Love your list. Some of my favorites are on there. But I want to recommend a non-fiction book that I actually have seen you mention before. It is Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Mayhem in Northern Ireland, by Patrick Radden Keefe, about the interior workings of the Provisional IRA and its leaders during the Troubles. Fascinating look at an unforgettable time in the modern history of Ireland.

Meave Binchy is great for getting out of a slump or as a pallet cleanser. Not sure about the one you picked up though, but my favourite is Circle of Friends, which was the first one I read and I thought it brilliant, whereas everything else I have read of hers was just ok. I read Angela's Ashes decades ago and loved it; I also read the follow up but didn't enjoy it as much. However, I recently found out that this is a trilogy (A'sA, 'tis, and Teacher Man) and picked up cheap second hand copies of each to read it as a whole. I have a short story collection from Edna O'Brien which I picked up second purely because my mom's name is also Edna 😅. Since picking it up, I keep on hearing about her, so clearly I was meant to read her. Can't wait to hear the wrap up of your selection! Happy reading and safe travels x

I have a pile of possibilities & a round-to-it sometime, list but no TBR. I read Angela's Ashes and McCourt's follow on books - they are on the stack to donate - never had a thought to reread them. Before I went to Scotland I deviated from my normal reading and binged a large number of highland romances - and I watched Monarch of the Glen. We actually drove by the castle from that series on a drive through the country and were almost past before we realized.

Make sure you bring raincoats, the weather's always miserable here in March and umbrellas won't last two seconds 😂 if you can find any of roddy doyle's kids books they're really lovely, and the uncensored version of dorian gray that's up on everand is probably my favourite audio version.

I'm not a fan of Joyce, but I am a huge fan of his novella/short story, The Dead. It's just 100 pages, and it's one of the best things I've *ever* read. Here's the description on goodreads: "Often cited as the best work of short fiction ever written, Joyce's story details a New Year's Eve gathering in Dublin that is so evocative and beautiful that it prompts the protagonist's wife to make a shocking revelation to her husband-closing the story with an emotionally powerful epiphany that is considered one of the best in modern literature." It's just stunning. 💚

Excited you are visiting Bonnie Scotland. Have you ever read SUNSET SONG by Lewis Grassic Gibbon written in 1932? It is a Scottish classic and is the first part of The Scots Quair Trilogy 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 My Irish recommendation is TROUBLES by J.G. Farrell written in 1970. It is the first part of The Empire Trilogy and won the Lost Man Booker Prize 🇮🇪

I haven’t read Strange Flowers but Donal Ryan is excellent 😊 also, seems like you don’t need to add to this list but have you read Trumpet by Jackie Kay? Kay is a biracial, lesbian Scottish author and Trumpet explores a lot around gender, sexuality, and family connections. It was first published in 1998, so in a lot of ways it felt ahead of it’s time to me.

"If you want to make a case for [James Joyce]..." Haha. I'm always game. :) "Eveline" from Dubliners is only five or six pages. Would take less time to read than an Anna Burns paragraph. :) I've got a hankering for Trevor, but only own his 1200+ page "Collected Stories". And once I start, I know my brain will want to finish it. :) Happy reading, Greg!

Hi Greg! I've read 3 novels by Niall Williams: Four Letters of Love (sadly a terrible disappointment), History of the Rain and This is Happiness, which were both 5-star reads for me. I think This is Happiness is the strongest 5-star; it is certainly not a fast-paced/action-packed book, but I was completely enamoured by it. The prose is wonderful, the characters are so vividly depicted in all their quirks, and there is also a good bit of humour among the more reflective and emotional parts. If you get to it, I hope you'll like it too. 😊 Happy reading and happy travelling!

What fun! Two years ago I did a Read Ireland challenge for the year and had a great time. I’m always a champion of Toibin, and you can’t go wrong with either of those. I am going to suggest that it would be a great experience to take his recent poetry collection, Vinegar Hill, as a book or audio along, with you on your trip to read/listen sporadically throughout your adventures. You and Joel could wind down at the end of the day reading a poem or two to each other. Many of them capture Ireland as a sense of place and would be heightened by listening to them in the environment. One of my favorites was about him walking through Dublin visiting the locations where all his favorite movie theaters were located that are gone. Many of them are about the Gay experience as well. It could even be a book you wait until you get there to purchase and incorporate it into your trip that way. It would probably be easier to get ahold of a copy there anyways. I think I’m ready to read Milkman this month as well. It’s been lingering in the background for many years. If you feel like dipping into a play, Dancing at Lughnasa is a masterpiece. Or watch the film, it’s really one of Meryl Streep’s greatest roles.
@SupposedlyFun
@SupposedlyFun 7 месяцев назад
That's a fun idea about taking Toibin's poetry along! We ended every day in Italy by sitting with a glass of limoncello to write down what we did that day, so a poem or two would fit in perfectly. I've never read (or seen) Dancing at Lughnasa, but I adore Meryl Streep so that's perfect as well!

Anything by Colm Toibin is so worthwhile but I particularly enjoyed The Master, and The Heather Blazing one of his earlier works. John McGahern wrote That They May Face the Rising Sun which was a fictional account of his moving to rural Ireland with his American wife. He is one of my favourite Irish writers. By the way, Niall Williams also has an American wife and spent some time working in New York. He wrote a memoir of returning to rural Ireland and living through the wettest of summers - be prepared! Loved both Strange Flowers and Days Without End. Hope you have a wonderful trip.

That is quite the list! I have only read three: Dorian Gray - read a million years ago. Remember liking, but not much else. Strange Flowers - liked, didn't love. This is Happiness - swoon. Five Stars. Have you read The Colony by Audrey MacGee? Themes of identity and colonialism, religion, artistic expression, language, community - a recent Booker long-list title (same year as Keegan's Small Things Like These I think). Incredibly moving, beautifully written. Highly recommend.

Please prioritize Colm Toibin- I love all of his books and I think The blackwater lightship suits your tastes perfectly! I have read and like all of Tana French's books and love In the Woods best. The only way I could consume Milkman is on audio, as I couldn't stand the small-font- no-paragraph reading experience 😊. To describe Maeve Binchys books as palate cleanser is accurate, her books are light and cute, nothing substantial. I hope you have a lot of fun with your pile of possibilities!

I always include Irish authors in my reading each year because I love them so much - I think they have such a deep connection to and beautiful way of writing about the experience of being human. If you can, I would highly recommend leaving plenty of room in your suitcase so you can stock up on books while you're there. Paperbacks in the UK are sooo much cheaper than the US these days, although that never used to be the case. You'll rarely pay more than £10 ($12.50) for a fiction paperback and can usually find new releases heavily discounted. For example Demon Copperhead in paperback cost me £7.50 ($9.40) in England last month. In the US, it's listed at an insane $21.99 + tax and doesn't even come out until September '24!

I totally get not wanting to read James Joyce. His books terrify me. However, if you ever decide you want to give him a chance, Dubliners is a great option and since it’s a short story collection, the commitment is small and it doesn’t include any of the experimental gobbledygook that he is famous for. There is one specific story called Eveline that I still think about to this day. I hope you have a great time on your trip!!!
