15:24 The real advantage with the E-GMP platform is the *average* charging speed. The peak ~235 kW charging speed is largely irrelevant because the EV6 and Ioniq 5 can draw up to 170 kW from a 150 kW charger, and they will still be charging at 150 kW at 80% battery.
@ScubaSteveCanada
@ScubaSteveCanada 2 года назад
Yes, I was charging at an Electrify Canada 150kW station and achieved the 170 KW rate. Mind you I was the only vehicle using the entire facility (no sharing). I don't need to use the 350KW station (which costs more).
@newscoulomb3705

In my opinion, most EV people aren't thinking correctly about charging. Charging speed doesn't matter; only charging time matters. And the reason charging time matters is how it aligns to your expectations for the trip (opportunity cost). Having the option for a significant 10 to 15 minute charging session, even starting at >50% battery is important for road tripping because you can add an hour or more of driving range while taking a bio break. Outside of that, if you can add two hours or more of driving range while eating a meal (typically 30 to 45 minutes) you've still achieved that positive opportunity cost. The only concern for EV road trips is if the range and charging time add unwanted time to the trip (negative opportunity cost). Ultimately, it comes down to how you as an individual travel, and most online EV influencers seem to be suffering from group think (possibly from relying too heavily on Tesla's route planner over the years, which encourages deep cycles and short charge stops). As a result, they are trying to insist that quick pitstops are the only way to travel in an EV, when in actuality, many people don't travel that way, even in ICE cars. Going from my Chevy Volt to my Chevy Bolt EV in 2016, I literally only added 30 to 45 minutes to my typical travel time over 500+ miles. Why? While I could make the trip with a single, 10-minute fueling stop in the Volt, I was still stopping twice to use the bathroom and once for a meal (it's 8+ hours of driving, after all). Almost every modern EV can now make that trip in a similar time as I used to spend in my gas-powered Volt thanks to more, faster, and better-distributed chargers.

Speed by its very definition is correlated with time. In other words, speed is literally how long it takes to do something. I know the point you are trying to make but your use of terminology is confusing.

I've been driving electric for over two years with a few long multiday trips in both the Audi etron and Taycn RWD. I seem to stop at the same stops with both cars and the travel time per day is almost the same. We are seniors and appreciate the extra stops when traveling in an EV and as such the amount of time at a charging stop is predicated largely by bio requirments. We plan our trips on ABRP and find the destination arrival times to be an hour more than plan for a full days driving. So I can see where if in a hurry a faster charging vehicle would be an advantage but generally speaking there is a point where faster charging for many might not reduce their time on the road if driving all day. Finally, what will help is having DCFCs at evey exit of main freeways so cars with more range can stop less frequently.
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 2 года назад
@@makingtechsense126 How is it confusing? Speed and time are related, but they are not the same. In terms of EV charging, speed is measured in kW, and that speed is relative to the battery size. An impressive kW for one battery might be lackluster for another. Back in 2014, you could get a Tesla Model S with an 85 kWh battery. Charging on the public chargers at 50 kW charging speed took nearly an hour and a half of time to charge to 80%. However, on a Chevy Spark EV with a 20 kWh battery, that same 50 kW charging speed would charge to 80% in 20 minutes of time.

Good video. I've been logging all of my charging in my SE and comparing to what I could have paid to travel the same distances in various ICE classes of cars. So, I have a similar spreadsheet although I haven't yet taken a road trip where I had to charge along the way - which will change this weekend. I made my first visit to the Richmond, VA EA station an hour after watching Dave visit the station on his trip down to Florida. Thanks to both Dave and Kyle for all the I5 videos. They really helped get me comfortable with making the leap to electric and I've been having a great time in the month that I've had the car.

Yah, the cruise control in the ID.4 has a few deficiencies. On my ID.4, I find that the cruise control tries to maintain the speed a bit too precisely. So dips in the road or wind gusts can throw it off and actually cause it to put the car in light regen when it should have just coasted the car instead. However, it also depends on the driving mode selected. In Eco mode, the ACC reacts slowly and doesn't jerk the car into regen immediately, whereas in Sport mode the ACC reacts very quickly and can jerk the car around unnecessarily (accelerating or decelerating). The main solution is to use Custom mode and set the ACC responsiveness to be as light as possible, but this creates a second problem in that it does not react quickly enough to slowing traffic ahead of the car. (This is with the 2.3 firmware that came with my AWD ID.4). I hear that 3.x fixes some of these issues but I don't know for sure. The one-pedal stuff... I just don't like it. It makes it difficult to defensively hover the brake because just letting off the accelerator significantly decelerates the car when I don't want to decelerate the car. Plus in B mode I have to keep my foot precisely in position on the accelerator at all times and that is really annoying. But I understand that a lot of people do like the one-pedal stuff. I far prefer D mode, and D mode will do light regen (fairly smartly too)... a tad less in eco/comfort mode, and a tad more in sport mode. But not so much that it upsets people behind you. -Matt

