My Large Old Jade Cutting, Bonsai Pots and More, The Bonsai Zone, April 2023 

As always Nigel, absolutely love your videos and your personal input on everything. It's been so advantageous in the start of my Bonsai journey. . . I visited my local nursery today and was super excited to get some small Lemon Cypress, Dwarf Pomegranate and a Cotoneaster. My journey with Bonsai is just beginning as I inherited a couple tree's from a lifelong family friend who unfortunately lost his battle with liver cancer a couple months ago. I'm inspired to keep his memory lasting through the art of Bonsai. Thank you for all that you have provided to this wonderful community!

Good decisions for the development of that jade bonsai. I can imagine that it resembles a Baobab tree. Appreciated the update on the succulents. Are you going to put the "small bonsai bench" on display at any of the shows? I really like the creativity used in this bench project.

Very nice, cute little pots! Jades and succulents growing nicely! We have hurricane force winds up here!! The wind yesterday and today has been crazy! I won't mention the freezing rain and snow LOL No work and no school today(Monday) Because of the weather. Temperatures are -4C to -2C... Hopefully this storm calms before it hits you. Very yucky. I had to put food out for the birds. Ice covered everything. There's like 10 Robins in my vehicle shelter. I've been trying not to frighten them.

Fabulous Succulent Sunday - love your jadework and it constantly gives me inspiration with my own. Regarding the short thick branch on the left, could you not take a wood file and give it some taper? I know it would look unsightly for a while, but eventually form bark and be more in keeping with the rest of the branches.... just a thought 🤔

Beautiful work! Question for you… when hard cutting a tree like this, do you want the tree plump and full of water or dry? What does the mother tree want and how will the cuttings respond to being hydrated? I just picked up an old Gollum that needs a hard prune as it’s falling over and quite ugly as-is. It’s well hydrated but the soil is bone dry. Thanks for the work you do!

Nigel, I think it highly likely that your Pencil Cactus is actually a Dancing Bones succulent… Hatiora salicornioides, whose blooms are indeed yellow-orange. I have several of them. The flowers of the Pencil Cactus (which has very poisonous sap) are pinkish-white. Both these plants are often mislabelled. Do some Internet research to make doubly sure! LOVE what you’ve done with your babab-acious Jade!

Nigel, old boy, the resemblance is uncanny(sorry, I could not resist it).

How often do you water? I had 3, down to 1. Watered at the same time. Was watering every 6 weeks or so over winter. It's only just warm enough to go on the balcony outside, but I'm hesitating on increasing the watering, even with buds sprouting. It's in a 4 inch terra cotta, in succulent mix with extra perlite and some bark peices in it.

Hello Nigel, hope you're well! I have two question: How much stress does a preparation for and a participation in a bonsai show have on a tree? And if so, what can be done to mitigate this? Could you explain your approach in a video sometime? Thanks...take care.... Corey

How old is the jade?

I think i killed my jade. Did a re pot and big root prune. I left i hanging in the garage for one week to try and callous over the big cuts, misted leaves every day. It really dried out, planted it about a month ago ( in Australia) and have been lightly watering but nothing has happened, still looks pretty sad. Any thoughts? Did i do something wrong

I'm not that big a fan of styling unrelated trees to look like baobabs. I have seen too many beautiful jades that have naturally grown into shapely bonsai trees with no chopping and minimal pruning. Jade plants are beautiful in their own right. There is little need to try to turn them into something else.

U can eat prickly pear cactus...dare you!

Baobabs sprout like crazy if in spring you water it with ~40C water.
