I just appreciate you recording the exact moment you purchased in back in 98 knowing one day you would need it for this exact moment! Sped is always ahead of the game.
What can I say mate? It felt like an important moment. We hired an entire crew to shoot us on film in the restaurant. I’ve had it locked away on VHS for years. 😂
Im not sure about pre aged guitars or the price point of real aged guitars sold looking like they came out of a hoarders garage behind a rusty metal shed filled with animal carcases. I love the fact you wipe yours down and keep it looking as fresh as the day it left the factory albeit it light wear it is getting on the neck. The mods look natural and factory. Specifically the tuners. You my friend, know how to treat a fine instrument. 🤙🤘
Oh brother this was wonderful. And thanks so much for shedding light on high action. I like my action exactly like you and I have been put down and laughed at and told "That is not how you do it!" by other players and techs. Took me years to realize the action is however the F we like it. Much love my friend. Big fan of you and what you do.
Yes Larry! Your guitar and action should be exactly the way you want it. Anyone who says "it should be like this or do it this way" is usually just wanting your approval. Unless it's 100% completely wrong then I'm always like "🤷🏻♂️ I like it this way." I mean, Hendrix should have had a left handed guitar right? He did alright for himself.
@@SpedSpedding Hey Thanks Sped, I respect your opinion (and playing) so much. Also Hendrix did okay at Woodstock without true bypass pedals 😂 Long live high action!
you and I have Standards made within weeks of each other, except mine is a cherry sunburst modded with 3 pickups and 5 way rotary switch. I also have a 98 LP Classic armed with some of the older burstbuckers
@@barrymiller2272 A lot of people have said this to me “your guitars always look immaculate” 😅 I don’t have anyone else to compare to really, I just like to take care of things. Guess that’s why my fretboard is in decent Nick for it’s age. ❤
“What pick-ups do you have?” … oh yes, the same BUZZTONES that I have, Sped!!! … because I not only listen to your posts, but I follow up on them too!❤
The plain top is my favorite. All of this flame is out of control. Don't get me started - too late. My old flame top burst is so faded you cant really see it. You are so right about dark guitars. All the youngsters think treble is a bad thing. You have to cut through the mix. The first thing I do when I plug into a Marshall is turn the base all the way down. Rory Gallagher used a Strat, a Vox, and a treble boost. Page said he say Rory live and went out and bought treble boost the next day. I have a set of early 60s Gibson PAF's and some other nice ones, but my favorite are cheap MIK PAFs, also Maxom super 70s. They are amazing. You just never know with pickups. The standard Gibson 490t and the otherone are the worst pickups I have ever owned. Thats my rant. I feel beter now. Good day.
@Sped Spedding well......the headstock broke at a gig a few years back,(The bass player knocked it over twice). It's repaired but worth nothing to anyone but me. Btw, love the channel....
I bought my new LP (black and cream....with humbucks ) in.....1976. Had to pawn it for rent in the mid-eighties. How much would it be worth today? Don't know. Don't want to know. The pain still remains.
@@SpedSpedding I bought an Epi LP same color about 3 years ago. ..for the same price I paid for my original in 76. $350 Hate to say it but...I like it better. It looks kind of the same..but different..and it is much lighter..and prettier...some how. And it sounds better, if I bother to actually play it. Still, bet I could pay a lot of rent for the original. If I still paid rent. The 80's wee tough. Hey, I was recommending you on a Shut Up and Play live stream the other night. He did a demo compilation that was just awesome. Great idea for a video.
Sped, your Les Paul is a "BAUUT" or how we Canadians say "Beautiful "Guitar. Love the honey burst. We say "Honey" like you say "Honey" . Just be strange as hell any other way really. Cheers
Super fantastic video. I fully understand such an issue with the guitar and it's great that you have a girlfriend who understands and supports you and that you have common passions. I've had a very long break from music. A long time ago (I was born in Poland.. in the cult capital of Polish blues) In the old Polish times (PRL behind the Iron Curtain) of my art education, I had 4 guitars, which I later sold because no one understood me and my passions were not tolerated.. lack of understanding. I blocked myself and even then, living across the ocean in NY, I couldn't buy a guitar (mental block...) After many years, music came back to me and is in the first place an important element connecting my other passions, film, photography, acting and travel. I recently bet and bought an LP from the 70s at an auction. I was lucky. Take care both of you, best regards.
