I pre-ordered Wandering Stars without reading the blurb because There There was so amazing. Really looking forward to its arrival.

I agree that we need fewer beige book covers. There’s an American artist living in England named Sue Kreitzman who says “Don’t wear beige- it might kill you.” I would add, “Don’t read beige books - it might kill you.”

Yeah it is funny, but that would discount The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, which is a great read of this past year. Sorry autistic literal thinking. I guess this was meant to be a joke.

I saw you’d posted a video at 3pm ( Irish time) . I was in the middle of house cleaning but I’ve negotiated myself a tea break to watch. I finished the audio of Tom Lake this morning. My first 5star read of 2024. Wonderful storytelling. It will be made into a movie very soon , I presume. I’m sure it’s already in casting process. It would be a great audio for Joel while he’s travelling.

Joel actually listened to Tom Lake on audio while he was traveling last week! I was so glad he did because we had a great talk about it. I know they’re all a bit too old but I would love Meryl and her daughters to star in a film adaptation.

So many great books! I share your hesitation when first hearing that The Guncle was getting a sequel. Fingers crossed that Stephen Rowling comes through (as he usually does!). I am looking forward to "What Feasts at Night" by T. Kingfisher, "Soldier Sailor" by Claire Kilroy and "Table for Two" by Amor Towles. And of course Tommy Orange and Percival Everett. I too need to read Huck Finn in preparation.
@SupposedlyFun

I have both The Trees and There There in my TBR ASAP pile. I am very excited about James. I should probably re-read Huck Finn first, I haven't read that since I was a child. Release schedules in the US and the UK tend to differ, but there's a book coming out over here in February called Burma Sahib. It's a fictionalised account of George Orwell's years as a colonial policeman in Burma. Maybe it's already out in the US? It was written by Paul Theroux. There are also several non-fiction books coming that I am excited about (but considering that I only read 8-10 non-fiction books per year, they are likely to just stay in my TBR pile for a long while).

As I have come to expect, you have presented an impeccable list of books to look forward to this year. I am very excited to read Wandering Stars, Tommy Orange, Fire, Exit, Morgan Talty and Neighbors and Other Stories, Diane Oliver sounds fascinating. I look forward to hearing you reviews on the selections you read this year. I need to hold a hard line on my purchases but that being said I am anxiously waiting to receive Nothing Ever Just Disappears: Seven Hidden Queer Histories by Diarmuid Hester, Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom by Ilyon Woo and The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History Ned Blackhawk all of which I have preordered from Montana Book Company. Since I have some books I need to finish on audio, I will make up my own book challenge to Finish them February.

I enjoyed seeing your list! I agree Ours sounds and looks intriguing, but I am concerned about the length and the magical bits. I will wait to hear more about it. This video gave me the excuse to go through all my wish lists on various sites, my best of from previous years, etc to come up with a single list of what I’m excited about that I know of so far. There are a lot of crime/thriller books below, which I know aren’t your jam, but I do love them. Thanks for helping me find books I hadn’t realized were coming out! Already preordered: James by Percival Everett and Clear by Carys Davies Will be ordering in some format (no particular order): The Gathering by CJ Tudor, Dancing in the Shadows by Clare Reddaway, The Household by Stacey Halls, Private Rites by Julia Armfield, Mina’s Matchbox by Yoko Ogawa, The Echoes by Evie Wyld, Quickly, While They Still Have Horses by Jan Carson, The Last Word by Elly Griffiths, Ghost Mountain by Ronan Hession, The Betrayal of Thomas True by AJ West, Crow Moon by Suzy Aspley, The Collapsing Wave by Doug Johnstone, Butter by Asako Yuzuki, Time of the Flies by Claudia Pineiro, The Examiner by Janice Hallett, Lights Out by Louise Swanson Just found while doing this exercise: The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley, One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware, The Wilds by Sarah Pearse, Displeasure Island by Alice Bell, The Mercy Chair MW Craven, Ice Town by Will Dean, Burn After Reading by Catherine Ryan Howard, My Good Bright Wolf by Sarah Moss, In Her Shadow by Emma Christie

I'm excited for many of these, so apologies in advance for the long comment! I've read two books from this video! I thought James was a really great book. I'm definitely an Everett fan from the two books of his that I've read - James and The Trees - and need to dip into more of his backlist. I'm also hoping James will be an awards contender because it definitely landed for me, and I think he did some really creative and smart things with the narrative! The other one that I read was Here We Go Again (I got NetGalley access recently too and read it within a day of being given that access!). It was a really great and emotional read! I loved the characters and I loved that they were teachers at their alma mater, because I'm also a teacher at my former high school! I hope you love both of these books too!! I have a copy of Greta & Valdin and grabbed it from my shelf earlier today and read the first chapter and I'm intrigued! Once I get off the internet in a couple minutes, I plan to go read more of it. I saw an ARC of Ours at an indie bookstore and was intimidated by the size, so I chose a different ARC instead to take with my book purchase, but it looks good. I definitely plan to read Wandering Stars - I have to decide if I need to refresh on There, There first. I also will be curious to see how I'd like the Ruffin book with that premise - I read his short story collection a couple of years ago and enjoyed it! And I'm also excited for the Morgan Talty book (I've read Night of the Living Rez and really liked it). I'm sure I'll ask Tin House for a copy at some point! Great video as always, and happy 2024 reading!

I really want to get to The Magnificent Ambersons, So Big, and One of Ours as priorities. I'll probably start with So Big or One of Ours simply because The Magnificent Ambersons is a sequel and I'm having trouble getting a copy of its predecessor right now. I've also been thinking about Elbow Room. And since I started the Rabbit series, I may rip the bandaid off and just try to plow through. But I might not get to any Pulitzer books until February or March. I read A Good Scent From a Strange Mountain a long time ago and remember liking it.

I’m so excited about so many of these! (When I learned about James last summer I actually shrieked in joy. (Had to pause after writing that, to close my eyes and deep breathe, I just got a NYT notification that Trump won Iowa. I mean we knew he was going to, and the other options are no better, but it hurts so much, like a punch to the face, to see the words “Trump Wins.” I have an unrelated question, is Montana Book Company able to tell callers whether you’ve already ordered a book? Another unrelated question (sorry!), can you think of any books appropriate for an adolescent that include nonbinary characters? My 13yo just came out to us last month, and they desperately need those mirrors. I did pick up and read Gender Queer, but it’s a little too explicit for them.
