My grandfather use to judge them at 2 inch and always said discarding early costs you great fish , I don't know much about it but he always use to talk about them to me growing up , he was breeding koi from the late 70,s and was very into the hobby
angry brit highly unlikely to cost you great fish, the great fish are easy to spot. It’s the middle ground where the difficulty comes. Sadly more good go downhill than average uphill......
Absolutely fantastic mark 👏, When you are ready for me to take some off your hands just say the word. It would be great to have some from the first years spawning and see how they progress, especially as the years go by. I'm sure this is just the start of the koi spawning adventure Well done mate 👍🏻
Aloha, I am so excited for all of your success, I just binged watch your first breeding series. I was cheering the girl you on. You can do it, and finally she did and wow did she ever. Suggestion regarding your nitrites, grow more lettuce, or plants of some type. I am working my way up to koi husbandry, currently I have been successful rearing comets, fantails and breeding shubunkin. Look forward to watching your breeding adventure and journey.
I really think you are being hard on the small fish. That doesn't mean they are poor quality. The biggest will eat more, but that's just a advantage. The Japanese don't do that. Some of the smaller ones have just been disadvantaged that's all. Some of the smaller ones can be champs. It will cost you. If you put the smaller ones in a tank with smaller fry, they will have the advantage. So. Lose that mind set. I went to school with lads that were loads taller than me. See them now, they are midgets. Its just the same. We are all animals. You take the smaller ones out and separate them, feed them up, they will catch up in size.
jimmy2minutes Jimmy, 100% size is a factor when ‘the japanese’ do selection. I use the term ‘the japanese’ carefully, because there are many breeders and some do different things. How do I know? I’ve sat with dozens of them over a number of years whilst they do it.