I received my cherry sunburst LP Standard new on 6 September 1989. Made on 5th August that year. Placed an order through a shop in Essex UK that is long since gone. Got the phone call to say it was in, drove like a lunatic to get it. I still think she's beautiful, obligatory neck repair and all. The one piece of music gear I'll never part with 😊❤
HELLO SPED I SEE YOU HAVE AN ANSWER FOR EVERYBODY ! just to tell tell you are so amazing and you bring so natural laughing of what you do but not in a serious way MAOUSSIV . OF COURSE YOUR PLAYING IS GREAT BUT YOUR WORDS ARE NOT VERY FAR .PLEASE CONTINUE TO SEND A LOT .AND IF YOU'VE TIME PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR AMPS . NOT WITH TOO ADITIONS BUT JUST PLUG IN .MANY THANKS FOR ALL
Well Sped that is your name.. i know cause...umm you told ..me. I had wax potted Pups in my Harley Benton.. les..umm SC. But my playing is so HOT🔥 the wax melted and oozed out...yeah So yeah......
Damn they are muassive! My Les Paul Classic is being fretted with Jescar 1.3mm height frets at the moment. Stock was tiny at 1mm. Yours are 1.47 which is up there. I wasn't game to go all the way to full jumbos but i can't wait get it back with a big increase in size.
But you didn't mention the bridge, tailpiece, saddles or the thumbWheels are made of. The modern design in which we have now, it's different in width , weight and mineral used. then There's the thumb Wheels in which modern are made of steel instead of brass, steel gives a more harsh-sounding tone unlike brass thumb Wheels has that classic mellow rich tone. There's only one place on the planet that I know for sure who makes custom saddles, tailpiece, and bridge, brass thumb Wheels. He took an original bridge and saddles chop them up and sent them off to a lab to get the exact brass, zinc and all other minerals so he can make them just like the originals back in the 50s. There's no comparison between the modern junk were using in Les Paul's today. But they're a little pricey and plus the waiting list is around a month or so because he can only make so many in that span of time. I'm not trying to sell anything for anyone as a matter of fact I think they're a little overpriced and if you think your stuff sounds good now without comparing it to true vintage hardware, then there is nothing to frown about because most people don't know what they're missing because they have never had the opportunity to actually compare modern hardware vs. Vintage. Gibson started using steel to save money while sacrificing that vintage tone. No wonder so many videos I see on RU-vid where people are saying the old Gibson's sound better they just don't know what it is. Changing out your pots and pickups will only get you so far.
The Honeyburst finish on the Les Paul is IMHO, the best looking finish, followed by a Goldtop. I’ve owned 2, one standard finish and one faded finish. Also, sounds like the neck could be what they call to 1960 slim taper neck. Love your videos and rock on!
I can’t believe how high your action is. I play like 💩 on high action. Don’t know how you make it sound so good. Beautiful guitar. Do a video on your strat next please.
Your vid on "Whole Lotta Love" inspired me to buy a Les Paul again, I love it, I got the Epiphone Modern model. I had a Gibson LP Classic with 57 Classics Pickups a few years back (Ice Tea burst - beautiful) but my neck couldn't take it! My Strat has its place but when you want to thrash it, you need a Les Paul! BTW - a similar segment on your amp and effects would go down well, I'm sure. Thanks Sped for your efforts, love the channel
I know the feeling. They weigh heavy. I once went for a back massage and the lady asked if I’d been in a car crash. I said “no I’ve got a Les Paul.” “Oh…” 😂😂😂
Here's a thought.... Maybe play the guitar.... Or is that a rude comment..... Very entertaining presentation, but without you actually playing, the video suffers.
i happen to notice that your subs have crept up quite a bit.....since my last visit....love your "gold" top...bit on the heavy side though...but a strong young lad sub 25 like you can hold it with with one hand...easy....are you still playing...??...like your local restaurant....plenty of candles going....
No gigs just yet but working behind the scenes with BXRRELL. Me and Gab have floated the idea of playing a couple of local cafes and stuff. We're gonna put a set together.
Sped, don't want to get to personal, but you left out the info on your tail peice. (And the person on Instagram that likes how you polish your frets is really saying he'd like to polish your, ah, nevermind)
They’re both Graphtech ResoMax in nickel but I just spent more time talking about the bridge. Besides the fact it’s magnetic there wasn’t much for me to talk about. 😂
Great les Paul...and I must say that always I watch this man, his voice and the way he explains remembers me Ritchie Blackmore, what a contradiction...hahaha
Once you have it Plekd, you will never settle for anything but. Every single note will play perfectly. Every chord will be intonated and your ear won't hear that one note slightly out when you play a D chord. Your bends will sustain forever. You will be pissed you waited so long. Your guitar does not play as good as it will after it has been Plekd.
I've watched a fair few videos on here since mentioning it myself in the video. Everyone seems to be singing it's praises. Maybe I should take my main guitars next time I plan on servicing.
Cause I said so 🤣 I say same bout my epiphone standard 93 god help you if you say your gibsons better 🤣 I saved all my paper round money for that to be fair my parents bought me the case 🤣
Sped!! With every post you make it just makes the day much brighter! Not to gush like a fool or ramble, but i did not stumble onto you're channel till earlier this year and mate, i am so glad i did! Happy Saturday mate! Enjoy the weekend and Cheers !
