I watched this video last June when I felt super discouraged about the strength of my application. This video helped me pull myself together and keep working hard...this coming August, I’ll be attending TTUHSC SOM too!!! THANK YOU SM!!!
Javi, Congratulations on getting accepted into Medical School! As a non traditional student from NMSU it’s amazing to hear your story. Keep on going man! What made you want to pursue medicine?
Hello and thank you for sharing! In a sentence, I wanted to pursue medicine because it combines teaching, helping others, and science, all of which I greatly enjoy. It also places me in a position where I can better advocate for underserved minority populations, which has been very rewarding to learn more about :)
Did you discuss your diagnosis of depression in your application? I have the same problem where my mental health coupled with family problems tanked my GPA, and I'd love to hear about how to talk about this and overcoming them.
I'm just someone interested in medicine. No plans to pursue medical school. But this almost made me cry! Congrats man! It's inspiring to see someone continuing to work hard. Never giving up on their dreams. I'm sure telling your mom in person made every step of the journey worth it. Wish you all the best :)
congratulation! I plan on being a non-traditional med student myself since it's about to be my senior year of college and my GPA is really bad and I think I need more time to prepare myself for med school but you gave me hope that it's still possible to get into med school if you work hard
How does a non-traditional B.A. in Humanities and Arts graduate start to prepare for the MCAT? Should one invest in community college classes for med school prerequisites or study the MCAT?
No matter your chosen major you should be taking all your premed requisites which will start prepping you for MCAT. Then perhaps consider test prep but as soon as you get to campus no matter your major go see your Pre health office for a plan. Good luck!
Yay congrats! Finally someone similar and In Texas! My GPA is like 3.0/3.1. I’ve been a nurse for about a year and half. About to start my prerequisites for med school. I’m worried about my grades but this gives me some hope! Please please please keep us posted ! Love hearing from a Texas friend !
@@javifromyt still grinding, finished both general chemistry classes and a genetics class. Starting Ochem this fall spring! I found out my gpa was a little lower so I have been researching SMPs in Texas and Making sure I can complete those requirements!
@@sierrastewart5725 You can do it. You need to absolutely kill it in all your prerequisites, aim for 4.0s. Use your experience in nursing as an advantage and aim for a solid MCAT score.
Yo! Great job man, great story. You’ll make a great doctor for sure just because of your experiences. I have a similar/dissimilar story- mine involved having a good GPA and good MCAT but not enough clinical experience. I didn’t do a masters or anything like that, but have been working in the medical field for the past (almost) 2 years in a fairly independent job. My first cycle was similar to yours: 6 interviews MD/DO and no bites in the end. This year I got prematched and it was a great feeling. As for TTUHSC, the doc I work for went there for both med school and residency and swears by it. You’ll do great bro good luck with everything
Hey Javi and others, I'm a junior at Rutgers University and I am in a similar boat GPA wise and honestly have never been more confused in my life if I should even attempt to pursue Medschool due to my gpa. I know that medicine is my passion and that I could never end up doing anything else, and my countless hours during the pandemic as a 911 Emt has proven to myself that I want to continue to help people in need even more as a doctor one day. I'm used to having the odds stacked against me, and usually I end up overcoming the adversities. This circumstance is no different except that I don't know what I should do to overcome this barrier. My freshmen year I slacked off a lot partying getting distracted etc. with a 2.1 GPA, but I cleaned up my act and now my junior year first sem completed I'm at a 2.778. My school offers little to no guidance. I know that I can do it, but I just need a direction and path to follow. Any help would be appreciated :) .
Congratulations! I have a very similar story with a 3.29, masters program, and scribing experience - now I'm a nontrad first year at UTMB. Cheers to the class of 2024!
Hey Javi, this is a-a-Ron. we met at the latest applicant seminar and FHPE at tech. Looking forward to watching ur journey as u and daemar go thru med school!
@@javifromyt it's been a minute but I have kind of a lingering question. Once you get into the masters, what the difference between applying to med school without the masters and with it considering without it one needs LORs, and to be able to account for work history? How do you account for that if ur applying upon completion of the masters, where do u get the LORs or are some of the original facets of the application sorta irrelevant at that point?
