Salamalaikum my brother. The same way you felt about "these guys wanna be like Arabs from other countries" is how non-Arab Muslims feel too. In Afghanistan it felt like when certain Interpretations of Sunni Islam were being propagated it was more of a cultural package than a religious stand.

My father told me a story about a murderer who killed 100 people. It was 99 but his 100th was someone who said he wont be forgiven. He asked another man and he told him yes but leave your past alone go to another city. Start over. As he migrated he died on the way there. The Angel's apparently had to measure if he made half the journey to determine his entry to jannah. Correct me if I'm wrong about this story but I hope you keep going and not look back. People will slander you for snitching but it wasnt your intention to put anyone in jail especially if they're dead. Dont beat yourself up about it. You found something solid and understand one of allah swt name is the most forgiving. Even if others believe you dont it's not their journey in life. They dont know your intentions
