I'm a senior citizen so this is my pre-retirement hobby. Your banjo-playing friend looks like every college guy I knew in the late 60s/early 70s - right out of the cast of The Paper Chase. Renaissance man.

You guys need to try more Daiwa reels, I don't see any in that collection. The Daiwa's of the 70's, the Silver through Black Gold series are amazing. They've got speed, smoothness, and drags that are nearly in the same league as modern reels, while still maintaining the rugged build and mechanical simplicity.

The Vintage Mitchell 498’s are MADE TO LAST!!! A very rare reel that is great for surf fishing. I would kill to have one!

My 1st reel was a 50's model Mitchell 300. I'm now 70 . Glad to find ya'll here. Also, I am a HUGE Bluegrass lover, I've Met Bill Monroe, Doc & Merle Watson, Sam Bush, Ralph Stanley, and many more of the Legends!

I have a 1960s Garcia Mitchell saltwater reel in great condition made in France

Estate sales are a good source for these. You can get them on the cheap and a lot of times they are in Primo shape. Love that you are preserving the past! Keep it up ya'll. Tight Lines from Texas!

I just started servicing an buying the Mitchell 300s as I used as a kid in the 70s. My father also has me hooked ( no pun intended) on the Luxor reels (absolutely love them). They both bring back great memories and the are simple, well built, serviceable and functional. I’m starting to get back into fishing and using my dads reel as and bamboo rods. I keep getting caught by my wife receiving packages every other day, but she knows I enjoy fishing and vintage woodworking. Great video and I like and appreciate the talented banjo playing. I have 100s of vintage reels myself and I use them all the time I have harty reels Mitchell reels old dam quick and old shimano reels Barkley reels and many more and I love them.

I also collect vintage reels and I have many Mitchell's including a blue 497

First favorite reels were spinning reels, Orvis 50a and Orvis 100ss. I still have and use those. Have also liked and have numerous DamQuick spinning reels. They collect too much dust.

I have a collection of around 50 vintage surf spinning reels that I restored and use. As for Mitchell’s you need a 488 and 498, - the really large saltwater reels. It looks like you have a Penn “Greenie.” That’s a great reel. I have 4 “Greenies - all the styles of the 700 and 704. The Penn 704Z and 706Z are fantastic reels that if in mint condition are worth over $200.oo. P I have an Airex Mastereel Saltwater No. 1 sspinning reel that uses a lever drag. Check out Luxor reels and the West German DAM Quick reels ?The DAM Quick 270 Super made around 1952 is a fantastic surf reel and are often very expensive especially the 2-speed model. Best source for vintage reels are EBay and auction/selling sites like Mercari. The clicking sound can usually be turned off by switching off the anti-reverse.

I own a few old Shakespeare, Southbend, and Pflueger baitcasters. Some are from the 50s and 60s but my favorite is a Shakespeare Bicentennial 1975 baitcaster given to me from my sister.

Here in Brazil we still manufacturing the same model os fishing reel since 1962, the brand name is Paoli, and i buy mine today. They have 4 models os fishing reel: the paoli super , paoli rio, paoli malcoln and the paoli malcoln rio.

my grandmother gave me a very old pole reel combo, has a metal rod and rope line, i dont use it but it still works

Daiwa still sells the ss tournament whisker and in the smaller sizes the combination of the worm drive and the amazing drag (smooth and strong) more than makes up for the lack of instant anti reverse and the slight weight disadvantage. The ss700 is a great reel for 2-4# mono mountain trout stream fishing. Also the cardinal 3 reels from the early zebcos through the early Abus are pretty awesome ultralights and have a pretty unique drag set up, probably the best "rear drag" type set up ever. They were originally made in Sweden and then moved to Japan - the metal body models are bulletproof and even some of the early graphite models are pretty decent - aside from the plastic spools (that always suck)

I remember using a bail-less reel when I was a kid. It was pretty high-tech in its day.

I have had a couple of these old mitchels unfortunately I no longer have any of them. been kind of leaning towards starting again.

Mitchell reels were very popular in the UK from the 1950's to the mid 80's, the 300's were the dogs fresh water specimen fishing reel for pike, carp, etc and the Mitchell match with the automatic bail was the most popular for competition fresh water fishing with only 3lb test mono on it, I have somewhere a very old Mitchell if I find it I will send it to you! 👍🎣😁

you can learn about the reel speed by looking up the retrieve ratio 2 to 1 ...3 to 1 ...5 to1 ... and so on.