Thank you so much and Congrats! You just gave me hope that I can still make it!!!!! By the way did you take an MCAT prep course the second time around?
What a great story! As a nontraditional student (over 30 years old), do you think not having any research or volunteer experience will hinder one from being accepted? Thanks for your time! Best of luck on your journey!
Hi! I dont think the research matters as I assume you've been working! Volunteering wise, I would suggest finding something you can be passionate about to do on the weekends/when you have time!
I’m so glad I came across this! I’m a senior at a&m and have been looking into special masters programs and had no idea this was a thing at tech!! definitely going to look into it
Congrats on your acceptance! What is the graduate program or the program that offered you the time to do teaching assistant and take med school classes with med students? Any suggestions on picking SMPs or post-baccs?
Thank you for sharing your no trad journey masters?, then deciding to scribe then dealing with rejection and figuring out your next plan for success. Congrats on getting in and staying focused on your goals. Gaga would be proud!!
Hi Javi, I understand if you do not respond back I know you probably get a lot of people asking to speak with you and I cannot imagine just how busy you must be. My name is Denton and I am a senior in college here in Texas. My fall semester of my freshman year in college I went through A LOT, and I went from being in the top 10% of my class having a 3.98 high school GPA to a. 2.1 freshman uGPA. My home of 20 years flooded just three days after I left for college and I was not able to go back to see my family for weeks (keep in mind this is the first time I have ever really stayed away from home for more than a few days) this sent me into a deep depression and unfortunately, my grades reflected this. I knew my parents and my three younger siblings were basically homeless while I was living in an amazing dorm room/apartment and this broke my heart. Spring semester rolls around and my girlfriend at the time, now my wife, told me she was pregnant with our baby girl. I have never in my life been more terrified than I was during this moment, I thought my life was over and that I would have to drop out of college. I worried for just over 5 months before we told our parents, I dont know how we hid it for that long, but we did. One night when I was driving back to college from a long weekend of working on my parents house, I was rear ended and my new car that I had just received as my graduation present was totaled. The very next week I got a job at a tech center working Monday-Saturday 2pm-11pm. These hours kind of screwed the amount of studying I should have been taking part in. However, after being put on academic probation because my GPA was under a 2.5, my dad sat me down and chewed me out, threatening to cut me off. If he wouldn't of done that I would most definitely be working in a chemical plant in SETX right now, rather than following my dream to become a physician. Since the end of my freshman year I have had an upward trend of 3.9 GPA (made one C when my house flooded for the second time around, words cannot describe how much I hate these hurricanes). I think one of the major reasons that I am exploiting this information is due to the fact that the main reason I want to become a physician is because of a therapist I went to during my highschool years for my depression and anxiety, she was amazing. I was just wondering if you could give me some tips on what would be appropriate to put into a personal statement regarding depression and anxiety and how schools look at reinvention and upward trends like mine. Even if you don't reply I just wanted to say thank you for all the awesome content and advice. ~Denton F.
Message me on instagram! I'd love to discuss this more with you. But these are events that definitely shape a person and it can also help you with getting into medical school if done well. Follow me @javalava2011
Wow I’m soo happy for you!!! && im going back to school in the fall after a break (senior year). Goals to upgrade my GPA! Same journey!! Keep making videos ❤️
Love your story because it’s actually relatable and very motivating!!! Congratulations on getting into medical school! Wishing you all the best! You can do it! 🤗✨❤️
Lol I am literally crying for you here. I know how the grades seriously haunts you. I can’t wait till I can feel the weight of my awful grades will be lifted off of me.
Thank you for this video. I am about to graduate from undergrad this may. I have a 3.0 for both my cGPA and sGPA. I had some rough undergrad years that contributed bbn to this. I was debating on trying to get directly into medical school by just taking the MCAT and applying but this encouraged me to be ok with do a special masters program. Thank you so much
hey hey! it's defs a fight - me and my friend had similar GPAs and applied multiple times (he applied three times) and we both got in after doing this program! Going to be posting more on the topic so hopefully I can help :)