So cool that you finally found me though. It’s difficult to cut through I guess because there’s more and more content creators each year. Have a great weekend!
This is hands-down the best review I have ever watched. I laughed, I cried, I felt renewed. You are truly an inspiration. Thanks for the chuckles! *subscribed*
Sped, if that isnt your real name. I have some pots that stay the same no matter how i turn them.. paid extree for that mod!! Put some Lollar imperial low wound pickups. $300 for the matching set... in my 165 dollar Harley Benton sc-450. If i could actually play it it would be nice... but NO. NO DAMN IT i cant play a lick.. no lick like as in tounge👅 i. Just a sad old man.... oh and you said something about your tip.... now that's just nasty....😅😤
If that isn't my name? Took me a good 5 minutes to work that out.... 😂 it is my name. You know what though if it brings you joy along the way then you keep at it! Does it sound awesome now?
I bought my LP new in 1998. It was made in ‘97. It’s an ebony Standard. I sometimes regret not buying a sunburst but when I open the case it looks gorgeous. I might buy a cheap LP style guitar in sunburst sometime just to fulfil the need to “Jimmy” occasionally.
Mate i know one thing about your Gibson LP, its overpriced! There are so many that are cheaper and just as good. Eastman, Sire Larry Carlton, even my dear Agiles with a bit of work. On side note, my beautiful dog Molly that has cancer is still with me, i told you about her . More guts than that champion British cyclist Tom Simpson! Oh, Molly loves me practicing Status Quo on the couch, with my Agile LP Junior into a Vox super beetle.
@Sped Spedding Fair cop sport! That's a good question! But i reckon you must agree, Gibson aren't what they used to be, and the Indonesian and Korean made guitars are now the ones to get. Maybe this is a topic for discussion. Goodonya mate, i stand corrected. Check out Tom Simpson, there is a monument to him on Mont Ventoux
… Beautiful thing. 🤙🤙❤️ I picked up three Buzztone pickups after watching you talk about them. Sometime after I got a Les Paul. I Need to take them out of my poor man’s 335 and put them in it. Or just get a couple more. Great tip on the Buzztones Sir!
Wish I would have found you earlier!!! Just love your approach, style, stories and playing. I'm now in as you would say in!! Best to you and Gabb stay safe keep rocking the mighty Zepp. The Paul is beatiful.Great tone and clarity. Cheers!!
I have a Standard 1995 and its amazing too. One piece back with a two piece top on KILLER flamed honeyburst (or ice tea, i rlly dont know) finish. Loving your channel, cheers from Brazil.
It is a 59 rounded profile. In the 90s there was no option for 50s or 60s on the standards. The classics had the slim taper neck, the standards had this rounded profile, which is unfortunately not available anymore on us production guitars. I have a 97 standard in honeyburst (the same guitar actually), and I love it. I recently played a 60s and 50s standard and this rounded 59 is between these 2. Very comfortable.
Awesome video. I love Gibson’s. I just wish you could play/hear my all original 1974 les Paul custom same color (Cream) and everything as Randy Rhoads. Mine is the real deal not a re-issue or a custom made one. The tone is undescribable. It’s my holy grail in all my guitars.
Viisi kiloa painava kitara ei kiitos. Tehtaalta se oli siis vielä raakile, mutta kustomoinnin jälkeen vasta oli hyvä. Honey burst on mun lempiväri myös. I like honey 😁.
Of course it's a honey burst. As Jimmy page preferred and as his signature Les Paul. It's beautiful. In also a fan of the iced tea burst. Definitely the better looking finishes. The pickups are nice sounding too. A worthy upgrade. 98 was in the 498r 500t era and they were shit at best.
Awesome the restaurant clip had me in stitches. I think we all do that when the Mrs is trying to explain something to us 🤣and I like the fact you customised your les paul to suit you and make it your own, with string action Everybody seems to be obsessed with a low action, but if you raise the action, the guitar comes to life 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Ah thank you! Yeah someone left a comment throwing shade at me saying I’d done too much. All that matters is the player/owner is happy and inspired. What do you have your action set to?
@@SpedSpedding na ya can never do too much to your own guitar. The trick is to change one thing at a time and not change everything in one go, i’d actually say my action is not far off what you have, from wot you showed in the video when you were bending the strings and the strings above resting on your fingers
All i know is that when the Sped Spedding signature model Gibson Les Paul hits the market i will be in that line ASAP!! Come on Gibson, lets get this going…
Thanks for the guitar run done. What a beautiful les paul, love the honey burst! And great video image quality and colour grading. I had to go have a look at the gear you filmed with. I was guessing full frame panasonic, but micro 4/3rds! Nice!
