🍋 my recommendation is 'the monster who wasn't'. I read it a few years ago and absolutely loved it. Here's the first bit of the blurb: it's a well-known fact that fairies are born from a baby's first laugh. What is not as well documented is how monsters come into being...
I am participating in Middle Grade March, just as soon as I can finish up an 801 page library book! When one of my granddaughters was a baby, she loved lemons. Whenever we'd eat at restaurant, we'd give her our lemon slices to keep her happy. It was fun to watch the horrified faces on the diners at other tables. She also loved the foam off my cappuccino. It was only because of my great love for her that I sacrificed my foam. Fortunately she's now old enough to order her own cappuccino.
🍋 absolute lemon lover here! 🤦♀️ Still eat all the lemon quarters I can get my hands on... And with you for the teeth as well... Will look into reading the Keeper of the list cities series... 💛 And love the nails! 🤗
I’m a little late to the challenge since March is almost over. I have a goal to read at least one middle-grade book each month. Here’s one I recommend: “Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky” by Kwame Mbalia. It’s the first in a series of Tristan Strong books under the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. Riordan’s imprint brings us books of mythology that are based on folklore from other cultures. The Tristan Strong books are all based on African legends and African American folklore. This one was such a delight to read. Tristan, who’s grieving the loss of his best friend, goes to visit his grandparents’ farm in Alabama. The first night there he’s visited by a strange little being (who turns out to be my favorite character in the book) who steals his friend’s journal. Tristan takes off to chase her and accidentally punches a whole in the sky that separates our world from the world of legend and mythical gods. What follows is an exciting adventure that Tristan must undertake in order to return to his world with his friend’s journal in hand.
I loved loved loved Amari and the night brothers!!!! I plan to reread the series of unfortunate events later this year. I plan to read middle grade books in May. 🍋
Hi, Lexi! You should check out Healer of the Water Monster by Brian Young. It was an American Indian Youth Literature Award Winner for Best Middle Grade Book. My son picked it out at the library, and we had a great time reading it. Also, your childhood love of lemons reminds me of a character, Sarah, from one of my favorite cartoons, Sarah and Duck. You need to check out this show. It’s so cute and whimsical! My whole family loves it!🍋
I also love “The Books of Ember” series by Jeanne DuPrau, “The Westing Game” by Ellen Raskin and “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” by E. L. Konigsburg.
We here in Mexico do that with lemons when we are drinking beer or when we are "enchilados" (when we eat a lot of spicy food) to reduce the burning of the tongue 😀
I love when you gush about middle grade. I personally did not get into middle grade as much until I was an adult working as an elementary school librarian last year. In my defense there weren’t as many diverse options as there are nowadays. Now I’m in love with that age group and am always looking for new middle grades to read. Two of my current faves are Tanya Guerrero (How to Make Friends with the Sea and All You Knead is Love) and Kelly Yang (Front Desk). They both have new books, Adrift and New From Here that you should definitely check out!
I love when you recommend middle grade fiction. I have an 11 year old reluctant reader so I need all the suggestions and I love to read them too. Amari and the Night Brothers is great and was a big hit with my daughter.🍋
Ohh my favorite recent read middle grade favorites are: Winterhouse by Ben Guterson Garlic and the Witch by Bree Paulsen The Wild Robot by Peter Brown The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster Cub by Cyntgia Copeland Voyage of the Frostheart by Jamie Littler
So funny, I am currently reading three middlegrades that will fit perfect for those prompts! Maybe I will actually participate in a readathon for once 😂 You should really be looking forward to The Bad Beginning and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. I think you are gonna love them!
Some of my favorite MG reads: A Wrinkle in Time Quintet, The Austin Family Chronicles, Fablehaven, Eva Evergreen, Inkheart trilogy, City of Ghosts trilogy, Septimus Heap, The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding
I just finished Starfish. If you haven’t read it, it’s a good and fast read. Also, The Size of Your Dreams. I can’t emphasize enough the awesomeness of this book. Next for my read is Amari also. Hopefully will be done by the middle of March. 😊

I just finished Rainbow Grey 2 and it was a fun read and I'm currently reading Yesterday Crumb and the storm in a teacup which is enjoyable so far and hoping to get to The Mapmakers, Dragon Rising and The beast and the bethany 2 after that. Good luck with Middle Grade March Lexi.
