» I first began to homeschool, I had a lot of fears and questions. I’ve since come to learn that one of the beauties of homeschooling is that it can be tailored to your family’s needs. I have seen my young children thrive and love learning, as well as improve in responsibility, confidence, and respectfulness. Today, I’ll share with you my simple minimalist Christian homeschool curriculum that is actually FUN. This is how I am able to keep things simplified, cheap and affordable, and maintain my sanity by letting go of the desire to do it “perfectly.” I’ll also share how I got my child to read before the age of 4, and how you can do it too with little time and money. This video is NOT sponsored, however, The Good & The Beautiful has lots of free printables you can use.

Had a minimal style too but with boys...They are more hands on so we learned the Montessori way. Reading at 3 from play activities..this year moving to classic/Charlotte Mason with formal lessons by heavy reading and oral/art narration until 9 y.o.

That’s something I absolutely love about homeschooling! That you can tailor it for each child. Thanks for sharing what’s worked for you because different approaches work differently for everyone, and my way is not going to match everyone’s needs. ❤️

Just because you learn to read late doesn't mean you can't develop at the same pace as other kids. At a young age probably the most important thing is hands on learning.
@YesiIbarra
@YesiIbarra Месяц назад
Oh every child definitely has a different pace! Yes. To me having them read early is super important. It’s helped so much because now my oldest reads things throughout the day that I don’t teach her. Also, when I work on lessons with the younger child, my older child can follow lessons on her own because she can read instructions. This helps a lot. But yes, every child is different and they all have their own unique strengths! Thanks for helping to clarify this.

Thanks for sharing. :) We don’t use much of TGATB, but I do appreciate how open and go and compact it is! We homeschool as well. My kids are almost 8, 6, 4, and 2. :) I’m a bit eclectic and use a variety of things.

Thank you so much for your very informative video and sharing the simple homeschooling life! I’ve been feeling overwhelmed trying to decide which curriculum to choose and what to do regarding teaching my 3 year old soon how to read so it was very helpful. Thank you. My only question to you is, how do you manage screen time with your children if you even do screen time? Thanks again! ❤
@YesiIbarra
@YesiIbarra Месяц назад
I’m so glad it was helpful! 😁 I allow my oldest some time to use the app Simply Piano and Duolingo every day, and a few times a month they’ll watch a movie. Other than that, we don’t allow them access to tablets, phones, etc. (except for road-trips). we don’t own a TV or video games. It’s the best thing we could’ve done! Because my kids love to read.

We underestimate kids' abilities to learn sometimes. But they learn EVERYDAY by looking at US. =) That little sheep book is now on my list & the calendar. Maybe I can find the latter at a place like Ollie's (discount store; who doesn't love a good deal?) Lol. Loved this video!

A video on how you teach your kids Spanish would be so great! My husband is bilingual and I’ve been learning but I’m mostly the one teaching the kids.
@YesiIbarra
@YesiIbarra Месяц назад
I’m no professional, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I would recommend he try as much as possible to speak to them ONLY in Spanish. Kids are sponges when they’re so young and they will quickly pick up what they hear. They can still learn it through books, lessons, apps, etc., but I didn’t have to do anything specific besides avoid speaking in English to them until they were 2 (because both my husband and I are fluent in Spanish it was easier). Until they were 2, I only taught them numbers, colors, etc. in Spanish. Because we live in the USA, I knew they’d pick up English easily. But in case it helps, I’ll tell you what helped me learn English when we moved to the USA.. watching caption shows in English and leap frog books that could read the book to me (because my parents knew little English). I kept hearing the audio spoken in English, and eventually picked up on how to read the captions. I hope it helps! Any other advice is welcome! I’m certainly no pro in this department. 😬

My name is Yesenia too!! I’m starting homeschool this year. I’m behind with my kids but I’m working on teaching my 5 year old to read she knows all the sounds and identifies letter. I started with phonics as well. Any recommendations for blending the two letter sounds. She’s struggling with blending. Purchased elemental phonics level one. She can say the two sounds but can’t blend.
@YesiIbarra
@YesiIbarra Месяц назад
It takes lots of practice, so patience is key. My suggestion is do it consistently and for short amounts of time so they don’t get overwhelmed. The book I used 100 Lessons teaches how to do this. I first showed them through repetition of different words saying them “slow” then “fast.” (Not reading, just repeating out loud), For example: rrruuunnn (I say it and child repeats) then I say “say it fast” and the child would say “run.” We do this for lots of words and repeat it several times before beginning the lesson on blending 2 or 3 letters. This part took the longest for my child, but once they learn this part, it gets easier for them.

Do you teach them spanish? Did you teach them to read in Spanish too? With my toddler we are doing spanish too then adding english. Thanks for the video
@YesiIbarra
@YesiIbarra Месяц назад
Yes, I made it a point to only speak to them in Spanish until they were 2 years old (because they’ll pick up English around others anyway) and after reading English, then we started to work on reading Spanish. I was surprised at how quickly my child picked up reading Spanish because of already knowing how to speak it.

After you did teach your child to read in 100 lessons, what level did you go to in TGAB LA?
@YesiIbarra
@YesiIbarra Месяц назад
After we finished the 100 lessons book, I used the other books I talked about and the level K mini books in TGAB. When it was time to start Kindergarten formally, we still worked through the level K curriculum books, but I found we had to skip many of the Language Arts level K book (as well as reading cards they provide). Basically I skipped SOME of the language arts level k if I saw she had already mastered it through the 100 Lessons book (and I don’t want to confuse two different methods). Math and writing, however, we worked normally by starting with level K and doing it entirely before moving on to level 1. I hope it helps!

I’ll check the description and add the links if not already there, but if you’re referring to the clear organizer, unfortunately I got that from a yard sale many years ago. I’m not sure what it would be called, but I’ll try and see if I can find it or something similar. It’s nice to have for puzzles or books.

Just so people watching have correct information, The Good And The Beautiful is NOT Christian, the author is Mormon. There is a team of different religious backgrounds helping to write the curriculum so Christians need to be aware and make their own choices if they are comfortable or not using the curriculum.
@YesiIbarra
@YesiIbarra Месяц назад
Oh wow.. 😯 This is news to me. I am surprised because all the info I found about it describes it as Christian, and I haven’t noticed anything conflicting in the lessons. I will definitely have to do more research.
@Scarlettt30
@Scarlettt30 Месяц назад
@@YesiIbarrathe only thing in the curriculum as far as religion goes is that it sometimes mentions God and God’s love. There is no Mormon doctrine or any other denomination’s for that matter. They purposely did this so more than just Christians can enjoy the curriculum. We love it and haven’t found anything that makes me uncomfortable with teaching my children, and I’m a Baptist.
@Akdub7
@Akdub7 Месяц назад
Keep in mind-just because she is Mormon, it doesn’t mean the curriculum is automatically bad/inappropriate. We are Christian (non denom) and have been using it. There is nothing promoting Mormonism. Definitely do research but that’s our experience.
@YesiIbarra

don't use Teach Your Kid to Read In a Hundred Easy Lessons if your kids are dyslexic we did not find out for 2 years and very shortly into book my twins ended every lesson with crying and had to switch back to a phonics based curriculum Hooked On Phonics. may work well with some but not with others it does not teach the letters

@YesiIbarra

Yes, I use phonetics first, and AFTER they are able to read, then we use sight words for the words that do not follow phonetic rules. My daughter called them "funny word practice." 🙂 For me, it was definitely reading FIRST, then the "funny words." Hope that makes sense.
