As you may well have noticed after seeing him covered in bandages and looking like a mummy, Alex had a huge crash while out riding a couple of months ago that sent him to hospital with severe road rash and kept him off the bike for a number of weeks. He documented his recovery and journey to get back on the bike, as well as sharing exactly what happened in his crash!

Have you ever had to work your way back to fitness like Alex?

I'm currently doing that ;) Had a huge crash and dislocated my shoulder-clavicular joint. Had an operation about a month and a half ago, and slowly I'm getting back there. Today I had my first ride to work on my roadbike. It felt amazing as I had only been using a trainer for last month. Still, I can't take part in any of my local cycling club big rides, but even seeing them on a local loop will be a blast. I wish all the best to Alex and any other rider getting back from injury!

I am just 6 months post hip fracture (oil on road). Now fully recovered. Three weeks off cycling, then back on a stationary bike, which is standard advice for this injury. Two weeks later back on the road, although still on crutches. It is easier to cycle than walk in this situation because I don't put my full body weight on a pedal, but each walking step does require more than full weight, with each step. Confidence less though.

Thank you Alex for sharing your journey. Back in 2016 I was hit by a motorist at high speed and the resulting crash nearly killed me. My neck and back were broken in 12 places, from C2 all the way down to the base of my thoracic spine. While the vertebrae were shattered, my spinal column somehow remained in tact. Miracles. All of my fingers and toes work, but recovery was a very long and painful process. I absolutely love cycling... I was passionate about it. But this experience scarred me and it wasn't until this year (2022) that I took up cycling again. I conquered my fear and anxiety, and now I'm nearly as good as I was once was (or I think so anyway). I have a Titanium reinforced spine now. The fusion starting at C2 does severely limit the amount that I can rotate my neck, so making turns is a bit of a challenge, but I can manage. Mercifully, my thoracic and lumbar spine are not fused together, so I'm able to ride road bikes with aggressive geometries, attaining full aero tuck and all. Stay safe out there everyone.

Alex has always been one of my favorite GCN presenters, so it's great to see the recovery progress. I also think these more candid type (as opposed to scripted) videos are some of the best GCN content, like Manon talking after her first gravel race and Alex walking the dog, chatting to the camera. It feels much more natural. For me personally, recovering after a month off with Covid last November was really hard and I still don't feel as good as I did before.

As a (much) older rider than all of the GCN presenters, my experiences on the bike are very different. I had a small crash two years ago and suffered a minor shoulder impingement. It took a full six months to heal. Younger riders like Alex can heal a lot more quickly. It's a very different thing for us seniors.

Thanks for the video Alex, I can totally relate. I fractured my T11 vertebrae 2 weeks ago during a crit race where my rear tyre exploded while railing a corner. Spent a week in hospital and had the vertebrae fused. Patience is the hardest thing for me. I’m hoping to be allowed on the trainer in a couple of weeks and on the bike IRL in 10 weeks. It’s made me more motivated to train even harder once I’m better.

Broke my hip on the 26th Feb, had to wait until 17th April to get on the trainer. First road ride was 28th May. Then cycled to Cornwall and back over six days at the end of June. It was this charity ride that gave me the motivation. I definitely needed a target to aim at, even if family were really against me doing it. The first month was harder than expected. Lost a lot of muscle and fitness.

Great video! Remembering my first bad crash in 2009. Broke my left collar bone in 4 places and a bone in my right hand. To make matters worse I had ironman New Orleans in 5 months. Surgery first, four plates to put the collar bone together and 2 bone screws in my right hand. I told my ortho surgeon that my race was in 5 months. He replied "As long as you're not a wimp we will get your ready". The greatest beside manner this patient could ask for. I had to train on the stationary bike for about a month (maybe a little more) and swim workouts were out of the question for the same period. With a great plan from my coach and the encouragement of the Playtri (Dallas, Tx) club I was crossing the New Orleans 70.3 finish line 5 months later.

