In this video we take a look at the Kujaku fry from the first spawning, unfortunately they don't seen to have faired too well.
We discuss possible reasons and the way forward as preparation for the 2nd round of spawning takes place.

Hi Mark sorry to here about the losses but I'm sure you will still produce some nice koi from the spawning. Keep up the good work and look forward to the next vid 👍

Way to stay positive. It’s just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes and I’m sure you covered all possible bases to keep them in optimal health. Looking forward to your next spawn.

Had the same thing, starting with thousands and within two weeks maybe a hundred. I also believe iets a food thing. A found some stray Fry in nu vortex that were 5 Times the size of the Fry in the net

Hi Mark thanks for the video very interesting indeed. I had the same problem last year with my net getting absolutely filthy, hence parasites and the lot. Struggled to hold on to any Fry. However I have 17 left out of millions that I did have. These things are sent to try us. I'm half thinking would we stand a better chance in a huge fish tank once they come hatch and come along until we get some weight behind them. 🤷‍♂️🙏⛩️🈂️KC

what's the difference between a 'huge fish tank' and a 1000+ gallon fibreglass tank? Realistically nothing, and the challenges remain to keep it clean, and to prevent fry escaping where they shouldn't....... It worked last year, shouldn't have tried to shortcut this year......

It's a shame about the losses, but it looks like you still have quite a few dry. Like you said it's an learning experience, and hopefully you can take something from it. Enjoying these updates, hope you get some good koi from all your work.

That's the way it goes Mark when you are dealing with fish, as you probably know. It's unfortunate mate so push onward and keep up the good work.

Hi Mark I wonder is that flakes that you are feeding in conjunction with yolk. I had similar fry losses last year and is looking forward to see how this batch developing in the coming videos. Great stuffs!

Very fine powder, not flake. I did use brine shrimp flake last year and that was an equally messy option. If the flake wasn't eaten on its way to the bottom it was seemingly ignored and became a gluey blob. Lots of baby brine shrimp to start the next lot of fry, if we get some ;-)

Sorry to hear the negative update, these things happen even when everything's done to avoid them. I'm sure it will be a lesson learned. Fingers crossed the small fry can catch up in the outside tank. Looking forward to some better news with the other pair this weekend. 👍

Steve, they are presently getting acquainted in the spawning tank having been introduced this morning - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h5pMc8pl_Qg.html - hopefully tonight they'll spawn.

Hi Mark. I have been watching your updates. Really interesting to see the highs and lows of Koi breeding. Lots to take into consideration and I think it’s safe to say it’s not particularly easy. I’m no expert, but lots of slow water changes should help. BTW, I’m also going to try my hand at breeding on 29.5.20. Not expecting miracles but very excited nonetheless. Fascinating subject. I look forward to your next update.

Stewart, the tank had a constant trickle of water from day one of feeding. Water parameters in respect of standard ammonia and nitrite were perfect, maybe something building up that's unrecorded/tested. Good luck with your spawning tonight, my Goshiki set went together this morning -ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h5pMc8pl_Qg.html

Gutted for you 😔 I’ve been so looking forward to the latest update, I did wonder if something was wrong as it’s been a while. Such a shame, all that effort and planning. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the remaining fry get up to speed on the new live food, I don’t recall you feeding milk last year to the fry and they seemed to do so much better and were all a good size by this age? As you say, it’s a learning curve, I look forward to the next spawning and fry update I will keep everything crossed for better results this time,

Jeff, you are right, but last year we fed new hatched brine shrimp at the start. Next spawning will follow last years process.

Hope those small ones catch up. Sure they will. Mine spawned same day as yours, only in a tank but mine are much smaller but more evenly sized though. My first time doing them, don't think I fed anywhere near enough for the first week

I have tried the net several times and to me it is not the way to go what I found that worked well was to go with no net have a small piece of net on your bottom drain( you will loose a few fish) then I put clean spawning brushes in the corners of my fry pond the fish tend to hang around them and keep away from the bottom drain but you are doing great and I think you will still yield a lot of good fry good luck
@jeffr1311
@jeffr1311 4 года назад
I agree with this suggestion but I might go a step further and go without anything over the drain. I know you are concerned with it clogging. The way I see it the fry that got though the net in the beginning stayed away from the drains and didn't have the brushes in the corners of the tank like what is being suggested so with the addition of brushes to an otherwise empty tank I think you would have a lot more success. I think it would be worth the try with the next spawning.

Stay positive mate and you’ll get the results your after, it’s a tight learning curve, one which I would not attempt, could you not out a mesh sleeve over the drains and continue without nets??
@MarkGardnerNTVfree
@MarkGardnerNTVfree 4 года назад
Problem is everything blocks eventually, and if the drain blocks it’s not so easy to clean.
@gixxermaan
@gixxermaan 4 года назад
Just a thought but couldn't you get some very fine stainless steel mesh and fabricate a large, cube cover that you can place over your bottom drain. You could then take the small fry out of the net, get the netting out of the pool ASAP and see if you have better results, ie no worry about water exchange or dirty netting and water, maybe better feeding rates. I'm no expert but I thought I'd share a thought with you, would be very interested to see if you get better results. It might be that I'm totally lacking in knowledge and that it's impossible to do this but thought I'd mention it anyway. 👍
@MarkGardnerNTVfree
@MarkGardnerNTVfree 4 года назад
Unfortunately anything fine ends up clogging. If the mesh blocks, as I expect it will, you then have bigger problem. Also, such a ‘structure’ over the bottom drain makes it difficult to net the pond. But thanks for the ideas.

Sorry to hear about the losses it sounds like a food issue to me mate, I had similar experience till I started putting a couple of hard boiled egg yolks a week to help the weaker get food 👍
