In today’s episode I run through all of the gear and the app I use for live-streaming on RU-vid. I also mention some alternatives to the gear and apps I use covering a wide range of price options.
#Microphone #Livestream #Gear
If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses at school.learnlightandsound.com including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders.
Gear used or mentioned in this episode. The links below are Amazon.com, B&H Photo, or other affiliate links. As an affiliate, I earn from qualifying purchases:
- Shure SM7B Broadcast Dynamic Microphone, better suited for brighter or sibilant voices - bhpho.to/2NTUZHi Amazon geni.us/GYU7dHy

*This is *NOT* a cheap livestream setup. It is for a business which provides value to customers via livestream. However, in the video, I do cover less expensive options. If you're trying to livestream for the first time, use your computer or phone's in-built camera. My first suggestion for higher quality is to add a USB microphone like the RODE NT-USB Mini for about $99: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lM020uMNeJs.html Also, if you don't want a big microphone in the frame, that is perfectly acceptable. I'm not saying you must. However, since this is not a narrative film, but a live broadcast, it is generally considered acceptable for the microphone to show in frame. In fact, in some ways the very prominent microphone helps the viewers understand that this is a live broadcast in an unconscious way.

@@curtisjudd I agree; you can't judge someone's gear. I have had people say the same thing to me about my cameras and lights - overkill. But as a pro, like yourself, you need the equipment to get the job done. There are no excuses. I can't tell you how many young photographers I have partnered with on assignments that want to travel light and thus leave gear we later needed at home. I tell them if you're going to travel light then go on vacation, on this trip we have work to do, and we need to make sure we have what we need when we need it. In this video, you were showing YOUR set up, not everyone else's.

Thx for the reply. I'm just getting back into video after like 20 years so I've forgotten a lot. I went ahead and installed After Effects and it does the job. I wish ECAMM Live had at least some basic text animations built-in.

Brand new to this, but I have begun assembling a decent set up. I am currently not planning on doing live broadcasts (though live may be a future option). Current plan is doing recorded multi-cam presentations with screen capture . Am I correct that I would not need a time code device like a Tentacle if I am using the ATEM Mini *Pro* in a studio setting? Am I also correct that the plain Mini does not provide time sync? Also, I have a MixPre 3 II...am I correct that this won't feed directly into the Mini? Would I need to use a Tentacle to sync the Mini with the MixPre? Or is there another option?

Thanks again for your comments during the live. In case anyone’s interested to know this, if you are using Wirecast and you have a suboptimal MAC (I.e. don’t have high specs) you might be able to avoid too many dropped frames/excessive CPU usage by switching from X264 H.264 output to Apple H.264 . I went from 92% CPU to 50% on average by making that change. Edit: thanks for that clap tip! I didn’t think of that and it will come in handy for my darkroom streams.

I looked EVERYwHERE and called stores from coast to coast and everybody told me they had 40+ calls a day about the ATEM mini. I ended up checking eBay twice a day and last week I was able to snag one up and get it shipped in 2-3 days buy it now for the normal retail price. So you might check eBay. There are “back ordered” listings but every once in a while a listing will pop up for them. The one I found was at the bottom of scrolling the first page when looking for ATEM Mini. The seller had about 20 of them. Good luck! They are a great piece of gear.

That's a real nice setup Curtis. For my streaming audio I use a RODE Rodecaster in Stereo mode. I have an ATEM Mini, but since it is only really 1 camera for myself, I've never thought it would be much use. My streams usually involve bringing guests on and for this I use Skype video with NDI enabled. I then setup a shot in Wirecast for guest and myself. I switch between camera shots using Streamdeck. Wirecast is what encodes everything. I have an iPad as a shot too, usually slides from Powerpoint. I record locally to HDD. But with all of this going on I find that the Skype + Wirecast tends to really tax my system. Do you bring on guests via video? If so, how do you handle that?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
Hi Gary, thanks for the details on your setup. I usually use Skype to record locally using Ecamm Skype Recorder though I haven’t been happy with what it does to frame rates. I think Skype doesn’t like 23.976 so everything gets a bit choppy looking. I have not had good luck doing interviews as live-streams - probably my internet connection. The 10-core iMac hasn’t had any issues keeping up but it’s a 10-core Xeon so it’s pricey.
@GaryStockton
@GaryStockton 4 года назад
Curtis Judd Thanks Curtis, yeah biggest challenge for me has always been guest audio, in many cases they don’t have a decent microphone or have Skype on their phone and best we can do is have them wear earbuds. I got the ATEM mini to shoot some panel discussions at the company, and I think for multi-cam editing on the fly it will be super useful once everything gets back to normal. They built us a professional studio with sound booth, control room all decked out with blackmagic designs hardware, we saw it.. then we had to work from home after that, so we can’t wait to get back. Your iMac sounds like a beast.