Glad to see you are on the mend👍 I too know crashing sucks. Like many I can relate, went down on my motorcycle, took a few weeks to recover. I also too had my share of injuries over the years working as a airplane mechanic. Almost like my journey of going from 111 kg to 68kg I also used to walk with a cane ( I have arthritis) getting rid of all off that fat with walking-running and now a bicycle all help with that and I enjoy both activities.

Congratulations on your recovery, Alex. Last time I crashed I spent hours picking gravel out of my wounds. Firstly, caring for your garden is more important than cycling, What is the point of being healthy if you don't have a garden to enjoy your heath in? Secondly, I had a rough time recovering from 30 years of sedentary life. I started by walking, then by vigorous hiking, and finally moving to a bike. (never running) I dropped 35 kg in two years and can now ride 100 km easily (with 1.5 km of climb) or 100 mi if the weather is right and I can find a day to do it in. My point is walking is a great way to start a recovery plan. And gardening.

I actually started cycling because of an injury. I was an adventure racer, distance runner and climber and broke my back in 2 places, arm and neck fractures and could not walk for 5 years. So, my fitness sport to come back was of course mountain biking, hah. I just recently bought a road bike to help with workouts for a XC Race coming up and looked at it as a necessary nuisance and have now fallen in love with road riding! I am currently busted up with 3rd Degree burns on both knees and massive abdominal surgery, so coming back is going to be a long haul. Your video was encouraging so thank you and God be with you on your road to complete recovery!

This video is so important. Not just for recovering from a bad crash and being off the bike for a while. But for anyone taking time off after having a child, intense workload, sickness or poor conditions. Personally I've been through this a couple times, recently getting back into racing after a 5-year gap to focus on work. I found that easing things up is the way to go. Start with just 20-mile rides, few times a week, then 30, then 50 and up. Don't ride with headphones, it upsets your heartrate and breathing until you get back into it. Take lots of water, food - Your body gets out of the habit of being a camel!! Also join a good club and do club rides at least once a week - It really helps!

What inspired me most was seeing you out of puff and sweating just walking uphill - because that's how I feel (and you're a lot fitter than me)! Great video, and very pertinent to me especially. I'm currently ten and a half months in following a nasty smash back in October last year. I broke my wrist in three places, ripped the ligaments off the back of my wrist and required surgery to fix the ligaments and pin one of the breaks. Unfortunately the bone that was pinned was the scaphoid and it didn't heal, so as a result the bone has died. Whilst I am waiting for the next surgery I'm completely unable to ride as cannot put any weight through my wrist, and with the splint I'm forced to wear cannot get my wrist in a position that's comfortable for more than a few minutes. Next surgery is a biggie as they are taking a graft from my thigh, so the rehab is gonna be interesting. Watching your and GMBN videos as well as a few other channels is what's keeping me sane!

Like others that have commented about recent troubles, on July 25 I had the worst crash I've ever had. Landed on my face rendering the helmet a mute accessory, 3 fractures on the left cheek bones (reconstruction surgery required), 5 stitches on the chin and a broken left wrist were the worst of my injuries. Thanks for sharing this. Seeing how you were bandaged up in the videos I knew nothing good happened. For the life of me I cannot remember the actual wipeout, nor the 3-5 minutes after. I have just begun short outings of 35-45 minutes but not riding (as many of my friends have suggested) is not an option. @53 I'm too young to be throwing in the towel. Your efforts in recovery are helping me in mine. Stay confident, stay positive!

Thanks for this Alex - really good video! I cracked my skull in 1995 and it still affects me today - lost my sense of taste and lost any sense of feeling on the left side of the body (I could stick a pin into the arm and couldn't feel it), mostly recovered but the sense of taste never returned properly. Some crashes have far longer consequences than anyone expects, but it could have been much worse! I do still reach for the brakes earlier than I would have done, I guess after after more than 25 years that's now a natural progression to taking less risk due to age. as an aside - I really like the lost lane films on GCN + - that makes so much sense to the way I view bikes in my life now. Without the accident though I would never have applied for the job I've got, I would have been less likely to meet my wife and so the impact of the accident (pun intended!) was not all negative. Also - I was lucky that I was found unconscious near Cheltenham by a nurse who happened to be passing by who probably saved my life. She also returned my bike to my flat while I was in hospital for 3 weeks or more. Never got to thank her! However I still try to repay her kindness by always keeping both first aid and bike repair stuff in the car or van, I'll always stop if I see people with mechanicals or other issues that I can help with or provide the tools for them to sort out their own issues. I like to think we would all do this, for me there's a really personal element to it- so don't always fear white vans with highway maintenance chapter 8 stripes on them, we may be helping you..

