I couldn’t find a skirt band tool like Randy shows anywhere. Then I remembered a pair of Snap Ring Pliers (NOT split ring) that I used for one repair and never took out of the tool cabinet again. They work great for stretching the rubber band open while I thread the skirt material through. I always wire tie the skirt and then remove the rubber band after it’s tied.

I’ve been tying you own jigs and spinner baits for years. A few years ago I got into making my own plastics. It’s really not a money saver just more satisfying. I really got into the plastic baits because I wanted specific color trailers for some of my jig designs. It’s just so satisfying making and catching fish on your own creations. I have several molds I have bought as well as made. It’s kinda addictive.

If you don't want to get another special tool to keep track of, I just use a regular pair of needle nose pliers (or split-ring pliers if you have them) to spread open the collar, then roll the collar onto the outside of a 1/2" outside diameter tube (a wacky-rig o-ring tube should work if you already have one of those). Slide the skirt strands into the tube, roll the collar off, and you're good to go. I also use surgical tubing for skirt collars. It's cheap, easy to get at most hardware stores, and I almost always have it laying around anyway since it's pretty useful in general. 1/4" diameter or so is about the right size.

Great information Randy...As a manufacturer of both spinnerbaits and jigs I have transcended the use of silicone skirts...The reason why is many but basically lost faith in using the materials you do...First of all when I first got into skirt production I found those little rubber bands would break free after a time of use...Therefore all those pretty skirts you spent time creating would just simply fall off...I could of continued on with thread tying skirts onto bodies...Personally though I pushed the envelope and bought a fly tying vice that could be set up virtually anywhere...I first started off tying rabbit fur zonkered skirts with great success but also found inherent problems with using zonkers like fish eating the tails and rot forming in the leather strips if not air dried properly...I then moved onto Deer hair and created more successful skirt recipes that have continued catching many fish species...I have since graduated on and now tie silicone skirt strips in combination with feathers, deer hair, rabbit fur and Krystal flash Mylar in various colour finishes including UV chenille over the top of the skirt combination design...I can carry bare frames blade and skirt them in the field or boat and like you create baitfish patterns during a tournament...I believe versatility is the key...Now I know a lot of guys tie stripped rubber or silicone skirts claiming all sorts of success and reasons why one should use those materials...Personally I make skirts that perform virtually with the same behavioural traits as in the way you do with your skirt creations...The biggest difference apart from materials is I tie my skirts onto the jig /spinnerbait bodies so they can never fall apart...As for the skirt tool you use there is another one available on the market for the novice to buy... it comes in the form of a pen body..you slip your rubber band keeper over the bottom body and use a wire with hook to pull your skirt tabs through the pen body then roll the rubber off the end of the pen body to create your skirt/s...No way is the right way of doing it but I thought you may of been interested in knowing how I make my skirts... Great to hear your father is getting better too...regards B.J.

Add the smallest zip tie after skirts is on and it will not slide down or fall apart when the rubber ring deteriorates.

I do mostly the same thing. I use 2 and half to 2 and 3 quarter strips. I make mine look all perfect. Lol.. I'll rough one of the skirts up and play with it and see what I think. I'm really interested in what got you to chop your skirts like that? Did you feel you caught more fish on an old tore up one? Or just trying to show the fish something different.

Hey Randy. Have you ever used a Sovereign spinner bait buck tail jig? Used one for the first time ever today on the Occoquan River. Nothing was working and then my buddy handed me a lure. I tied off his sovereign spinner jig and immediately started catching fish. Bass, bluegill, yellow perch and even a blue catfish. I was in 2-4 feet of water over grass beds. Any insight on these sovereign lures would be awesome.

Good Video. Hope your dad is doing better every day. That "plier like" skirt tool you show is virtually unavailable from my internet search. Not really helpful when putting together a "tutorial". There is another tool that the skirt making supply houses (JansNetCraft, Barlows Tackle, Lure PartsOnline) sell that is cheap and easy to use.