Pro Tip: kWh charged / time in seconds * 3600 is the actual average charge speed for the session. The "OOS session efficiency factor" is actually the other way round: charging time in seconds divided by kWh, which is a bit hard to understand, but in the end also a valid metric (how many seconds per kWh).
@Peter_AG

I agree. for example the best "efficiency factor" of 20 equates to an average power of 180 Watts, the higher effic factors indicate lower average power - much easier to comprehend.

I really hope Hyundai/Kia can gradually improve the efficiency of these E-GMP cars. Charging is absolutely sorted. A bit of optimization of thermals or any software tweaks they can make will really improve what is already a very solid platform. As EA expands, road trips get even better with these cars so they can match Teslas in the real world. Real world meaning humans who need toilets and food and drink on trips.

Wow that's a great spec for the charging. I don't know how it all works for speed. I just took a trip. With my 2021 Bolt Premier from Jacksonville to Atlanta. 386 miles one way. It was my daughter and I. She had some tickets for a concert. We made the trip with another party that started in St. Augustine. Which is 35 miles south of us. We met at one of the few EA in the area. They have the Ioniq 5 SE. Really good looking car. Road trips are better with others. We both set up the trip in ABRP. My friends said 6.25 hours trip time with a 40 minute charge. Mine being a very slow charging car. Said 7.5 hours for the trip. Long story short version. I set up 4 - 20 minute stops. They had just 2 of 15 minutes. Since they were the first road trip. They decided to go and stop with us. So they over charged but it was free for them. I had to pay. It was a very good fun trip. As we would get off the charging and sometimes with lunch and shopping. It took more than the 20 minutes we scheduled. But it was still a great fun trip. My Bolt averaged 3.7 miles per kWh. Her was 2.6. we drove at 70 mostly. When travelling with time it's not really much of an issue. Between the two. But if you need to go fast and get there early then the Ioniq 5 is best. I just can't afford the 15k difference in price.

just a quick comment as i have not watched the full video yet, on your Tesla road trip comment. i stopped at the EA station out in Wrentham, MA to charge on my way back from Cape Cod on sunday. saw 3, yes 3 Teslas pull in and try to use the EA station, and fail. so there are many (most likely new) tesla owners that are still learning. this was in 28 minutes time. i so wish i could have talked to them to see what the story was, but i was on an important call. i know one tried to plug in, saw that it didn't fit, and drove off.

I was at EA in Cedar City, UT a couple of weeks ago, and Teslas were showing up there to try to charge. Apparently their software had sent them to the Cedar City Supercharger, which was totally shut down for repair/upgrading. The woman I talked to was frantic as she only had 10 miles of range left, no place to plug in her level 2 charger, and no Chademo adapter. I suggested that she call a tow truck and have it take her to the nearest Supercharger.

Hi Dave, Power is the kilowatts. Power is volts * amps. For example 400 V * 100 A is 40,000; but 800 V * 100p A is 80,000. One benefit of higher voltage is lower heat dissipation in the wires.

Dave, like you, we live in one place (Mississippi) and our kids and Grandkids are east and west coasts. So road trips will a multi-time-a-year event. I'm really looking toward the Ioniq 5 as a replacement for my Pathfinder. I don't need the size anymore but the wife would rather sit high when driving. Of course, I live in an area where I will have to travel hundreds of miles to buy one. And convince the wife.
@DB-cc5vg
@DB-cc5vg 2 года назад
Range and charging rate are both important factors. In my area, an 80% range closer to 300 miles would be preferable. Fast charging is not available as often as I would prefer. Charging right beside the highway is preferable to a detour in to a town or city to reach your charger. The big benefit to the Ioniq5 in this case is the shorter charging time. Approximately 2/3 of the time to charge vs the ID4. Two hours on the road at the speed limit instead of stopped to charge is huge. To really see the difference it would have been great had you used a GPS with detailed trip screens to record average speed while moving and average speed calculated with elapsed time (including stops for lights, signs, traffic, road construction, charging etc). At destination vs 2 hrs+ driving time still to go, it's a no brainer. Adding moving average speed and elapsed time average speed data to your spreadsheet would be very educational and an eye opener for a lot of people. Even an 18' charging stop likely entails at least 5' of off ramp, service road, getting parked and then actually getting plugged in and charging, perhaps a bit quicker to unplug, get moving and on the road again. This could represent a significant portion of the charging stop time. Percentage wise it will be less for the car at the slower charging speed but it still adds time to the stop and results in lower average speeds.

