I remember Jennefer Jones in the movie "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing". I probably did not know who she was at the time. I mainly rented the movie because of Holden. The movie was OK. She was very good in it. Digging that James Dean double feature. You described it nicely. The Beatles was one that is new to me. If we had a dollar for every video, CD or record that has been released on The Beatles. We could both live comfortably in a place of our choice. {smile} Thanks Mike. Always fun to spend some time with you~ Rob/Boston

Hi Rob! Jennifer Jones was really a fine actress, but she didn't make that many films in her career. her husband and career mastermind, David Selznick kind of limited her work schedule to just one film a year for quite a while. I've started getting more interested in James Dean and The Beatles recently, and I've been buying a lot of Beatles CDs. When I saw the Get Back videos last year, I found myself very nostalgic about the Fab 4.

I too watched The Lone Ranger as a kid of course, we all did. But you know, I liked Annie Oakley even more. People seem to always say James Dean started the teen movies and teenagers didn't exist until the fifties, but not really. Maybe the JD teen movies, but teen movies were around for a long time before, I mean the Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland films were teen movies, and there were plenty more. Have a good one Mike.
@grey1951
@grey1951 2 дня назад
There were also teen movies with Deanna Durbin that were very popular, and many low budget films from Universal and Monogram. But the first really serious teen flicks were probably Blackboard Jungle and Rebel Without a Cause.
@bb5468
@bb5468 День назад
@@grey1951 Yes Mike but not all teenagers are filled with angst and only a tiny percentage of teens are actually juvenile delinquents in spite of what you see in movies, on TV, and in the news. And anyway Dead End from 1937 is every bit as serious.
@grey1951
@grey1951 День назад
@@bb5468 You're right about the majority of teenagers not being angst-ridden. But I think it's the angst that makes for effective drama and gets audiences to care. Still, those movies with Garland and Rooney were enormously popular, as were the lighthearted musicals at Universal with Donald O'Conner, Peggy Ryan, and Gloria Jean. And I had completely forgotten about Dead End! I saw that for the first time not that long ago and it blew me away. Really a terrific film.

Hi Mike. Some cool finds there. Shack out on 101 sounds good and I’d love to see Up the Junction (Ken Loach also did an earlier tv play of it)

Very nice pickups 🛻 I too was a huge fan of the Lone Ranger and that was always on Saturday mornings, And really good recommendations on the serials, I’m a big fan of the Flash Gordon series so I might have to look into the Dick Tracy ones. In the 80s, there was a show on PBS called matinee at the bijou and they used to show a cartoon, Serial and then the feature Like my uncle said when he grew up, that’s how they showed the movies back then. Take care my friend. Good to see you on a video.

Thanks Kenny! The serials are great fun to collect, but I never actually saw one in the theater when I was growing up. I guess they had stopped making them in the mid-50s when I first started going to the movies occasionally with my family. I wish I had experienced them as they were meant to be seen originally.

The Lone Ranger was my favorite show when I was 4 - 5 years old, and I didn’t see them again until about forty years later when I picked up a VHS tape which had the first dozen episodes or so, and I found the show to be quite endearing. I remember DeForest Kelley was in one of them.. Those James Dean documentaries look interesting. Take care Mike..

I remember watching The Lone Ranger show on syndication on some local channels here and enjoyed it quite a bit. Many of those other movies and shows you got seem to be quite interesting, particularly the James Dean documentaries you got. Hope you’re doing well Mike, have a great day and take care!

Hi Jared, and thanks for commenting! The Lone Ranger is really the ideal heroic figure for my generation, along with Superman and John Wayne. James Dean is an actor I find more interesting as the years go on, so I've been reading about him and I really enjoyed these documentaries.

@@grey1951 makes me wonder want all James Deen would have done had he not got into that accident. Perhaps he would have become a director later on, as many actors of that time would try their hand at directing.

HI Mike! interesting observations as always. I remember the Lone Ranger on TV, also Zorro and The Cisco Kid and others meant for young viewers. I never watched any of them. I wanted monsters in everything, so limited I know 😉. Saw SHACK OUT ON 101 on VHS, it just came out on blu-ray or 4K, this reminds me to give it another look after about 30 years. UP THE JUNCTION I saw a few years ago. There are two movies with that title, the other one is by Ken Loach. I've seen the Collinson, which you have here, don't recall much about it. I'll confess something: I've never liked James Dean as an actor, but I guess I'm weird? Being the same age as you, I was 13 in 1964 when The Beatles hit it big globally. Such a strange time to look back on. I only liked their early records before 1966, but yeah, weird again? should check out that Jackson story and the film...read THE LOTTERY long ago (it's all over RU-vid, readings and visual interpretations) and I have some sentimental memories of someone who lent me their copy of THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, in the 80s. Keep 'em comin' my friend!!
@grey1951
@grey1951 2 дня назад
Don't label yourself weird for not liking James Dean as an actor. I can see that he could be an acquired taste for some and not for others. And I also prefer the early Beatles sound, generally up to 1966. For some strange reason, I'm into a Beatles binge of sorts right now. The 1963 version of The Haunting is still one of the best ghost stories ever made. Shirley Jackson really gave me a weird summer this year!! I used to love TV westerns as a kid almost as much as I loved monsters. It's a miracle that my parents could ever drag me away from the TV.

@@grey1951 amazing how much we have in common. I'm sort of joking about being weird.. I'm unconventional in some ways and I have no shame about it. I really identify about TV ..was told I watched too much, but I was a big reader too. I couldn't see how any of that was a problem. by the way, now I like westerns a lot. recently watched WILL PENNY twice, really great one.
