This song is Scottish through and through: Many Scottish poets and song writers published it repeatedly and over a long period of time. And yet, many people consider it a work by one of Scotland's most recognized poets: Robert Burns (1759-1796). The lyrics were paired with the traditional Scottish tune "Low Down In the Broom." While we are following this version, the lyrics were often set to some other music. With just a few words we have included more modern English so that it can be understood more widely.