I injured my knee a week and a half ago and have not been in the saddle since then. Ortho surgeon says the (reparied) ACL is still i onI bike and do jogging alternately. It was the running thing that did me in. I always do soo much better with cycling than running and it looks like cycling is going to get me going in regards to just getting around. This video and what you've shared is going to be much of the basis for my starting my recovery program. The psycological shares were the best inspiration. I find this the toughest part. Thanks for sharing this. Such a great value to reveal the mindset part of it all. Thanks so much! DenCoDave

One of my most severe ones was literally just a relaxing ride along the river. a jogger stepped into the cycle lane infront of me. I went down and hit my head first. Life or at-least serious head trauma was prevented by my helmet according to the Dr. After that, I once lost control on a rainy mountain 4 years ago. It actually felt like divine intervention that i didn't crash. i still remember the gut wrenching fear that shot through me that second. I thought I was about to be a mangled body on the road.

As much as we all bike we think that we will never crash on the road, but then our tire slips in to a crack, we overlook some debris or hit a puddle of oil and we are down and out for a long time (longer as we age.) Fear of crashing is the one aspect of cycling and MTB really holds me back Cheers on your recovery

Thank you. About 5 years ago I ran into the expanded polystyrene from a bumper while going through a dark underpass on my Pinarello. Went over the front tried to roll, but still broke three ribs in my upper right back. It was three weeks till I got on a bike and I had to use my flat bar. Still hurt but took it slow, I was grateful for a co-worker who rides. He just showed up at the hospital and helped me get home plus retrieve my bike from the fire department. It took a couple of weeks but I got back on the road bike.

Thanks for sharing your story Alex. Back in May I hit a pothole which punctured my front tire sending me sprawling on to the ground and smashing my collarbone into several bits. The road to recovery is proving to be a bit tortuous but I'm so glad I've got a turbo to keep me sane (and safe) - but watching the scales go the wrong way for a while was upsetting after all the hard work I'd done to get fit over the last 2 years. The psychological impact of the crash was definitely worse than the physical in my case but I'm now heading in a positive direction (still not attempting a ramp test though!)

For me, it has been almost two years now, pedaling down Decker Canyon here in Malibu trying to gain more speed while training for another ride.... I was suddenly airborne over the bars. Both hips were broken and I could not stand. I called the paramedics myself though and got a wonderful ride the hospital where i had surgery and got to stay there for a week. I did twice as much work as my physical trainer gave me, bough a small indoor bike I could sit on, and about 8 weeks later, I was able to climb onto my bike on the trainer in the garage. about 3 and a half months after and on my second full ride out, my friends went down that same hill with me..... at a much slower pace. I am glad it happened. I NEVER take any ride or climb (my favorite) for granted. I dont have to be the fastest anymore, or the best climber - just enjoy every second on the bike. I chronicled my recovery as well. Thank you for sharing your story!!! ru-vid.com/group/PLjRYNq211kxxI1cRW6ZzwhKri4i8XRMbX

First of all, I’m glad you’re doing well. When I ride my bike, I feel like I am in my 30s. But I have to keep remembering that I am 71 years of age. If I have an accident, recovery will be one hell of a long journey. Consequently, I try to keep my speed under 25 MPH. Safety first. Also, FWIW, I just got back last month from my first visit to the UK and Ireland. I went to Stonehenge, Bath, London, Liverpool, and Chester, as well as Glasgow, Dublin, and Galway. I’m not pushing UK tourism, but seeing places in your videos that I have been to adds another dimension to enjoying GCN.

