My Mic BROKE. Can I fix it?

Well crap. It’s broken. In this one I try changing the tunes in my Manley reference cardioid microphone. It’s a tube condenser so the tube CAN be an issue but in this case.. well we will just have wait and see.

How about a video on your process for replacing or acquiring new gear? How do you research, who's opinions matter to you most, are you as brand loyal as other engineers can be, where do you go for the best deal... that sorta thing!

That would be a great idea… However, this one would be different. I was in a pinch. And the pandemic doesn’t make getting equipment easy. But I lucked out.

I'm kinda in the same situation. My go-to mic, a peavey studio M2, seems like it lost everything below 2kHz, and switching btw polar patterns don't seem to help. I was told it was the capsule, then the company has not called back for a refurb/parts (neither those who sold it offer any repair). Making do with 57s and other dynamics, but this one really made the difference for me. Shame on me I didn't have a pair already.

I'm soooo not an amp tube snob... but :) we have a couple of 1950s era Mullard 12ax7's and some low output AU's that are creamy hifi bliss in Fender amps - takes that gnarly edge off of a clean strat or tele.

I’ve spent a stupid amount of tubes and just didn’t notice the difference. Maybe it was buyers remorse clouding my ears?

Hey man, I’ve been pretty torn between getting a Manley reff and a u87. Primarily I will be using it on vocals but do record a lot of guitar and other instruments. Curious of your thoughts. Thanks

I’m biased… I was never totally into the u87. (I can feel the stones being thrown as we speak). I dig the Manley. And would still be using it if I hadn’t kinds been forced into upgrading. That said I’ll be selling my ref 😉

I eventually got it fixed. But only after I had really started to dig another mic. I don’t recall what was wrong with mine but it was not the tube.

Hey. If I recall a cap blew. Led to changing most of the circuit and the tube. Quite a pricey expensive fix.

Hey Jeremy, love the content. Shame it wasn't the cable. Have you got some skills with a soldering iron? Probably wouldn't be too difficult to fix yourself. The harder part is identifying the problem.

So typical that you can't get ahold of an actual human being to talk to and see if they can actually give you customer service in trying to solve your broken mic problem! Especially since you paid a shit ton of money for a microphone that should last 50+years for that kind of money!
