MY LAND ROVER DEFENDER - LOVE OR HATE?!

Watch my journey of living with a Land Rover Defender TD5. As much as I love the car it’s got to be one of the worst cars on the road! I have owned this Defender for a year and here I share what I love about my defender but also what I hate. The 2020 Land Rover defender is much more refined but it doesn’t have the same character of the original model. Starting back 40 years ago this car is one of the most famous designs in automotive history with its signature silhouette.

From Land Rover:
The history of the Defender started in 1990-
1990s: Launch of the Defender
1990: The Ninety and One-Ten range is renamed Defender 90, 110 and 130. Launched with a 107bhp 2495cc turbo- diesel 200Tdi, the unit is superceded in 1994 by the 111bhp 300Tdi.1998: In December, the 122bhp five-cylinder Td5 engine becomes the Defender’s standard engine.
2000s: Major Defender Evolution
2007: A major Defender evolution includes the replacement of the Td5 with the 122bhp Puma/DuraTorq TDCI four-cylinder turbo diesel engine, the addition of a six-speed gearbox, a more modern dashboard and safer, forward-facing rear seats in the Station Wagon. A new Utility body becomes available.
2012: A new, smaller 2.2-litre diesel engine replaces the previous 2.4-litre unit. Power levels remain with Euro V-compliant emissions.
2013: The LXV Special Edition celebrates 65 years of Land Rover. The model is painted Santorini Black with Corris Grey roof, grille and headlamp surrounds. Inside, the LXV has full leather seats with contrasting orange piping and "LXV" (Roman numerals for 65) embossed on the front headrests.
2015: The Year of the Defender, celebrated by a number of events, including a 1km-wide sand drawing of the original Land Rover shape on the beach at Red Wharf Bay in Anglesey; the launch of three new Limited Edition Defenders; and the recreation of the Series I production line at Solihull.

I agree with most of what you say, I have a Puma XS 110, I had the full leather seats that were an option on the XS at the time and they are much more comfortable than the half and half standard seats especially on a trip, I drove around Europe in 2015 and 2016, the Puma will comfortably cruise at 70 mph and above, but at higher speeds you can actually see the fuel gauge going down! The heater is OK, it’s definitely better than the asthmatic squirrel like blower that you have in the TD5, but be warned it will cook your left shin if you leave it on too long. An easy comfort aid is to replace the plastic door closing handle on the drivers door with a soft one from MudUK or similar aftermarket company. I too fitted a smaller steering wheel, but fresh air is good for you. I lock the steering all the way to the right, then I take the steering wheel off and put the boss lock on. Ive a device called a ‘arder case, which is a great lump of a pedal lock, Ive got a tracker, and some other security devices and Ive been looking recently at some dead locks that are made for the defender, another weak point is the rear side windows, you can slide something thin between the rubbers and open the catch very easily, a way to stop this is to put a piece of wine cork in to the catch to stop the handles being squeezed. Nice video again. I would recommend a Puma 110, OK its based on a transit engine, but they will just go on and on if looked after.

Great video Marcus. I live in New Jersey, USA, and own a 1992 RHD 200TDi Defender 110 that I have been restoring by myself for a little over 2 years. It has the original engine that is now 29 years old and very well maintained. My wife and I have driven the Landy a lot including a trip to Toronto, Canada (about 2000 km to and fro) in 2019 October and Minnesota (about 4000 km to and fro) in June 2020 among other long distances (inter-state driving). It runs well and the only issue I've had is a broken water pump. Among what I have done are heat and sound proofing using Dynamat, 1/4 inch Dynaliner and custom Mercedes carpeting through out. There are no exposed metal surfaces. I also installed custom HVAC system with higher capacity that stock. It has ExmoorTrim Elite Sport seats front, middle and third row (lock and fold). The seats are very comfortable and I definitely recommend them for those who can afford. My next plan is to do a frame off restoration sometime in the future so I can overland to South America and hopefully Africa. My advice is to do regular maintenance sooner than recommended by Land Rover (especially for models as old as a TDi which is what can be legally imported to the USA due to 25 year classic car requirement). That way, you wont be having breakdowns. For those planning to own one, you better be a DIY kind of person otherwise it will be expensive to take to your local car repair shop every time. You have reminded me to install a safety roll cage. Most Americans have never seen one and I'm often asked what vehicle it is or I'm told my "Jeep" looks cool. Overall, my experience has been really good and I have not at any one moment regretted owning it.

