My mother would make kirimochi for every New Year and we would have it with miso soup. She had that very same machine. That buzzer is so penetrating! This of our first year without her. It was very nostalgic to watch you make it here.
My condolences. I've purchased the kirimochi from Amazon and it's quite tasty as long as it arrives intact. You can honor your Mother still even though it may not be homemade. 🥹💕
Thank you for your kind remarks. Cancer of any kind is a painful thief that steals indiscriminately. It took the lives of both of my parents. All I can say to that is that for the sake of your loved ones DON’T write off ailments as things that will pass when they seem to linger. Get them checked out. Death is inevitable but it doesn’t have to be take down the ones you love.
If anyone wanna try to do this but don't have the Mochi machine, you can use your bread machine/maker. It can also "pound" cooked rice but I think you might need to cook the rice in your rice cooker first because I don't think you can use bread machine to cook rice.
A friend of mine who lived in Japan for a while, taught me how to make a version where you fry the squares of mochi with a bit of soy sauce, maybe a touch of sugar, and sesame oil, and brown it on both sides, and then scoop it into nori. the texture is startlingly like a grilled cheese sandwich. Really good with a few toasted sesame seeds....I now have to make this again XD
I love that for a unitasker it comes with EVERYTHING you need other than the perishable products. I mean just including a rolling pin got me! I have a real pet peeve for products the require me to have an endless supply of other utensils or items just to be able to use the basic function of their item.
@@silentshadow867 It does work with a dough hook, but make sure the quantity of rice you put in does not over-tax your machine. We had to make "mov ci" for my mother's funeral (tons of it) and it started to emit a strange odor. Took a long time for it not to smell when I used it, so it does the job, just be careful.
I'm Hmong. Preparing and eating rice cakes is also a new year tradition for us. A popular preparation for the mochi is to fry it up until golden on the outside and dip into cane sugar syrup! That's my comfort food.
I’ve been in Japan the last few days for a personal vacation, and one of my tour guides was telling me she loves to make Mochi Pizza! It seems like a great yummy concept that I’ve never heard of until speaking with her! She said it was as simple as putting mochi in a pan and after it’s browned, adding topics!
Thanks Emmy, I just tested Covid positive so stuck eating my ozoni alone in a separate room from my family. But watching this video helped cheer me up while eating the tasty savory mochi ❤️ Agemashite omedoto gozaimasu!
💛...my five uncles and one auntie and their spouses (spice?) would get together at this time of year for the mochi making at gramma's place...it was an uber-labor-intensive operation that we all looked forward to... nowadays, even with store-bought mochi, it invokes cherished memories of a bygone era...the rice was steamed over a kettle of boiling water, stoked by an oakwood fire, which was used to roast our wienies after the rice was done... whenever i sense a oak log burning, this is where i go...
Thank you!!!!! I never really understood why in fruits basket kio said that toru would be the kind of girl to choke on her mochi. I thought maybe it was just because she was silly and a little clumsy. Now that you have explained it though, it adds even more depth and understanding to the show.
3:54 Yes, I saw the traditional process several times. The anxiety that the hand ✋️ of the second one got pounded with the mallet is always high. The two persons must have rithm and synchronization ❤🍡👏👏👏
Breadmaker works to knead the rice, My family also eats this with a little honey and it's tasty as well or we pan fry it with the smallest bit of oil and soy/salt.
Knead function should suffice. You will have to watch it though, when the mochi be comes stretchy and the rice grains are no longer visible u are good.
I used to buy a brand of mochi that had a couple of different flavors. My favorite was garlic. The brand is defunct and I miss having a slight garlic flavor in my toasted, seaweed wrapped mochi. Seeing it made this way has me thinking I ought to make my own.
just made mochi for the New Year. I made Kagamochi Japanese alter piece, anko (red bean paste) mochi, and regular mochi. Now where my grandparent came from we made round mochi patties instead of the rectangle mochi. Even had my ozone soup, The way I cook my mochi is in a cast iron frying pan. Love mochi with shoyu and nori strips like you.
I so want to make some not so traditional though. We bought some from the supermarket they where mixed chocolate, vanilla, green tea, black sesame (unusual) mango, strawberry. My 14 yr old loves things about Japan so we got them to try and loved them. The chewy flavour and the cold was and avour is so good. For his birthday he got a bix of mango, lime coconut and melon
It is such a joy to see your demonstrations, Emmy! I learn so much and my wife is delighted about how much I've been able to expand my culinary repertoire.
That must be why I hate those things. My sis sent us some directly from Japan. Tried toasting them and tried the shoyo and nori combo..it was just too flavorless!