I love your nails! And just wanted to thank you. You’ve inspired me to read middle grade, and find myself really enjoying myself. Sometimes we need a little whimsy after a long day of adulting lol 🍋
When I was in Middle School ( we called it "junior high" back then) about a zillion years ago, one of my favorite books was "Alvin's Secret Code" by Clifford B. Hicks. It even has an appendix to show kids how to make and decipher their own codes. Last time I checked it was still available from Barnes & Noble. It is definitely not a lemon. 🍋🙂
The entire Lemony Snicket series is really enjoyable and full of adventures- some books are slower than others. I hope you enjoy the series Lexi. You really need to prioritise Amari- it is a fantastic read!. 🍋
Yes!! I’m so excited for my first Middle Grade March on Booktube :). I just read A Single Shard for them Asian prompt. It was beautiful. If you like perseverance and found family it’s a gem.
I am so excited you are reading Amari and the Night Brothers! I can’t wait to see what you think of it. I just love Amari’s character. That book made me want to read more middle grade. 🍋🙂
Hazel Bly was excellent!!!!! I think you’ll love it, but grab your tissues!!! I’m on book 8 on keepers of the lost cities. Really they get better as the books go on. I am loving Middle Grade March!! Are you going to read Pony??
I just bought Amari and the Night Brothers for $2.99 on Kobo! Hopefully I will be able to read it soon, I’m reading House of Secrets and Vamps right now though. 🍋
Hi Lexi ! My recommendation for you is - We Dream of Space by Erin Entrada Kelly - It is a Middle Grade and its set in the 1980's and revolves around the lives of 3 siblings and the excitement over the Challenger launching to space and sheds light on the school community after the explosion - its sad but also humbling - it was hands down a 5 star read for me
Hazel Bly and the Deep Blue Sea is a fantastic (tear-inducing) book for any age! Hope you enjoy your spring tbr. 🍋🌻🌼🌷 Added Scandalous Sisterhood and Dash of Trouble to my TBR. Thanks for the recs!
🍋 Ella and I aren't really participating, officially, but we do try to read at least a couple of Middle Grades each month. Right now, we're reading the first book in the School for Good And Evil series. It's pretty good, so far.
🍋 I just read book 5 of the Gregory the Overlander series, which has quickly become my favorite middle- grade series. I also love Heather Fawcett's middle- grade books. I read The Bear House by Meaghan McIsaac earlier this year and adored it.
I really wanted to read Momo! But I found two different translations and I'm not sure which one to get! Both seem to give off different vibes. And I recommend Temple Alley Summer to everyone who likes Studio Ghibli💖
🍋 These are some good suggestions. I didn't realize that March is the month for middle grade reads. I put a few of these on my TBR to read this month. 😁
Have some lemons! 🍋🍋🍋 I will also be reading Amari and the Night Brothers this month, I'm sure we will both enjoy it! Hearing the prompts, I might add Anne of Green Gables to my TBR for the month (who knows though, I'm mainly a mood reader)
I’m not sure if you have mentioned it before but have you read Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls? I just finished it and I absolutely love it! And if you haven’t I think you would really like it too 🍋
I found your channel a few weeks ago and I love it so much! Your personality brightens my day, and helped to get me out of my reading slump. I have waaaay too many books on my TBR list now. LOL! Thank you so much and I look forward to your videos! 😀🍋📚
Love all the books you mentioned Lexi. Oh my gosh , yes of course I have recommendations! You should definitely read Jane Doe And The Cradle Of The Worlds and Jane Doe And The Key Of Lost Souls both by Jeremy Lachlan, The Lion Above The Door by Onjali Q. Rauf, We Are Wolves and Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief both by Katrina Nannestad. I could not put any of them down for a minute and would highly recommend them! 🍋
🍋I love lemons too! Lemon and salt taste good. When I go out to eat I always take the lemon out of my ice tea, put salt on it and eat it. Nothing smells cleaner than lemons. I started Keeper of The Lost Cities Book 1, so far so good.
You and Gav from How to Train Your Gavin have gotten me into middle grade. Like I'm obsessed and every book you guys recommend immediately goes on my TBR lol. My wish list is like 1000 books long 😂 🍋🍋
Just added Momo to my tbr! I haven’t read The Neverending Story, but I LOVE the movie, and I will read it one day. I was obsessed with lemons, too. I wouldn’t add salt, but I’d just eat them raw all the time. And anything lemon-flavored, I’d have to get. I still make lemonade every summer. 🍋
I just finished reading A Pinch of Magic today, upon your recommendation from a few years back. I absolutely loved it! I read The Brave last year and really liked it. I hope you enjoy it more than the Middle Grade March readathon creators did. I also just finished reading Born Behind Bars and really enjoyed it. Thanks for the great recommendations! Happy Middle Grade March! 🍋
