My Intersex Adventure (Self-Discovery Documentary) | Real Stories

Gen X filmmaker Phoebe Hart always knew she was different growing up - but she didn’t know why. This award-winning documentary traces Phoebe’s voyage of self-discovery as an intersex person, a group of conditions formerly termed hermaphroditism. Learning only in her teens that she was born with 46XY (male) chromosomes, Hart now seeks to understand her own story and the stories of others affected by this complex and often shameful syndrome.
With help from sister Bonnie (born with the same condition) and support from partner James, Hart drives across Australia, interviewing individuals whose struggles and victories mirror and differ from her own. Some advocate systemic change ending shame and controversial genital surgeries, while others debate coming out or staying closeted with a stigmatized secret. Questioning rigidly defined constructs of gender, sexuality, and normality, often with lively good humor, ORCHIDS is the first film to look at intersex from a positive perspective. Its engaging portrait of survival, courage and reconciliation will speak to a variety of audiences and spark lively discussion about what it means to be perceived as "different."

The fact that her and her sister went through the same thing but were shamed into telling no one, not even each other, about it is so incredibly sad.

I am old now (80's) but when I was a youngster (11-12) I heard the word hermaphrodite and looked it up. No web site then, just an encyclopedia. It was only described as a physical condition of the genitals the happened rarely to people. I never occurred to me that these were real people trying to live their lives, and that it was somehow shameful. How devastating that must have been. Thank you all who have the courage to claim it and explain it and help us understand what you have been through.

This is such a beautiful documentary. I wish it was mandatory for everyone to watch it. The world is a wild, weird, exciting and sometimes cruel place. What we don’t know about the human body and brain is vast. People should stop thinking about what is perceived as “normal” and that nothing is “normal”. Please be kind to everyone and consider that you don’t know what is going on in other people’s lives and be accepting of things you may not understand. ❤

Hermaphrodites are a biological condition that you don't see any discussion about. Some babies go through surgery by medical choice at birth. It is a very delicate situation that should be addressed with care and never mixed with any ideology.

It's too bad we just have to classify someone according to their genitals. Gosh we're all human beings with innumerable variations in our bodies, not just the genitals. Bothers me people are pidgeon holed. Why? Or if classification is needed for proper identification so be it. Every type and variation is somewhere in the continuam of the human body. Guess it is just asking too much to consider everyone a "normal" human being.

Omgoodness 17:08 😢 I know those were different times when she was born, but to sew up her vagina and remove her cervix, and give her male hormones?! That’s awful! They should’ve just waited until she presented as such and asked her how she felt. Could’ve saved a lot of heartache and pain I’m sure.

I am so very proud of you and sister for being able to do this documentary. It takes so very much courage to put this whole life you two have lived, basically, on display. The end result is that you are learning so much from the folks you have met along the way that are exactly like you. This condition is something that SHOULD NEVER be kept secret, nor should any type of surgery EVER BE DONE to a child prior to the age of consent for that child. My sister and I were discussing this very condition just 2 days ago and the fact that doctors and parents took it upon themselves to do the surgery. You women are extremely beautiful and courageous. To see you and James become parents truly warms my heart. God bless you all and I am also very proud of your mom for revealing the truth. I just can't imagine the torment she has gone through all these years by keeping silent. Lots of love and prayers from Virginia, USA.

Thanks for sharing such a personal and important story. To be very honest, you both present as female and there isn’t any indication of having male characteristics at all. I’m saying this because in some of the other people with the same circumstances, it is very obvious that they are male who identify as female, etc. I don’t mean that disrespectful, I am just making an observation. The other thing that you explained about not being able to receive male hormones just scientifically solidifies your female dominance. It seems that you both have had time to reflect on your sexual preferences and this topic is not about sexual preference but a medical condition. When Bonnie described how she mastered in lying and living in a fantasy world, I started laughing because I can relate so much! So please don’t beat yourself up thinking one thing has to do with the other. I see older individuals who have a version of this syndrome and they are obviously devastated because they were not allowed to choose and their parents and doctors made that decision for them. I know it’s easy to be an outsider hearing your story and make comments but please don’t let a medical condition define who you become and are currently and in the future. You are who you are and there is nothing “freakish” about either one of you. Please remember that you have a loving family who didn’t beat you or abuse you in any manner. I wish you both a life full of love and peace. ❤

Working in Healthcare most of my life, I've seen people born with extra limps, fingers/toes, and even a third Breast. These people can't help being born with both sexual organs, which is a deformity, unlike these people who aren't born that way. Why Parents decide for their children or let kids choose themselves at an immature age ticks me off! Hermaphrodites grow up and they either feel Male or Female and thats for them to tell, not for someone to choose for them. They could have ended up another David Reimer. God bless his Soul. 🙏🏽✝️

My beautiful boyfriend was born with this condition as well and he’s been suffering with the mistake of being a “female”, in my eyes he’s a handsome guy and I do understand the frustration intersex people experience a lot and the confusion that it leads to suffering but I can say that intersex people are truly amazing and unique by saying this I don’t mean that you guys have to cope with it or accepted it but don’t live with hatred I know family members like parents will have the ignorant mindset to not accept or tell the truth after years. I hope all intersex people don’t feel like they are a “cursed” or “aliens”, we are all human beings and deserved to be heard and accepted. Love you all 👍🥰