Your session efficiency factor tells how many seconds it takes to charge one kWh (the unit will be s/kWh). Maybe a more familiar way to express how efficient a charging session was would be to say what average kW you got out of the charger? That would be Total energy delivered (kWh) divided by the time in hours (so Total energy delivered times 3600 divided by Time in seconds). The most efficient IONIC 5 session averaged 175kW while the most efficient ID 4 session averaged 107kW.

David, thanks for the video. Here’s my situation, I live in GA about 42-miles from the office which has 32-free Type 2 chargers, we currently hyper-work with Mon & Fri in the office and Tues, Weds, Thurs from home and I’m retiring in 10 months. I live in an older townhome without a garage and no assigned parking spaces. The space I have been parking in without exception so far is directly in front of my home about 12-15 feet from my covered front porch and outlet, so installing a type 2 charger is currently not an option, although I’m working on the board to approve the install of the charger on my patio. I live within 10-miles of many EA charging stations and 8-miles from a Tesla Super charging station. We are currently looking at properties in Florida so my wife and I will be making 4-6 trips back and forth a year. After watching all of Kyle’s videos on all of his channels for the last 3 or 4 months I’m considering 5 different cars the Iconic 5 , EV6 , ID4 , Mini SE and a Tesla Y. Any recommendations? IMHO; Any of those cars will be fine for you. My only concern would be the limited range of the MINI Electric. 100 miles? Try 60-75 in winter. That’s personally not enough for me. But it is a cute little ride! Tesla is the easiest to own, charge, super chargers everywhere etc. if you want to just dip your toes in with the least amount of anxiety and stress? Go Tesla. But keep in mind they are not inexpensive, and you don’t get a $7,500 federal tax credit on them. Plus no free charging. The VW and The IONIQ 5 come with free 30 minute charging sessions for 2 years I believe which is an awesome value to not overlook; especially with gas prices where they are today!

I really would like the ioniq 5’s faster charging for long trips next summer, but with an MSRP of under $46k for the Pro S RWD and not having to chase down a dealer that will stick to msrp, I feel like for my situation, the id4 is a better choice. Yeah, it’s a bit of “how long does it take to fill the fuel tank on an F250 vs a Silverado” Unfortunately it also depends heavily on how much charge you started with - the first and last 10% or so can be super slow. Once you hit “fast enough” it becomes irrelevant. However, until 150+ charging is ubiquitous, it’s going to be 15+ minutes for most cars - so it does make some different.

Maybe take it from 5% to 100% on each. I plan on buying an EV, but I thought it would be cheaper to charge on road trips. I see that it cost $170 to go around 1300 miles (I guessed the miles, and could have deducted the final charge). From my calculations, if I drove my hybrid, I could go that distance for $153 if gas were $4.50 a gallon (estimating 38 mpg when I can get above 40). It would be $237 if gas were $7 a gallon). My wait time would be how long it took to fill a 14 gallon tank a few times. I might stick with the hybrid option for trips and use the EV in town. Out of curiosity, how much does it cost to charge (average) per month for local driving using a home Level 2 charger?

I love my Kia EV6 Light. It has the 58 kWh small battery. Charges similarly quickly as the bigger battery Ioniq 5 and EV6’s but just has a little bit less range. In the real world it means stopping every 120-150 miles, so a break every 2 hours which is actually really comfortable for the humans in the car. I’ve taken it on several road trips and for the most part it charges at 100-170 kW which is 2S to 3S. We stop at 70-90% SOC unless we really need to go 200 miles to get to the next DCFC (for instance going across West Virginia on I-77/I-64 where there is zero CCS public charging).

I agree with everything you say about the id4. Unfortunately I can't afford to just get rid of it and jump into the ionic. I too make the trip from the north to Florida and the time it adds to charge the id4 forces me into a hotel so there goes the free charging. If there were more chargers in more convenient places and if the mileage were greater then I would be ok with the i.d.. Now we have to increase range because as elrctric vehicles become more and more common we will have to wait to charge because unlike gas stations a EA charging station only has 4 to 6 chargers in most places. Bad enough to sit and hour charging but add to that waiting to charge like People in California at some Tesla charging stations that have 20 or so chargers. The only way to have enough chargers is to upgrade to 800 volt and more miles per charge. Otherwise EV adoption will come to a quick halt. As to the id4 features such as the cruise or ten second drivers assist. They suck. It's that simple. They shut off our don't work. Can't tell you how many times I almost got someone because the icc cruise didn't work . Great video

