A "dompe" can refer to a dance, a dirge, a lament, or a melancholic love song. This Renaissance dompe appears only in a single source, a manuscript, currently held by the British Museum, dating to about 1530. It is unknown who composed it, though it is sometimes attributed to Hugh Aston. Also unknown is the identity of Lady Carey. The piece may have been written for the death of William Carey, a courtier of Henry VIII, who died on 22 June 1528. If so, Lady Carey may refer to his wife Mary Boleyn, the sister of Henry's second wife, Anne Boleyn.
I am using only the 4' strings, which gives the piece an overall higher pitch. Because of this, I decided to play the left hand D phrase one octave lower than notated. This also enables me to minimise some of the overlapping notes I would otherwise encounter since I'm playing this on a single manual. But I think this works well given that I'm using only the 4' strings.
The tuning I used is meantone 1/5 comma, which I understand would have been common at around the time this piece appears to have been composed.
Played on the sample set for the most excellent Christian Zell single-manual harpsichord built in 1737. Christian Zell (1683 - 1763) was a German harpsichord maker and possibly a student of harpsichord maker Michael Mietke. This harpsichord now resides in the Museu de la Música de Barcelona. It is one of only three surviving harpsichords made by Zell.

Sample set by Pere Casulleras.

Very interesting. This seems to stand at the crossroads of the old modal system and the emerging tonal system. It sounds like it can't decide which it wants to be. Very beautiful piece. Thank you for sharing.

While melancholic very dignified and elegant. Bravo! Thank you for recording this. It is real link to the past. A musical time capsule.

Thank you for recording and posting this lovely piece. I have heard or read that "dompe" refers to something like a fantasy or dream (like feeling "down in the dompes.") Please everyone, no Bette Davis impressions such as "What a dompe!"

I'm glad you enjoyed it. My understanding is that a "dompe" can refer to a dance, a dirge, a lament or a melancholic love song. I don't think it's quite known in which context this particular piece was composed. I sense a bit of melancholy in it. However it may be, it is indeed a lovely piece.

I’ve heard many versions on Spotify but I think your playing and that tuning you used does this piece the most justice.

Oh no, this is not half-baked. Rather, it is fully formed and fantastically worked. A wonder, indeed, and a salve for the soul. Many thanks for your artistry!

@@thehalf-bakedorganist And it's certainly an exciting piece to "feel" the hesitation between modal and tonal music. Found this fascinating ! Nice work in the description as well. Thanks ! The older I get, the more I listen to Renaissance and Baroque music (Monteverdi, Byrd, Dowland, Gibbons...). Let's say : I'm not a Boogie Boogie man at all !!!! 😂🤣😁 Greetings from France !

Very cool! I enjoyed that very much, I'm really appreciating this baroque-type....I was going to say 'phase you're going through', but at this point I think it's safe to say that this style is your bailiwick, and that's great, because you're so good at it. I mean it, your expressiveness does come across clearly, despite the style not really being conducive to personal flourishes. But somehow you prevail and it's beautiful! Keep it up and no more Messaien around, eh? ;-P

Hi, thank you for listening. I appreciate your comment very much. Actually, it might not be inaccurate to say that this is a phase. I refer to it myself as a "cycle". I'm kind of in a harpsichord cycle at the moment. But I love the romantic and early modern stuff, too; and I will delve into to that again soon with a return to some more organ repertoire (Messaien is generally a bit beyond my ability at this point, though). My problem (and I guess it's a good problem to have) is that I love all sorts of music from the medieval to the modern. So much music to learn!

Cheer ! It sounds both sad and aerial, thanks to the 4' registration. I like it very much this way. It may also be played faster (as I do), but then it becomes something quite different.

Thanks for your comment. Since the possibility exists that this could be intended as a lament (a "dompe" can be so), I decided to go for a slower, more melancholy pace, as I often do anyway. I think it's a great piece however played, though. Thanks for listening.

This is very unusual music. It is so ancient, but it seems as if it was written today. Extraordinarily. However, listening to Bach after that, you understand that this music is older, because it is simpler. It is probably from the 1600s... It is wonderful that such ancient information comes down to us, recorded in a universal language: music...

It sounds completely contemporary. You can add a drum machine and claim it's by the Left Bank. It's the most nonauthentic attempt at period music I ever heard. Great sounding, too good to be real.
