for the person asking about coming out: dude. it's the theatre community. there's hardly a safer place to be out. you stand a pretty guaranteed chance that they will all be totally chill about it and support you and also, it's most likely that some of them are also LGBTQ+! (I mean I've heard that statistically, 1 in 10 people are gay ((idk how accurate that is)) but trust me, the ratio only increases among theatre kids)

Hi Kat! I know you probably won’t see this but I have a callback tomorrow and I’m kinda sick and my voice is SUPER STRAINED. I have no idea if the casting director would let me reschedule because she hasn’t responded to any of my emails. Oh goddddd, that question about 'schools restricting content' hit me hard. We have a new director this year (shes very young) and she wants to do Chicago in the spring, but the high school version which is VERY watered down and i understand that we're a high school and we need to be appropriate ...but i would much rather do a show that's already more family friendly than do a sugar coated version of Chicago (cuz i love chicago and i feel the hs version is gonna take so much away from the original vision)

That whole thing on the school's watering down shows so they can do them...has anyone seen the pre school Scarface...it's pretty horrific and I need to have a serious word with the teachers of that school: WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU DO THIS AS A PRESCHOOL PRODUCTION???

my high school was pretty good about not censoring. they had done grease years ago and i’m pretty sure they kept in most of the relatively risqué things. and last year they did little shop and even though they do a show for the middle school, they kept in the abuse between the dentist and audrey and many lines audrey two said like no shit sherlock and the slut line. i’m sure there’s been backlash but also use context clues or research the show before bringing your 6 year old.

When I did into the woods I played Jack. When milky white died one night the audience just broke out if laughter where other nights it was completely silent!!

So my schools board is SUPER conservative and when we did Tarzan they said “well your not going to show any nipples, are you?” So the guy playing him had to fabric tape his clothes down with piece of tape, after piece of tape, after piece of tape. There are still pieces of tape on he walls of the wings for him to put on if he got sweaty.

soo my school is doing Grease next year and holy Jesus I really hope they don't do the jr version because it cuts out SO MUCH to the point where it basically isn't Grease anymore (to give you an idea, Rizzo's pregnancy is completed wiped from the narrative including 'There Are Worse Things I Could Do'. big yikes) send prayers

I deleted Instagram to take a break And the number 1 thing I miss is being able to ask questions for these Q&As!!!!! I have a question I hope you’ll answer, how do you deal with (for lack of a better word) irony when being cast? So I was recently in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream that I was really excited for but before audition I was just not feeling like trying for a lead, I just thought to myself the most you’ll get is a fairy and that’s fine it will be fun you know a lot of people in this cast. So I prepared a monologue that worked for either Helena or Hermia but I really wasn’t trying for either of them. I ended up getting Helena. Strange, right? I guess I was just what they were looking for even though I didn’t see it. Fast forward a couple months after closing and upcomes an audition I have been preparing for since last fucking spring because I have been wanting to play Laurey in Oklahoma for so long and I finally had a chance (I had also been waiting to do a golden age musical with this company for a while). So yea I’d been working on songs like Many A New Day and Out of My Dreams with my vocal instructor, and preformed the song I used for my audition song (I Could Have Danced All Night) at a competition so I could get legitimate feedback from a board of judges. So yea I did all these things to prepare, and guess what? I didn’t even get a callback, not even a chance to show them all the work I had been putting in, I’m sure the girl who got Laurey didn’t even know how much work I put in (mainly because she straight up doesn’t like me) but it just feel so like I did all this work for nothing, and then for Midsummers I did barely any work at the start and they wanted me and I hate it all.

In Spamalot we had to take out a song OPENING NIGHT because someone got ‘offended’ in a dress rehearsal and we had to change the songs lyrics. We were all so sad!

Sort of random but I have play auditions this week!

Last year my school did Hairspray and they toned down on heaps of the jokes and other content, it really pissed me off because their reason was that there are kids as young as 12 in the show, which i totally understand, but with that in mind they should have just done another show. Mark O'Donnell, Thomas Meehan and all the other play writes/Lyricists had an image for this show and every single line was put there for a reason, and in my opinion if you take on someone else's work you should completely respect the image they had, obviously it's okay to have some artistic license but there is a point were its just plain disrespectful. We are doing Grease next year and I'm scared a lot is going to be changed for that as well. If a show is too explicit for a school setting then just don't do the show, do Disney or something, you can't go wrong with Disney.

Ok that’s harsh what you said when you were playing Rapunzel in Into the Woods. I can’t really get all the humor to be honest. And I saw the OBC video recording of the show and I still feel bad that your character and others did not get a happy ending. The second act was too shocking for my taste. And one thing I learned from watching Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends for four years (2004-2008) is mean spirited humor can be a pain. So nowadays I try to be a little more careful with what I come into a show looking forward to in terms of tone and content.

My school is doing Young Frankstein and we are cutting the yodeling because the girl playing Inga doesn't know how and we don't have anyone to tech her.
