Best line EVER: "You know, the whole time I was faking it. I actually HAD stone tools, I just wanted to show you that I CAN use steel..." Much respect do David, he is the closest thing to truly living that I know.

I love watching and listening to this gentleman. Not so much for the skills, but the wisdom from life and meeting people. I think his segment on NO MAN'S LAND was the best of that series. He has a quiet calm and has clearly learned to live in harmony with nature, not to fight against it.

That was great! I've known about David since I was a kid and always wanted to meet him growing up in the southwest. I was saturated on native culture and only living an arms length away when he taught in Tucson. Larry's book was the first one I had also . Did a hand drill fire when I was probably 11 or so and made a self bow . My parents didn't know I built the bow and an arrow so I kept it hidden thinking I would get in trouble. I later heard about Rabbit Stick and always intended on going but life happens. Might make it yet now that my wife and I are more likely to travel. Great video 👍

Wait a minute...you mean to tell me there wasn't an 80 year old displaced Apache wandering the woods in New Jersey in the 1960s that taught a young white boy all the secrets of the universe? I'm floored. - Great video, man. I think I was 19 or so when the movie "Castaway" came out and I was totally impressed with the fire-plough scene. Come to find out, Dave, Dave, and Steve were the consultants for the movie and had filmed a promo showcasing primitive survival skills. That was my very first entry, other than Jeremiah Johnson (which Olsen consulted for), into primitive skills. I exhausted myself on a canoe trip trying to make a plough ember shortly after watching their promo for the movie. Didn't try again for several years but now spinning embers is a huge part of my life. I'd love to meet Dave one day and shake his hand. - Definitely looking forward to more videos like this!
@TJackSurvival

Have you ever heard the story of who came up with Wilson in the movie? It was a volleyball Dave and Dave found on the beach and one of the three of them was making fun of a film crew member and eventually, Wilson was born. But it does play a pivotal part in survival with the emotional needs of humans. I'll have to get Holladay to tell the correct version of that story. Not my chopped up version here.
@TJackSurvival
@TJackSurvival 6 лет назад
Go to the RU-vid channel BladeHQ and look up the fire plough video and you can watch me crush myself failing at trying it with cottonwood. To this day only hibiscus works for me. It's a skill I too need more experience to master.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but when he made fire, he did a joke about primitive man discovering fire, and the first thing he did with it was warm his butt. Pretty funny. A little bit of this guys natural playfulness came through in a relatively serious interview. You need that playfulness to really enjoy doing what he's doing.

Please please please work on getting an interview with Cody Lundin at ALSS (believe you met him at Rabbitstick). RIP Mors, but if you can get someone else at Karamat it would be great too. Tony Nester, Caleb Musgrave, Mikhail Merkurieff, (dare I mention Ray Mears, good luck with that one l... Keep up the great videos.

That one with Cody is probably one of the last ones he’ll ever do I think. He’s really not a fan of videos or RU-vid right now. I interviewed Kelly Harlton, I’m still interviewing more people but it costs me thousands to do this and I have no funding for it. I interviewed Larry Olsen but need to edit it. Mikhail is a close friend and was at my house yesterday. I could easily interview him. I’d love to interview Ray but again I need money to fly over there. It’s all time and money but it’s doable

@@TJackSurvival Ty I think we're acquainted with a lot of the same people. I actually sent you a FB request but FB doesn't allow you to introduce yourself with new requests anymore... I don't know if you have a Patreon account set up, I'm sure people would donate if it meant a big name in the community being interviewed. I certainly would. Even though Cody has kind of distanced himself from the public eye he still has his faithful supporters, and Mears lives halfway around the globe. I was quite surprised you were able to get Paul Kirtley. It would be nice to get the Brothers of Bushcraft back together again, you probably know half or all of them. Larry Olsen is one of the legends in the community. Really looking forward to that one! You really have a gem of a channel with a lot of great content. 👍🏻 -Mike

@@TJackSurvival I've followed Mikhail since the beginnings of Emberlit. I love his videos and all of the stuff he painstakingly produces with little to no help. I still have one of his original wood Cubaya handlines and I asked him to sign it for me. Fine upstanding guy that I've never met in person, but he's got a veritable wealth of information. I think he'd be a great choice for some camera time.

Thanks for making this video. He is a funny and interesting guy. I hope to meet him one year at Rabbitstick (if I can work it out). It is good to know where he got some of his knowledge and then he passes it on to others. He is one who has walked the walk and knows of what he speaks.

one question. why do all guys who live in the bush wear long orange clothing?
@TJackSurvival
@TJackSurvival 6 лет назад
Because the dirt there is orange and it changes the color of your shirts. Long sleves are also excellent protection against the sun.

I totally respect Dave but I get the feeling that if you live a different lifestyle than him, that no matter what you know, that he doesn't respect you
@TJackSurvival
@TJackSurvival Год назад
I honestly don’t think that’s the case. Unless your lifestyle is destructive. I’ve never met someone that doesn’t like the guy. It’s very rare that he doesn’t like people but in my personal opinion when that happens it’s justified.
