My weirdest ad: when I moved back to Spain after living in the UK for 5 years at age 27, I kept getting and ad for death insurance that would ship 'my remains back to the UK' when I died... I guess the algorithm though I was a retired UK pensioner living my last days in Spain? Kinda creepy.

SO creepy. imagine anyone going on even a temporary vacation from UK to Spain getting HEY WHAT IF U DIE THERE ads.

My weirdest ad: I'm a book publisher and almost everyday I get ads on my personal computer for books I have edited - I'm pretty sure there is a data breach going on here. I do enjoy the irony that the company is work for is paying money for these ads to appear on the computer of someone who gets the books being advertised for free.

My experience is that I get served ads for whatever I just bought. This was especially hilarious when I had just bought a new bed and I started getting ads for the literal store I had bought the bed at. How many bedrooms do they think I have???
@ItsRadishTime

that hasn't happened to me in a long time with the amount of tracking blockers I'm running but i very much remember that well. "hi you just made a major, once in a decade purchase, would you like to do that again immediately?"

This was incredibly said/scripted - “become harder to advertise to” is a new mantra.

Instagram keeps serving me ads for some kind of dog arthritis treatment, and no amount of blocking the accounts or closing the app seems to get it to stop. I don't have a dog (yet), and seeing a bunch of posts about dogs being sad and in pain bums me out.

I have been getting ads on RU-vid from the same place for months. They are selling gravestones?? No idea why, I don't think I'm that old yet 😭 These ads won't stop showing up, no matter how often I report them as not relevant. Really weird and ineffective targeting

Ads I was kind of proud to get: when I was working on my PhD I got adds for the very very specific things that my lab needed for research (not generic lab stuff, but specifically the AFM tips that would work with our machine, but off-brand). Nothing else; just banners on every website for those things. It seemed like I was working while I was just reading the news XD

@@ItsRadishTime weeellllll… I’m from Poland and here it’s not that uncommon for younger priests (especially those who work with teenagers) to have their own profiles. And I don’t like it either, I feel like it should work similar to the case of psychologists who are encouraged to hide their previous internet activities… nonetheless priests have to be an ad target of sorts tho it still doesn’t make sense to show them to me, an agnostic raging lesbian 😅

The best ads for me are always music vids for artists I already like or are the precise genre of my other favourite music. The fact that any other brands think they're worth my time is ridiculous. I'm a Millenial in rural Canada who doesn't shop online, so NOTHING will cause me to sell out to whatever non-preferred-music stuff they're trying to sell me.

I have an irrational loathing for ads of any kind. Like, I feel like I must be insane because no one else seems bothered by living in an "ad-supported reality." They don't seem all that 'supportive,' do they?
@ItsRadishTime

other creators tell me all the time they take ads so that they don't have to ask their audience for money because that feels disrespectful and I'm like-but the ad reads don't feel disrespectful to you? idk there's gotta be a better way.

I got married kinda early on in my 20s and ended up getting lots of wedding ads a few years after I'd already gotten married when I was the more "appropriate" age range for weddings, so that was a little surreal...and I've definitely been getting so much !!!BABY!!!! targeting for the past few years with no seeming end in sight, even though that's definitely not the path I'm on.
@ItsRadishTime
@ItsRadishTime Месяц назад
your existing marriage seems like a pretty basic fact that all these apps that make their money on collecting and selling user data would know. I mean, I'm glad that they don't. but it kind of makes their whole promise feel pretty flimsy, doesn't it?

My mom showed me a FB ad for a puzzle company that was "going out of business." I looked them up and found a bunch of Reddit posts about that same company and that same sale from >2 years prior. Now I assume all of those online "going out of business" sales are just a twist on "create a sense of urgency" tactics

Great video, Taylor! Right now, I see a red-coloured advert for "Snapdragon - the power inside all your favourite devices" everywhere I look. Not sure if they are expecting an imminent purchase of a phone or laptop from me, but it's news to me if I'm planning to buy either of those
@ItsRadishTime

it's always interesting to find out what kinds of ads another person gets that are entirely different from yours. i don't know if I've ever been advertised a phone or a laptop on instagram ever. which is bananas considering I replaced both of mine last year.

When I used Spotify I would also get ads aimed at new mothers (I don't have or plan to have kids) - but they also clearly thought I smoked week because I kept getting PSAs about how it can be harmful to smoke week while pregnant. Thanks, I guess?

There was a while where I was getting constant sports betting app advertisements which I am definitely the wrong audience for (I think the laws relaxed in my state so they kind of flooded in). I'm a very casual sports fan and also well aware of how predatory/risky those gambling sites are, so like, Not Gonna Happen. I am also being target-demo'd for BABY but more by the various swipeable video algos than the ads I think.

this happened to me when ny made it legal. they were EVERYWHERE. on ig, in podcasts, on the subway. seemed like they were just trying to get everyone and anyone to lose their money, kind of like when crypto ads were all over. so predatory and awful.

youtube and Tumblr are the only social media i use so im not exposed to that many ads but if my ten minute Tumblr srolls are interupted by an ad (this doesnt always happen lol), its (and has been for several months now) for a Game of Thrones role play (maybe mobile..?) game, whose name i forgot,, which is really funny to me cause when i got my Tumblr acc 11 years ago i was REALLY into the books, major fangirl, however have unfollowed all the fanblogs that have restarted with House of Dragon cause I never saw nor care about it.. but the ad algorithm feels like a weird time capsule 😅

I've been getting "doctors won't tell you about this wild diet/medical procedure/cure all" ads, but one that made me double take when I first saw it was a dietary supplement from some health guru that he claimed was made from mixing together the ONE HUNDRED pills he takes DAILY. 100 PILLS PER DAY! WHAT!? Sir, are you ok?

RU-vid remains fairly convinced over the last two years that I have an interest in dating or purchasing a wife from a "country with traditional values". The country changes pretty frequently but the baseline ad remains the same. It's sort of amusing but the more extreme versions of them feel pretty repugnant honestly.

The weird ones for me are the Trump-supporting superpac ads of terrible quality (like rough image quality) that always libel Harris and end with a still image of Trump’s face and a prerecorded “This message is backed by Donald Trump” line. They’re just so blatantly shallow.
