My microphone solution for the Sony A6000

This is how I stepped up my audio quality with the Sony A6000 and the Sony ECM-GZ1M Gun Zoom Microphone!
In this video I am explaining what options there are and why I chose the Gun Zoom Mic for me. And shurly there is going to be a crisp audio comparison and tasty, bokehlicious and cinematic gearporn!

Well, it depends, on what you want to achieve. The inbuild microphone is actually pretty damn good, for a inbuild on, but it cuts short in dynamic. Especially in the low frequencies.

I know this video is a few years old, but I'm using the A6000 as a webcam for my gaming videos, and would love to use it for vlogging as well, but I can't really take my microphone and mixer with me while vlogging. I was wondering if you, or anyone else could tell me what's the difference between the "gun" and the "zoom" switch on the microphone?

Well, in my understanding, it's two differend recording modes. It changes, how narrow the field of recording is. One mode records more surrounding noice, the other one less and is more directed. Hope, I was able to help you. :D

Yes. You only have to select gun mode on the switch on the side and your good to go. Thanks man. :D

I just bought this microphone and when I install it, I get a message in my "non - compatible camera, what can I do?

Hi Mara SAB! It does that if it is on one of the two modes that it can record in. There is a tiny switch on the side. I think it says 'gun, off, zoom'. Only one of the modes, beside 'off', works for me. The otherone also gives me the massage. But I was pretty confused too at first...

Thanks for the kind words! My interest fell more and more towards shortfilm production and high quality filmmaking, so I kind of lost track of making tutorial style videos. But maybe I will do another one from time to time. :D

dude, i can't use the zoom mode.. only gun.. i have the same camera too Sony A6000.. I am using kitlens.. Can you explain why?

No, not exactly. I heared that it has something to do with an camera firmware update way back in the past. But it is just rumors. I have the same problem. But it works perfectly fine in gun mode for me.

No, that's the cool point of this mic. It just slides right into the multi shoe of the camera.

I just slide it into the multi shoe adapter on top of it. Then I screw it down with the ring on the bottom of the mic. All 'data' goes through the multi shoe adapter.

Seems like you didn't adjusted the audio levels in camera when you put on the mic. It would sound even better if I'm no mistaken. Can you please try that for me if you still own the a6000 and this mic?

@@jankiffmeyer oops, turns out that the sony a6000 doesn't have this setting that's why the audio quality is not so good. This mic performs very well with my a6400.

Once I put it on the camera does it automatically start the audio within the camera or do I have to extract audio of the ecm mic and match in post?

Thanks for your question. It automatically records it on the "in camera" audio. So, no matching sound and picture in post!

Which is better between using dead cat guttman or default windscreen in ecm-gz1m?

Mnnn...it depends on the condicion in which your recording. The default one is perfectly fine, the long haired one fron guttman is for wind noice reduction, so for windy outdoor situations.

Hi Lailabug, no, you dont have to. The Sony alpha 6000 automatically records with the external microphone instead of the inbuild one.

First of all, thank you very much for the nice feedback! I have a Windows 10 PC, quite the beast actually, and I edit on Vegas Pro 16 (old: Sony Vegas). I am thinking about making a film about my workflow and therefor also, how I edit. I hope that's coming soon...

i also bought that windshield huskyy,,, that's really good when outside with windy condition can you compare husky windshield with sony windshield from the microphone? when we use outside

Thanks for the feedback! Well, the Sony windshield that comes with the microfone reduces some higher frequencies I believe, but it wont get rid of that much wind noise as the husky one.

Hi Kristen, I shot with my Sony alpha 6000 and the sony 24-70 f4 zeiss lense, in 1920x1080p, 60frames per second, f4, 1/125 shutterspeed, and my picture profil with saturation -1 and saturation -1. When it comes to post production, then I do everything on my own. I dont use any luts or so. Everything that you see is handmade :D

Don't bother with the a6000 (2014) and instead buy the a6100 (2019). The a6100 includes a mic input which frees up the hot shoe and has a wider range of mics available that are either cheaper and/or better than the Sony mic.

I would like to know why in the hell ANY camera comes without a 3.5 jack. Even $10 cameras that record video have them. This is SO fucking annoying. So I can either get the a6000 for $450 and not be able to use an external mic, or spend $700 more dollars just so I can have a 3.5mm jack. Fucking STUPID.
