2:00 This is a very good objection, and it's why a trial attorney saves the argumentation for the closing argument. Picard should have phrased that statement as a question: "As an expert in Mintaxian history, in your opinion, is it possible that your people achieved those reforms without help?" You can't object to expert testimony about the likelihood of something they're quite familiar with.

Borrowing U.S. litigation premises, (which is what the episode does,) the objection would then be "leading the witness." "Sustained." The correct syntax would be "forgive me, Jarrad, but... I am simply at a loss. We've explored the political, military and economic sectors, but I have failed to strike on a single active choice made by Dana to advance your civilization for the betterment of your people. I like the main message here. The message is simple - We have the power, through simple hard work, to change our world for the better. Those who advocate for powers outside of us to save the world cannot deliver, only those who debate, create long-standing reputable institutions, and work work work hard can save us, and I am thankful for that message. 'The Meek shall inherit the Earth' indeed.
@lukecox6317
@lukecox6317 6 месяцев назад
Of course many of those who created those institutions and philosophies did so because they believed in powers beyond our own who have an interest in us, being motivated by that belief and belief in the nature of the supreme supernatural, but your point does, at least in part, stand - it is our duty ourselves to seek for and strive to bring justice to those in need of justice, and mercy on those in need of mercy, and to seek understanding of the mechanisms and processes behind and at the core of the world, for in doing so we become Children of our Father.

It would have been a really great twist towards the end if Ardra actually was a Goddess/Devil. She would appear to Picard at the end and explain she scared the ancient Ventaxians in to cleaning up their world. She then returned 1000 years later and put on this charade in the hopes they would see through it and abandon superstition and not be so willing to believe of con artists and trickery. Though she would be disappointed the Ventaxians didn't figure this out for themselves, though with Picard's help the message was delivered effectively enough.

Pretty sure the federation made a treaty with like everyone else they wouldn’t attempt to create cloaking technology as to not trigger an arms race in the galaxy. Kinda like “As long as I have this leg up on you I feel safe, but if you attempt to rise to my level I will attack” sort of deal.
@TheDa6781
@TheDa6781 2 года назад
@@adiryitzhak9633 I'm not sure that is the way to achieve a balance of powers. The US has about the same number of nukes as Russia. If Iran had the same military and nuclear potential as Israel, neither side would even think of nuking the other. Smaller skirmishes, and proxy conflict, maybe but nothing major. India and Pakistan, also about the same potential, etc. If the federation had a cloaking device, but refrained from drastically increasing it's military potential I see no reason for an arms race.

I love Star Trek, so please do not misunderstand me. But let's say that this woman IS Ardra (hypothetically). Even though she was not physically present during the planet's changes over the centuries since the planet's contract was signed with her, she still needed to be more influential in assisting those changes. If the real Ardra is a spiritual being, she could have helped influence decisions that ended in beneficial outcomes. She could also have effected changes in attitudes since the people from the point of the contract onward were all, essentially, living in fear. I say this because, as much as I love and respect Gene Roddenberry, his worldview seems to frequently aim at undermining the existence of God. That's entirely his choice, but I find it a sad choice, for him and for Star Trek fandom.

The appearance that you are drawing a parallel between an alien devil and the Christian God is ... Interesting.
@ajmittendorf
@ajmittendorf 6 месяцев назад
Yes, but it's actually the episode that draws that connection. Ardra played the benevolent god for 1000 years (in theory), and now time is up. I see the episode as being one that tries to paint God as a villain, making him easier to talk other folks into dismissing him. @@prion42

A.I.'s would be perfect Judges. Absolutely no bias or ability to be influenced.

No bias, perhaps, but the potential to be influenced exists in A.I.'s as much as it does in humans. In some ways, even more so, as their runtimes and processes for judgment or analysis could be compromised.

Except for the biases coded into them by the humans that make them, or if they're capable of learning, the inputs that they receive from a world dominated by humans. We're already seeing the beginnings of this in chatbots that inevitably start posting about sex or politics, and facial recognition apps that simply don't recognize minorities because they're inevitably trained on the majority

The only drawback is that you would possibly get legally consistent, but practically unworkable results. As a lawyer, I find that AI would make for very strict, unyielding and quite sterile approaches to law. Sentencing would be straightforward and take no account of any human factors, which would cut against first time offenders.

@@markdunham9634 we might then return to the rule that to break a law, one must suffer the consequences, and as such adjust the penalty so that it is less adverse than not breaking the law when the situation warrants it. Else the law becomes an instrument to discriminate against those that are conditioned to uphold it, for they will miss opportunities following the law, while vilains exploit the leniencey of the system to get away with anything, for "the penalty would be too harsh to impose for such a trifle".

When I was younger, I really liked this show. Now that I am older, I can see clearly that the show was written by atheists. Did nothing create everything? No, that is a scientific impossibility. Therefore, there is a creator! Jesus is the answer. He is the ONLY way to the Father in Heaven. Believe in and OBEY the Lord Jesus Christ, repent of your sins, get baptized, receive the Holy Spirit and be saved!

@@TentaclePentacle Have you ever read the Bible? It is God's Word to us and tells us about creation and how we are to live our lives. As for authenticity, the hundreds of fulfilled prophecies make is self-validating. Why not Buddha? Because he was created by God and is now dead. Our Creator is alive and will always be alive. I hope and pray that you will consider what I'm saying and start seeking God. Start by visiting a local church...they can help you learn more. Be blessed!

Even a man of God can have an imagination and flights of fancy. In other words, you don't have to be an atheist to imagine a future like in Star Trek. Nor is it blasphemous to say so. Of course, Jesus Christ is the savior of this world. No argument. I love Him with all my heart and thank Him for His unbelievable sacrifice. But I have enjoyed far too much science fiction to simply dismiss it as the ramblings of atheists. For example, Isaac Asimov was an atheist but his writing was still thought-provoking and well constructed. I don't question a person's faith of lack thereof to qualify him as worthy of my attention. That's not my job. Have a good day. Be blessed.

@@mikeyh0 I think you missed my point. Episodes of TNG frequently declare that there is no God and are therefore indoctrinating many of their viewers through storytelling and special effects.