I love my defender, I have a new e class, and a 2 year old Ford ranger, but I always jump into my defender. I put about 10,000 miles a year on mine, it has only gone up in value since I bought mine. The puma,s are slightly more comfortable, they are torquer and will do 60ish no bother with a decent heater and lighter clutch,they don't have the vents etc.

I also have a 2007 td5 in Keswick Green. Completely agree with everything you say. I got a safety systems internal/external roll cage for peace of mind and it was the best addition I made. I also added rock sliders to help side impact. There is nothing else like them and yours is a beaut!

Thanks for your comment Andrew- you're the first person I've met with the same car and colour- rare spec! Yours sounds very nice- really need to look in to all you have on yours for mine- keen on the rock sliders as a functional item but I think they also look great cosmetically too- which ones did you go for?
@ajs4776
@ajs4776 3 года назад
@@thedoctorsgarage in all honesty, I can't remember! I asked my LR specialist to add the beefiest they could find. I then buzzweld treated them. The roll cage is pretty subtle as it is mainly internal without being intrusive. I added Masai panoramic windows to the rear van sides and added fold down exmoor trim seats. I do like your black roof though, I think that might be my next job... after old man emu suspension, better brakes, led headlights, new grill and light surrounds etc etc.... the list goes on. I use mine daily and love it but HATE it in winter. Tempted by a diesel heater. There are no other cars like them and never will be!

Great vlog Marcus. Yep agree with everything and the 110 i have doesn't give me sleepless nights but is a worry for me being stolen. Since ive had mine ive totally layered up: Pedal lock, handbrake lock, quick release steering wheel and steering lock and ive even got dead locks on all doors. Finally invest in a decent tracker if you get the chance. I suppose if they are going to steal it they will but i feel better slowing them down or putting them off totally. Oh and dont park in daft isolated unlit places.
@thedoctorsgarage

A buddy had a 2014 D90. And having owned an ‘87 Jeep CJ7… I felt right at home lol. The D90 would have blown my old Jeep’s doors off of course, but the ride “quality” was identical. For some that’s a bad thing. For someone wanting a proper 4x4, it just comes with the territory. They all feel like shit in a boot. And I loved it 👌

My 99 110 TD5 here in Australia has over 400,000 km on the clock and is pretty much standard apart from the middle exhaust box and the EGR removed and she will cruise at 120 Kph all day on the freeway!! Having said that, I hate the diesel sound and am chasing a V8, who cares about running costs when you have a Defender!!

Very interesting, it’s taken me a year I reckon to really love my Puma, I’d have sold it by now if it hadn’t been for the pandemic 😷 Security no1 thing I splashed out on, then heated seats. The arm on the door can be a pain in the er, arm, I bought an arm rest from Mud Stuff, it was a bit crap, so I bought a little padded thing to stick on it from Amazon, works a treat. I bought my Defender to go on adventures, I’m still waiting!

@thedoctorsgarage

I’ve been looking at getting a remap on my TD5- lots of people say the same thing. For a stage 1 do you have to change any of the components??
@slipperypenguin4281
@slipperypenguin4281 3 года назад
Stage 1 nothing needs to be changed. Stage 2 a Allisport intercooler, and depending the age of the clutch it might start to slip. Then replace it with a LOF clutch. I'd recommend stage 2 completely safe and reliable. I've got a stage 3 with a vnt turbo. Dyno at 220bhp 520nm been like that 4 years now no problem. For a remap either go for td5inside or empire tuning. Best thing you would ever spend money on for the td5.
