Looks great! Regarding your question for bass drum heads, you may like to check out the EQ3 Frosted. I have a 24x18 Pearl Reference kick, which is picky about heads, and the EQ3 Frosted is working nicely (as does my Emad). The frosted EQ3 is nice as it balances a natural sounding attack with great body. Definitely worth checking out.

Awesome studio tour man! Your videos helped me a lot since I started multichannel recording my drums this Jan. Nice setup! I'm just doing drum recordings (10 mics) with a Scarlett 18i20 and an OctoPre and the sound got so much better than with the mixer before. So a much more basic setup.... Yours is really nice🤘🤘🤘Keep up the great work

Nice setup! For the kick drum I've always liked Remo Powerstroke 3 with Remo Falam Slam Patch and Pearl Demon Drive wooden (red) beaters. It always sounds perfect. Evans heads give a bit of plasticky sound to the attack from my experience but I've not used them for a long time now

I think you're a good example on how it is so much more important to know HOW to use the gear vs what gear you actually own. While I imagine you've spent more than just a pretty penny on everything over the years, you took the time to understand what works where. Super inspiring video! I work exclusively in the box and would love to have a big enough space one day to be able to put in some more gear and maybe even a drum set. For now GGD and Neural are my best pals though hahaha
@spinlightstudios
@spinlightstudios 5 месяцев назад
Thanks man, I’ve definitely spent a fair chunk on investing in the studio over the years and a lot of gear that I thought I needed, didn’t end up making the cut when deciding what pieces I used regularly. I think we tend to WANT a lot of gear and justify it by the fact it will make us better at what we do… it gets a point though where it’s just GAS lol GGD and Neural help make it possible to make massive tunes without having to be massively loud while making them.
@komobabo
@komobabo 5 месяцев назад
@@spinlightstudios 100% I do have a space I can run amps and things like that (although a drum set might be too much lol) but the versatility and how amazing they sound it will be my go-to most times. And in the context of a good mix, I don’t perceive it making the biggest difference in the world.
@naggelwauss

@spinlightstudios

Hmm I’d say the outboard gear is just some icing on the cake, the quality came before that, it’s just nice to have a some outboard gear if you get really serious about working in audio! It definitely gives my mixes a nice touch, but i also think you can get fantastic mixes just in the box too

Nice. All you need and more. I've always thought that one of the problems with DAWs is that you start with way too many building blocks in the toybox. Learning how to make great recordings by experimenting with minimal equipment is the quickest way to learn how to make great choices. It's why we marvel at engineers who get killer sounds while appearing to do virtually nothing.
@spinlightstudios
@spinlightstudios 5 месяцев назад
Very true, it’s good to learn how to use the things you have and get the very best out of them! It’s not always about having more gear - usually there comes a point where more things just slow you down

Such a cool set up, would be a dream to have that space. You call it Humble but i would call it comprehensive, really is all the anyone would ever need for 90% music these days. with the kits and amps etc, Is noise for neighbours or other around you an issue?

@spinlightstudios 5 месяцев назад
Thanks, I suppose I’m comparing to all of those crazy “home studios” that Andrew masters has done tour videos of, some of those are just insane haha haven’t had any issues with the Neighbour’s :) I keep all of my louder recordings of drums and guitars amps to during the day time hours to avoid any possible issues. Has always worked well, never had any complaints!

Great tour. Everything you need and nothing you don't. I'm curious about something that I've never seen addressed: I'm running REAPER. I can dock/undock my mixing window from my tracking window. I have two 32" computer monitors side-by-side. I keep my tracking window on one monitor and my mixing window on the other. My nearfields sit on the outside - and have midfields outside of them. When I see other creators' set ups, they usually have one computer monitor and the nearfields are relatively close together. I'm wondering if I'm creating a problem for myself by having them too far apart - or - as long as I'm in a triangulated listening position I'm okay. Sorry if this is a dumb question (I'm a newb).
@spinlightstudios
@spinlightstudios 5 месяцев назад
Over the years I’ve culled away a lot of the things I thought I needed but rarely used. Everything I have and use now can covers all my needs! I still get GAS though 😂 The further apart your monitors are the wider the stereo image will appear. As long as the center image isn’t disappearing you should be okay. It took me a while to adjust to the extra width this desk added - I had my monitors closer together before I built it. But now I’m used to it!
@aarons6617
@aarons6617 5 месяцев назад
Form an equilateral triangle with your left and right monitor placement and your listening position at the apex to form the 3 points of the triangle -- then check to make sure you don't lose the center. You may have to sit farther back than you prefer if you keep them really wide, unless you're able to move the monitors back instead, but be mindful of your back wall too. For the most part, that should do it, but equidistant from each other and you/your sweet spot is key -- and try to keep the tweeters at ear height. Take care!

Nice stuff mate - cool space! Wondering what your thoughts are on those Great River pres? I’ve got some of the Phoenix pres and am looking for a different flavour… mainly for acoustic guitar/bass. I know they’re both in the neve vein, just wondering if you find them different enough, and what those characteristics are? Thanks!
@spinlightstudios
@spinlightstudios 5 месяцев назад
Thanks mate! My first proper preamp was a great river, it always sounds good to me! I generally do most of my vocal recordings with it. It’s maybe a little cleaner than the phoenix. But they are both kinda similar. The great river is really quiet though, great for recording quiet sources - less self noise.
