#Adventurekings #winchfails #tlr4x4 #iff-road vehicles In this video Peter pulls his Kings winch out and takes it apart in order to find out what has failed.
Why did I dislike this video? You did not really answer why it failed. You did not take off the other end cap on the gear box. You could have banged out the other gears. How were they? Did the winch work after you cleaned and lubed. Or was it not working just because it was so packed with silt? Did any gears break? Did you bench the electric motor to see if it would run? This could have been a great video. Was the failure the because of the poor quality of the winch or the poor maintenance of the owner?
Most winches have breathers like differentials and gearboxes, I'm not sure if the King's branded ones have breathers but should and need to be fitted with breather hoses above expected water level. If you're going to get a new winch and by the looks of that one you are, get yourself a Runva I have only heard good things about them.
Interesting... my Dominator has been in service 10yrs, maybe more. As i send this, im fitting another Dominator but 12000lb extreme this time. Only changing it because the spool is so rusted but it still works fine. Cant tell you how many times this winch has been submerged, at times for very extended durations. Its literally saved my life a dozen times. Ill strip the old one as a matter of curiosity
My kings winch broke the bolt connecting to the field coil ( the one with the yellow insulation ) Kings reply was we are replacing this motor out of good will because you have not done your maintenance which voids your warranty 🤦♂️
Did you use and test this on a regular basis? They advise to test/wind/rewind the spool every month. When i got mine, i did regrease it though and put spray lithium on all the nuts/bolts etc. Definitely better winches out there, but so far my kings has been perfect. THis winch looks like the seals have failed.
Yes the winch was spooling fine even on the morning it failed, I will admit I haven’t serviced the winch . I have an update video coming soon as the internal damage was more severe in the first reported.
@@daviddalziel838 This is probably the best advice. The factory grease is a bit thin, and not nearly enough of it. My winch is STILL GOING. So its over 3 years old now at least.
@@colinsmith6340 Thanks and thats good to hear Col, hoping my winch does the same. I thought the factory grease resembled Jelly more than grease. I also noticed it wasn't covering all areas of the gears.
At 4.15 tells why it failed at 530 is your honesty why. Do not think more expensive winch would last longer with same amount of service. Best destroy it with use rather than dying from being for poising only at soccer for the kids
A kings dominator winch only needs to be taken out of the box to fail . Bought one 2 days ago , wired it today after fitting bullbar on and it winds out but wont wind in . Qualified auto electrician says its stuffed. So i am going to get a refund ,
Guess I owe you an apology. I saw the broken teeth in the fishing video. I see you upgraded to Warn. Good call. If I get another winch I definitely would get a brand where parts are available.
Hi mate , I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to do with the motor at this stage. looking into any interests in a teardown video of it ,given the status of the gearbox it might not be in great condition. No plan to bin it yet
The best thing is regularly pulling the winch apart and replacing any seals re-lubricating parts when needed. The only other thing you can do is purchase a winch that has a higher Ip rating eg IP68 or higher
pull it apart when new and pack lots of marine grease in there - they have almost no grease from new. It will still need servicing from time to time but will handle water and dirt much better
