Directed and Produced by Ava Duveray, an inside look on the women who made hip hop. I've been searching for this documentary for a minute, so I decided to upload it. Enjoy, discuss, subscribe.

Lauryn Hill is clearly the standout in this entire doc, for reasons mentioned by everyone and then some. AS she is currently coming back, she is coming back with the same 2 projects that are literally more talent than many lifetime careers. She did all of this barely out of her 20s. Queen Lauryn indeed.

I love this documentary 💗 tbh I think it's a big cop out to say that female rappers were more expensive because of the glam. The other genres have the same requirements and the difference in how many female to male artists probably isn't as drastic. Don't most pop/rock/hell even CLASSICAL need glam squads and tour accommodations. Smh

@mydreamz8809
@mydreamz8809 5 лет назад
Well female artists in other genres are also expensive to maintain according to industry people. It’s because it requires more to maintain and sell the image of a female artist but I do agree that it’s a cop out. I think the male powers in charge in the industry just didn’t have interesting in promoting black female hip hop artists. They were more interested in trying to find a Fergie or Gwen Stefani or Nelly Furtardo to do Pop/Hip Hop records.
@Yourismouter
@Yourismouter 3 года назад
I completely agree, I mean throughout the 90s and early 2000s there was R&B music, which many times crossed over with hip hop. hell Missy Elliot for all the marketing around her being rapper, anyone who has 3 or 4 cds of Missy knows she waay more of an R&B singer than an MC. that was a major cop out, female rappers more expensive pff! I think just lack of interest and sexist blindspots plays a more and laziness on the part of the big companies who just don't want to invest in the craft of female rappers.

From the mainstream, MC Lyte is all time tops for me. But that underground rap (any genre really) is the truth!! Jean Grae is too dope for words!! Nothing against major label-assisted female MCs but there are STILL so many undiscovered gems. Big props to the ones who refuse to assimilate or hate on other MCs just because they can. I have to also give it to those female MCs who have listeners and admirers worldwide through painstaking self promotion and constant belief in themselves👏👏👏

It’s quite pleasing to see how this documentary has aged .. as a Nicki fan i was always disappointed in the fact that the old heads shunned her when she came in the game and discredited a lot of the work she really put into her craft . To see them question whether she’d be around long and THEN to see her reigning in mainstream culture for 11+ years is amazing, it’s proof and ammunition to stay on your grind no matter WHO gives a damn, Nicki Minaj is bigger than most of these female artist featured

underground female MC's could be discovered through unreleased demos and/or the "go-to" distribution of mixtapes; Amateur Night/Opening Act segments on "It's Showtime at the Apollo" and/or "Soul Train." This doc is still dope & fresh ! Word... Full Force: UTFO (the Real Roxanne vs. Roxanne Shante) and of course, a 1980's Latin freestyle artist, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, who was straight outta, not Compton, but Hell's Kitchen, in New York. Sha-Rock : I was thinking about the Us Girls group from the classic breakin' (B-boy/B-girl) / graffiti artists / hip hop (or rap) New York-centric "Beat Street' film. J.J. Fad's "Supersonic" - That song was one of my favorite jams, back in the day. MC Lyte's real voice had to change when she was rapping; just like DMC (from Run DMC)...

I'm glad they mentioned TRINA'S Role in holding down Hip-hop. That Nicki Minaj narrative of "saving" hip-hop is garbage. Appropriating the 90s is a business plan...not a revolution. The only thing this doc is missing is a DEEP FOCUS on the underground MCs and ESPECIALLY GLOBAL femcees like MIA. I can't believe MIA was totally ignored in this doc. Nicki Minaj's shenanigans behind the scenes fucked over the sisterhood...only to proclaim HERSELF the only chick in the game. thank goodness that is played out now...and her musty spirit and unoriginality needs to exit faster.

I love all these girls but I can’t sit here and act like Nicki Minaj didn’t take the torch and hold for a whole decade and still right now In 2020. It’s very sad people really try to negate her legacy. Thankfully her fans will insure y’all never forget.

I agree but I think this documentary was filmed before her debut album so they had no idea how big she was because she didn't have a cultural impact yet.

great documentary. sad the state of affairs of female rap, and "them being more expensive due to accessories" that's some serious bullshit. I lke Cardi B as a rapper even though she's excessively hypersexualized but that aside the wider state of rap in general is not good apart from people like j-cole, kendrick lamar, the uniqueness that is kid cudi, and snoop drops a lot of great stuff. but there is an underground/indie rap that does more left-wing political rap but something in the mainstream needs to come with rap and r&b, and in the UK the grime scene and their hip/hop/r^B is coming up with lots good music. here's hoping a renaissance comes back with a vengeance for rap, R&B and female hip hop