You are absolutely the cleanest streamer on these topics hands down. I’m doing interviews of A Listers on FACEBOOK Live using BeLive and ZOOM. Currently looking to change due to the fact that BeLive truly has too many glitches and ZOOMS not quality visually to the eyes. I was having webcam issues, simply couldn’t choose a webcam and now you’ve shown that I’m able to use my DSLR for the camera. Ground breaking for me my friend. I will definitely mention your channel of my FEEDS for advise. Thanks again and keep doing the amazing kind of work that makes RU-vid valuable 🙏🏽🎬🎥

Curtis - Great video. I found a great solution for audio delay (because I found the ecamm audio delay to be unreliable). I bought the Behringer Shark FBQ 100. It can delay down to the millisecond ! Great analog solution before going into the camera or mixer. Very happy with it.

I run my XLR microphones into the Rodecaster and have tried feeding the output into my video camera to address the sync issue, as you indicate with your approach. However there is still a 3 second lag between audio and video. I'm using the ATEM mini to input sound + video into Zoom, Skype, etc. Should I insert OBS after the ATEM to be able to deal with this lag?

Another well presented run through. Thanks Curtis. I was looking at the Blackmagic multi-cam switcher with interest. I don't need it yet as I'm ony at the stage of producing my first few vids for youtube. Live streaming video is a great technology and in everyone's reach. You basically have your own multi-cam live TV show. I can't wait to try it, but for now I must stay on course. I have a couple of good iPhones, a Sony A6400/16mm Sigma combo, a DJI osmo pocket with the freewell wide angle adapter plus a very old Panasonic GH 1 with a very good second hand Nikkor AI 50mm 1.2 adapted to M4/3. I think all of these cameras can use hdmi or have adapters. The only one I'm not sure of is the Pocket Osmo. So I have great autofocus and tracking, a handful of cameras and pretty good lights. I think I can film with what I have. Microphones are a little thin on the ground tho. An old AKG ATR55, a Rode Video Micro, one Rode Wireless go a Tascam DR-10L plus lavalier mic and I have a Zoom F6 recorder. I need the obvious : better shotgun mic but I also need to record small groups of musicians, like 2-4 at a time mostly acoustic. I know I'm gonna need a couple of instrument mics. I really like the cheap and cheerful Russian pencil mic you mentioned recently. That would be an excellent choice for now provided I shock mount it/them...

You are the star of very advanced - but still easy to understand - walk-throughs. I'm seriously impressed and I've learned so much from your tutorials. Thank you! Thinking of connecting my Panasonic G9 with the Elgato Cam Link 4K to my iMac (the first 5K model from 2014) and then get the sound from the same microphone setup as you (Shure sm7b connected to my beloved MixPre3 which then is connected to the G9 via the audio minijack input) and then hopefully get a decent combined output from the ecamm live. Any thoughts if this will be ok? Or do I need to consider a thing or two? I only need one camera connected.

First, let me say "Thank You" for your reviews. You've helped me make many purchase decisions over the past 3 or 4 years. Your recommendations always live up to your reviews. Because of that, I'm often recommending _you_ to friends who are looking for advice. -- At this very moment, I'm searching for a live-streaming switcher for the non-profit where I work. I've had the ATEM Mini on my wish list for awhile and was encouraged to see you using it. Is there a reason you chose not to run the audio out of the MixPre into one of the mic inputs on the ATEM Mini?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
Thanks Stuart! Yes, I run the audio to camera to ensure it will be in sync with picture on the main camera. If I run it to the ATEM Mini, the audio will be offset by one frame which isn't quite right for my camera. You can apply an audio offset in most streaming apps, but I wanted to avoid that because I also sometimes just record locally with the ATEM Mini (i.e., feed the program HDMI output to an ATOMOS HDMI recorder to record a video). In that case, I wouldn't have the streaming app available to apply the appropriate offset to get the audio back in sync with picture. I hope that helps and best wishes to you!