15:56 "I've got a towel wrapped round my neck as if I were a some boxing champion." 😂 Genuinely epic, Alex/Rambo! Impressed by your unfaltering modesty and gritty resilience. You reminded of my only serious bike crash, back in Romania in summer 2018, descending fully-laden the Carpathian Mountains through a relentless downpour and fatefully skidding on a shaded hairpin covered in gravel... Which cost me seven stitches on my right knee at the Bucarest hospital after being rescued by a kind-hearted German driver. At that point I totally lost confidence in my touring bike and was that close from hopping on the next plane to Paris when a French friend in Bucarest suggested he take a couple days off work to cycle along with me to Varna, Bulgaria. In a nutshell, never quit!

Good timing for this video. On July 21, I suffered an acute intra-articular distal right radius fracture with volar angulation as well as contused ribs when I discovered, to my surprise,a leaking front tire while taking a sharp left turn at speed. I was lucky that I was wearing very tight gloves and I think they held everything together so I did not have to have surgery. After six weeks in a cast, I was cleared last week to ride again. I pumped all of my bikes back up and prepared for a ride, but when I took a trip around the neighborhood, my wrist is still not quite ready yet to support weight in that position. I start PT on Thursday and hopefully that will get me back on the bikes. Ride safe and always wear gloves and a helmet. I ride all the time and have never wrecked or broken a bone in 54 years. Don't think it cannot happen to you.

Lately I've been upset of feeling abused by motorists in the busy roads of London, I had a light crash on my way back from work and I'm hesitant of attending the office. Pleased you are on the mend Alex, story you crashed of course! My experience has been to focus on the rehab work and take pleasure in that, rather than obsess about missed rides, races and experiences. I switched off data so there wasn’t the constant reminder of “shortfall”! By enjoying the rehab, I have improved some previously neglected areas, a bonus. Riding is now possible again and anything is better than nothing. As you said, the accident is quick, it’s the recovery that takes time. Mentally, knowing what caused the crash helps my mind remove / mitigate the risk. Had I not known, I would have carried anxiety. Keep up the great videos Alex and team.

Good part is my knee is healing. And riding has helped get flexibility back along with a lot of stretching. I am focusing on keep moving and fun,not how far and fast I'm riding. Weeks if agony sitting at the kitchen table with a pillow on my chest was pure torture. After a month or so I improved in terms of pain , eventually I got back on the bike but the last 4 months I've suffered from a frozen shoulder, thankfully I'm seeing an improvement in the pain after steroid injection but it's been a hell of a year.

So many times leaving hot yoga, another student would say something like 'I don't know how you can ride your bike home, I'm so tired after all that!" And then get in their car to drive home. I'm sure they were just trying to connect with me and meant no harm but that gets in your head when your friend got hit by a car. People say seemingly innocuous things allllll the time. Your headspace had to be a huge part of your recovery but less time was spent on how you addressed it directly. I think the main thing I'd want to know from you, or any of the GCN family here, is what was the LAST thing you wanted to hear during your rehab/recovery? What was helpful? (PS I know he wasn't hit by a car but if you really want to cover this topic fully, I think it has to be included.)

Thanks Alex for your inspiration. I crashed 3 months ago at 40 mph going downhill after my back wheel apparently hit a rock and blew out. I found myself standing off the side of the road amongst rocks and barbed wire not knowing what happened, still don't. My helmet literally saved my life,(thank you Lazer). I was assessing myself after I called the ambulance service I work for and thought I might have a brain bleed due to the damage but fortunately it turned out to be a concussion. Lots of road rash everywhere, swelling near my tibial plateau and tibial shaft, looked like a closed fracture, deep tissue trauma only. (I had the other Paramedic that was working that day assess my bike first to make sure it was okay first, priorities, priorities) CT and MRI showed no major damage but there have been several bottles of naproxen, and some muscle relaxers to aid recovery. I've been back on the bike a couple of times but mostly on the trainer and thank goodnes for Zwift.