We need your home address so we can test your mochi. Not to worry, we are professional mochi testers who must ensure quality control. Really, it’s standard procedure. ;)
Wow it's so cool to see how mochi is made! Mochi has been a mysterious treat for me, since I didn't grow up eating it. Now that I'm an adult, I love learning how to make my favorite foods.
I use kirimochi as a glutefree pizza dough option. I put a few pieces in a oiled pan, fry them until they start to puff, and then I flatten them with a wet wooden spoon so they'll stick together and create a tortilla-sized ring. Then when the bottom gets crispy, I top it with pizza sauce and topping, pops it under the broiler for a while, and boom! Perfect Pizza.
Nami at Just One Cookbook has a RU-vid video where she makes mochi in a stand mixer and yup, it works. Looks a little rustic but seems to work pretty well.
It was always a great day whenever I woke up to fine that my mom had busted out her mochi maker. She always had to make so much because she gave a lot away to her friends.
So glad you mentioned using flour at the end. I bought a bag this past year for a recipe that only used about a 1/4c & didn't know what to do with the rest. Seeing comments that the Kitchenaid works, I'll have to give it a try! Thank you! I love mochi !
I used to buy Grainaissance kirimochi. I was si sad when they stopped producing it. It came in a few flavors, and my fave was the raisin cinnamon. The texture was everything.
Lol! The buzzer sounds like my dryer. 😆 The fact that it only takes 10 minutes to pound the rice into a soft, sticky dough makes that machine worth its weight in gold. 👍🪙 I've made mochi only once and to say it's a laborious process is an understatement. It's delicious and really appreciate how much work went into creating it. 😋 Happy New Year Emmy! 🎆🎉
Every year, my parents ordered our Kiri-mochi and Kagami-mochi at the local Japanese sweets shop, and they deliver late December for the new year. We put up Kagami-mochi in our alters, ate Kiri-mochi in O-zoni, grilled and dipped them in soy sauce and sugar, or cover them with the mixture of soybean powder and sugar (Kinako-mochi). Kiri-mochi with a slice of cheese and Nori wrapping is also delicious. By the middle of January, the exposed mochi get harden much. My grandmother used to make Okaki with them.
We used to get a wonderful large bullet shaped dessert green tea Mochi stuffed with red bean paste and wrapped in a non-edible leaf. It was warm. I eat Mochi “ice cream” but it is kind of a joke. Wish I could find that other type
I used to hate mochi, until I had a mango coconut mochi and I changed my life! I cannot eat beans, aside from the green ones, because of their texture! I like the ones with fruit fillings and I love the sticky texture
I loved eating kirimochi when I was in Japan! Except I went sweet instead of savory XD I would put it on top of a slice of bread (that was slathered in butter and sprinkled with sugar) and put it all in the toaster oven and have that for breakfast!
The sound of that buzzing wasn't pleasant at all when my cat was laying on my chest and freaked out so bad he jumped off of me LOL the mochi does look really good tho!
Happy New Year!! Thank you for all you videos from this year and i look forward to all the videos next year! All the best to and your family in the coming year!!
I have only had mochi once with a bit of ice cream stuff. It was good. I kinda want to make it because I like making things that most people think that they can't make at home, like dark chocolate. I have made that, inspired by Emmy . Sorry if my grammar isn't the best I might be a bit lit.
I learned to bake mochi this way in a private vegetarian cooking class I took with some friends many years ago. It’s delightful dipped in jam! I have only done it with store bought mochi however. The mochi I buy comes in the refrigerator section in a smaller flat slab than you made. You have to cut it yourself.
You mean "I haven't watched anything from you in along time". "I haven't seen anything from you in a long time" implies that there was nothing to see, that she hadn't made any videos lately, which is objectively false.
Happy new year Emmy! Thank you for creating all these cute, yummy and uplifting videos 💗 How I wish I could taste some of your mochi through the screen 😂
What about spreading it out on a wetted board, wetting the top, and rolling it out with a marble roller? It might even be fun to stretch it over a ravioli mold to add the adzuki beans
Can a mochi maker also serve as rice cooker (just using the steam function)? I guess not; it would be nifty but probably @emmymade would have mentioned that.
I've only had mochi treats - daifuku I think they're called. Sesame and red bean are my favorites. I just love the texture! I've had My Mochi ice cream balls before, and only like the coconut flavor - I let it get melty first lol.
I just realized us Thai people call Pad See Ewe noodles because Pad means to stir fry and See Ewe is a really big accent for Shoyu. We are not even realizing it should be Pad Shoyu!