Hey Dave another awesome video mate thanks! I think the ID.4 as you said has the edge in highway efficiency, and hey 125 kW ain’t bad. But if we think about it this way: the ID.4 base vs Ioniq 5 SE, there is almost a $5,000 price delta between the two. And with the ID.4 you get 3 years of free charging. Plus a heated steering wheel in the ID.4. I’m truly torn here I have a base i5 RWD coming into Mirak mid-June but with taxes, fees and freight it’s almost a 50k car. Of course it’s really 40k after rebates. But 35k (ID.4) really just sounds better to me. It’s such a difficult choice on which one to choose. Ugh.

Good problem to have. Just use your brain, your gut, your heart and your wallet. Pour it all into a blender and turn it on to HIGH for a few weeks. Pour and serve. The answer will be in the glass somewhere

Any concerns with the long term quality of Hyundai? You had a video around the 12-volt battery drain issue. Also how dirty (rain/snow) does the rear-window get?
@dconner9
@dconner9 2 года назад
Not concerned about the long term quality of this car. Although who really knows? I did indeed have the 12V battery die on me. However, the problem has not returned and I keep the Veepeak adapter plugged in all the time now. I recently had the recall software update performed by my dealer, and since then, the amber 12V charging indicator light has been on much more often than before telling me anecdotally that Hyundai addressed the issue. No factual evidence to back this assumption up other than not having the situation recur. The rear window getting dirty issue happens sure. But no more than any other car I have owned that I notice. I am sure others will point out that it’s much worse than others but to me this is a non issue. So the car doesn’t have a rear wiper…. True. To me no biggie

What do you mean when you say it doesn’t have “plug-in” charge? Is that a reference to home charging options, or does it refer to how the chargers talk to your car and bill you?
@dconner9
@dconner9 2 года назад
“Plug and Charge” is what I was trying to say. This just means you plug in to a DC fast charger (like EA) and the network/machine you are connected to knows your car, knows your credit card and just bills you directly without having to swipe a credit card or use an app to approve and invoke a session. Hope this helps

I would agree that the Ioniq 5 would be the better choice at this point, of a vehicle of its size & of course other than a Tesla. As far a charging it will simply take time to educate the masses. It is early in this type of vehicle.

You could keep your order for the Tesla and also do an order for the Ionic 5. See which one comes in first and then cancel the other order. I'm a Tesla fan though, so I'd want the Tesla no matter what.

Personally, 50 miles covers me for the day and I charge at night. This is why I have a Clarity PHEV. But for a road trip… well… personally I’d rather fly if it’s over 500 miles (1 charge / 1 fuel-up) because there aren’t enough fast chargers in my part of the country. But if you’re set on driving and have charging available, then I guess charge speed is all that matters.
@outofspecboating6985

A Lucid will do almost 500 miles, so range potential is there. My TDi does 800 per tank, so I am spoiled, but for local trips less than 200 miles daily or even weekly, a BEV can’t be beat. BEV do not do well at high speeds though, greater than 70 mph and range drops considerably. A hybrid, Clarity or diesel do much better for long range road trips.

@@outofspecboating6985The one downside to the Clarity PHEV is the tiny 7-gallon gas tank - it gets ~300 miles a tank if you’re running it as HV - still, that’s 4 hours of highway cruising so it’s just enough for a long stretch, without having too much gas sitting in the tank for months doing nothing normally

@@FuncleChuck I just got out of a 22 Venza hybrid rental and it was quite frankly a fantastic car. Small gas tank, but I averaged 45 mpg and I’m not shrinking violet when it comes to the go pedal. I was averaging almost 500 a tank in 110 degree weather with AC never turned off. It would idle for 10-15 minutes before engine kicked on , all the while AC on max blast. I had a Prius and the Venza blows it away in every aspect.

The problem with the Hyundai or the Kia is not the car, it's the fact that you can't order them like a Tesla or a ID4 from a dealer and get them for sticker, you have to wait for the dealer to get their allotment and then pay what they demand. So on paper they look like they only cost a few thousand more than an ID4, but in reality it's $10k - $20k more They may be a better car, but not $10 k better and certainly not $20k better

I'd love to get a BEV, but I road trip a lot and I just can't deal with stopping every 200 miles and charging for a half hour. I can drive from NY to Central Florida with just two gas stops in my ICE car. I'm going to wait until BEVs can get an honest 500 miles of range and can recharge in 15 minutes. That's probably going to be a long wait!