No DAM Quick reels? Incomplete collection! : ) Unbelievable reels, from the 1960'S / 1970's.

Quick Reels by DAM {Germany} are tougher than Mitchells in spinning reels but my favorite spinning reels were made by Cardinal from Sweden because they were lighter and had a helical drive system that was much better than the planetary gear system used by Mitchell.

I have an ocean city 808 had to put masonry twine on it to get it to cast properly because it so old it has no bearings

I remember and grew up when Michell's were the pinnacle of reel design..:) I really enjoy the view into the past...I have a couple of Mitchell's and Shimano's as well (from the 1980's) I'm Interested in those die cast reels that transitioned from the 1980's until the modern designs late 1980's into the 1990's. Diawa's and Shimano's really built good stuff in that era...have a few of those as well. Of course the reel I grew up with....shoveling driveways and raking leaves defining the budget were the Japanese build Berkely's..:)

I love good banjo playing. I'm a big Steve Martin fan. A band you may really like is 'The Hillbilly Goats'. I know those folks and they play some mean Bluegrass and old-time blues. Well worth checking out.

Very cool. I have a vintage reel fetish as well. Mostly 70's and 80's but hands down my 2 favs are Penn Jigmaster 500 and Penn Levelmatic 940. Bought my 10 year old son a Garcia Mitchell 622, he loves it. Love to join your club but I don't do Facebook.

I just picked up a Vintage Berkley Reel. Are they good? It is old but feels like it's built to last. It's a Ball Bearing.

A brief comment about vintage fishing reels. We NOW live in a time where modern fishing reels are among the most advanced marvels of fishing tools EVER Used. Don't get me wrong, I've collected and owned about as many vintage reels that you have on that table. Back when I collected them there was no eBay, Amazon or even computer websites where I could buy them. I used to run the whole gambit of fishing shows or flea markets during the off season just to buy old reels. And sometimes bought them from old timers that I ran into at the beach who were willing to part with their old vintage reels. You know why they parted so easily with some of their reels? Because they've learned something that you guys collecting those old reels will soon realize. The first time you're hooked into possibly the fish of a lifetime and something FAILS you and you loose that fish you might come to your senses. Reels today are made of some of the most advanced materials ever. Like aircraft grade aluminum on the Van Staal VR 150, carbon fiber and zion composite used in some of the new Daiwa reels. These advances allow reels today to weight 15 ounces while putting out close to 40 pounds of drag! without a blip. Vintage reels are curiosities of a by gone era they look great on a table or shelf and that's where they should stay.

I was wondering if you have one of the large French Luxor surf fishing reels? I recently got one as well as a very rare Mer 52 PUM large surf spinning reel also made in France. Both of these reels are probably the finest high quality saltwater spinning reels I have ever seen. The design and materials are so much better than modern reels that they truly cannot be compared to most of today’s inferior reels. I have over 80 vintage surf spinning reels. They are all I use. They range in age from the 1940s to the early 1980s. To me, only the higher end reels of today can even begin to compare. I really appreciate your willingness to collect and share these magnificent little machines. I think this is the fourth time I’ve watched this video, I’m sorry but I refuse to use FaceBook ever again.

A real reel collection

I know this is an older video but anyone got a website or something where I would find the specs on older reels I was gifted a centaure caribe and I’m giving it a refreshment anyone know what line I should put and what rod i should match it with.

Firstly, good music, but the strumming ukulele needs work: try to just strum chords on beats 2 and 4; that is the traditional bluegrass mandolin accompaniment for a reel as played in the intro. On beats 1 and 3, the strings are muted but strummed anyway to make that percussive ‘chuck’ sound. Maybe you haven’t learned about the DAM Quick 5001 spinning reel, long out of production. Check those bad boys out. Designed for landing 200 kilo tuna with twin drag. With carbontex washers nowadays, they can be upgraded to even better performance for way less than $700 for the Van Staals or Stellas (if you can find one) .

All them reels and only one DAM quick 🤔 you can keep them Mitchel's they turn into coffee grinders after heavy use. The best vintage reels are the DAM quick and Shakespeare 2052 and 2062 check out my RU-vid ch bigdmc1 where I modify them so they are still useful
