Proprioception is how we know where our body is in space, and it helps us with movement and predicting where our limbs will end up. However, like any other sense, hallucinations can and do happen that involve the proprioceptive mechanisms, even if those experiences are considered “rare”.
Proprioceptive hallucinations are very real, as wild as they sound, and can be found in many conditions including psychotic disorders like schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
Psychosis is wild. I hope you enjoy this one!

Well this is one more of the things I learned from your channel, thanks so much :) I never had anything similar to this kind of hallucinations but I did have small proprioceptive issue 2 days ago. I was on vacation and wind blew one of our towels that was hanging on a terrace to nearby grape tree. Now normally I could reach from the terrace fence and grab it, however, due to extra Zyprexa fat on my arms, I couldn't reach far enough through the fence, even though proprioceptive-wise thing should work out. But then those last 57 working neurons in my brain got a lucky discharge and I figured I could use a fork to extend my reach and stab the towel gently and pick it up. I felt kinda smart to be honest. Thanks for the video Kit, keep being awesome :)

Hello. New subscriber here. First of all. Thanks for doing what you do. It can be very helpful for other afflicted individuals to 'compare notes'/learning from your experiences. My most notable visual hallucination occured last summer. I had'nt slept in days. Finally after being at the mercy of some sort of invisible force that eletrocuted me every time I lost focus on my breath, I managed to escape my appartment. (This had been going on for days) That's when, out on the streets in the city, all of the traffic lights turned red, and stayed that way. This concerned me a great deal. What the hell was going on? I actually was clearheaded enough that I could observe the surrounding traffic and figure out if the lights were red or green. This was all over the city. Scary experience. Eventually I decided hospitalization was my only real option, so I went. This latest major episode really derailed me, and I have'nt gotten back up on my feet since.

Omg. I had no idea this could be hallucinations. It happens to me occasionally. Especially when I'm lying down. I don't have a psychotic disorder, but I do have bipolar and now that I'm thinking about it it only happens when I'm in a severe mood episode... So weird.

So wierd, I was just talking with my therapist about this today, but i couldn't quite describe it. I told him sometimes it feels like i am skating ir sliding when i am walking. It happened much more in the oast when i was dealing with psychotic episodes, which I haven't been on a break in around six years. Still, however, especially when i have been days without getting enough sleep, i start to feel like i am dissociating and that life feels like a dream, and will feel like my steps are sliding. One night, there was an earthquake when i was standing on a balcony at my apartment about eight years ago, and it felt as though the floor lifted and moved upward, but i thought i hallucinated the whole thing until my ex wife was acting shocked about how crazy the earthquake was. It's weird the more i hear your stories and realize how many symptoms i had that other people were dealing with as well, and that i wasn't just crazy trying to explain what i was experiencing. Thank you, Kit

I'm not sure if I experience these but it makes me think about when sometimes when I lie in bed it feels like I am in a rollercoaster. If I close my eyes I always picture it as if I am floating through space on a bed and making all sorts of twirls and flips. I'm not sure if it is the same. By the way, I would love for you to touch on negative symptoms once! I heard that people with schizoaffective disorder experience those less than people with schizophrenia (not sure how true that is) but I am interested in your experience with it if you have experience with it and otherwise maybe just some info on them :)
@gigahorse1475
@gigahorse1475 Год назад
I love to do that! I don’t think it’s a hallucination, but I can have a very vivid imagination especially when relaxing. I go sledding, driving, floating, etc. Also I do think it’s odd how schizoaffective disorder tends to have a better prognosis than schizophrenia. I would expect it would be the opposite!
@SchizoKitzo
@SchizoKitzo Год назад
Oh wow, that sounds like you have a crazy imagination more than a hallucination but I am not a doctor so I cannot necessarily tell you. As for the negative symptoms part… I do plan to make videos about them, but it’s harder because I don’t have much experience with negative symptoms myself. I get a lack of emotion and motivation when I’m depressed, but it’s due to depression not the schizo. So I would cover it under a depression lens rather than a schizo lens if that makes sense (though the strategies work for both) I understand many struggle with it though, and I’d love to be able to make videos to reach that audience. Thanks for the suggestion regardless! Hope this helps.

This was one of your most interesting videos yet! Thank you for teaching us about proprioception (yay, new word!!!) and how it works. I thought your breakdown of physical proprioceptive issues vs. proprioceptive hallucinations was really informative and clear. And your description of how you experience proprioceptive hallucinations was fascinating. It's really interesting how it feels real enough to make you put your arms out to catch yourself, but also that you know it's not real enough to actually make you stumble and fall. Random question - has this ever happened while you were on a staircase, and if so, does it feel different than when it happens while you're on flat ground? I really appreciate you making these videos and helping all of us learn new things! :)

This sounds very familiar. Kind of like the ground/floor feels like its moving under my feel. Its happened a few times that i can see in my mind now that we talking about it. But its so few and far between that i dont put too much thought into it...but now i am...so much so that i just woke up from a nap with this video in my head. I remenber thinking that it happened once, but it was actualy the littlest earthquake ever. Its interesting to hear about other ppl experiencing what i do tho, but from the completely opposite perspective It might seem wrong theres a part of my mind telling me to consider the potential that perhaps the hallucination itself is actually what it feels like. As in being hypersensitive to barely interceptable shifts in the geography But at the same time, my inside Voice/voices is very protective and doesnt "like" the idea of me believing that i am not functioning exactly how i am supposed to. Which is really strange sometimes when i take my entire life into considerstion, but ive managed to make it work in a way that benefits me.

I had perception issues when I first got my line-less bifocals. I was warned by my doctor that it would happen until my brain adjusted to the fact that it would skip from one kind of vision to the other without the "warning" of the line. The weirdest was tables would look like they were rippling. If I put my hands down I knew it wasn't moving but it always looked like it was. The one that got me is corners would 'sneak up' on me. I walked into a bunch of corners my first two weeks because I kept thinking they were further away and then suddenly I would be hitting them. 😆

Like I’m floating or like my fingers are growing, or like I’m spinning while I’m still.. but not like a dizzy spell, although I get those too.. but my dad has schizophrenia and I’m always wondering if I could have a similar condition because I have delusions and hallucinations but not very frequent.
