When backfilling and compacting trenches, it is recommended do it it in layers. Like: add 4-6 inches of fill - compact it, then repeat! Trying to compact a trench after it is fully filled will most likely not give the desired results. Also, as you found out, running a compactor over mud isn't such a great idea.

Something to consider - using #2 gravel is good for a top coating on your driveway, but to establish a good base, try getting some bankrun- larger stones mixed with sand for a great driveway base. Then top with your #2 unwashed gravel.

Al, you created a hydraulic pumping effect using the compactor over the clay and gravel. Use your tractor and boxblade to spread the gravel and track it in with your excavator. The compactor is more for 2 or 3 inches of gravel on a flatter drained surface; sidewalk, driveway. Good luck, hope it works out for you. Be patient even though you have many irons in the fire. God bless you and your family.

you get it. Its meant for leveling 2-3 inch top before finishing . Totally useless in open ground where large trucks are meant to move around. you need heavy truck, roller to level those areas. can use the tractor and bobcat
@davidjohnston1971
@davidjohnston1971 3 года назад
Would have been smarter to buy a tow behind roller for the tractor. Filled with water it would compact deeper and faster. He hasn't a clue when it comes to spreading and filling. The same swale across the drive as when he started, just added a few inches over the whole thing. Needed to focus on filling the swale and not the two high areas. A roller would help a lot with compacting all his roads, which he won't get down with a plate compactor.

Hi Al, those Predator engines are basically a Honda GX Series Clone. The big difference is the air cleaner and all the sheet metal parts (shroud, recoil, and gas tank). Those engines should always have the gas run dry if they are going to be moved or stored. Turn off the black fuel valve and let itself run the carburetor out of gas…then you have zero problems with the carburetor or gas running into the oil. Hope this helps you….

That plate compactor is meant to be used on one to two inch layers of material. For your drive way the best compacting comes when you track it in with your excavator. Use the excavator Luke, track it in. The plate compactor will be a great tool in the construction of pads and walkways.

@@ride-it-outtimandtoni232 That doesn't make any sense. You can only compact from the top down. You have to place 4-6 inches of material down before you can compact from the top down. Quality of this unit is by far enough for how much I will use it in it's lifetime. Would have been cheaper to rent but having to get and return it wasn't worth the savings. Al, have you ever heard of the technique to keep your gravel driveway's from pot-holing easily? It involves used tires of any size (the tires should have the same tread width); cut the sidewalls off; place tires side by side on the driveway then cover with your gravel. This is a cheap solution that keeps the gravel on the driveways, from constantly creating pot-holes by the weight of vehicles pushing gravel out from under their tires. The imbedded old tires keep the gravel from spreading outward when driven over. This will greatly minimize the number of times you will have to grade the gravel driveway.

Thank you for mentioning this and for doing it kindly!! I do agree with you, I miss what Al says when he's turned away from the camera or standing a distance! I turn volume to max, but if Gina says something it rattles the ear drum...lol!! Maybe he will increase volume when editing or just get a mic!

Great job with the gravel! I would've dug out the wet stuff and replaced it with dry, but that's Florida for ya, looks like it'll dry out fine

My husband and I were wondering why the heck you didn't have that so-called self built cabin shipped up to field and just add on to it? You're getting ready to build another house and you already have something that's built but just needs to be added on to. I suspect that would be a lot faster than building a tiny house from the ground up. To each thine own I guess

I ran Honda engines for 20+ years and came across the predator, it’s sort of a Honda clone some of the parts are Inner changeable, but I’ve run probably 15,000 hours through each one. Great machine. Gina that salad looks amazing, I bet it was yummy.

We purchased a Honda compactor from northern tool and it will not start. Not sure what the deal is but very unhappy.

You might want to look at installing a line of drain tile in that low area…it’ll draw that water away from that lo space and allow you to direct the water to where you want it. I’ve seen this done for farmers and wet/bad draining fields…

Styrofoam makes good float toys on your pond. Just store out of water down algae loves it. That piece you got there, fill with compost to grow crops in. The foam will insulate the roof and protect from from and general cold half full with compost and put seeds in. Cover top with glass or plastic for an extra food frame.

We bought the chepo WEN plate compactor from Menards. Worked well enough for us. About the same price, and slightly higher advertised compaction force.

AL you should have put some road fabric down first, then some larger stone (crushed maybe) especially over that quagmire area to give it more stability and finally the smaller stuff as the top coat to compact, the fabric stops both the larger and smaller stuff, from sinking down through the Quagmire, which is very wasteful and costly and does not solve the problem, I know the fabric is not cheap, but compared to how much stone and top gravel you will keep on having to put down, it works out cheaper in the end.

Al, I've had my HF plate compactor for almost a decade, it's been a great runner and for the money, I don't think you could have gotten anything else any better for the price. I also bought their portable sawmill earlier this year for the same reason, not to mention that every other brand I tried to purchase, had a 4-6 month period, before they could get it shipped. I got mine in 5 days and have been using it for months and if I had bought elsewhere, I would still be waiting for it to arrive. Enjoy seeing you and the content you put out there. It's been a wet year for you so far, not so for us here in the Pacific Northwest. I hope the weather settles down, so you can get everything accomplished before winter storms set in. Can't wait to see the tiny house get underway. Keep up the GREAT work!

Al, get the harbor freight funnels...they are like $.99 You then take that hideous contraption off your gas container and pour what you need into the tank of the gas powered engine, via the funnel. I love my old racing gas cans I purchased from an estate 10 years ago. All metal. No more annoying plastic gas containers. I mark my funnels with oil paint (I literally have an entire art room full of stuff). they are color coded for different liquids, and if they are actually put up correctly, they are on a labeled peg board in their proper location. But I am making my OCD work for me.

Hi Al, another great vlog. Did you use driveway cloth(can't remember name) it's like woven cloth on rolls to stop you loosing stone into to soil and some cloths stop any moisture coming through. Here in UK contractor use it when digging new roads across fields . Looking forward to future vlogs

Good Afternoon, I have a quick suggestion for you. Wherever you open new stuff, leave a gallon sized or larger bag tacked to the wall. put literature in the bag until you get a chance to put it away. Try to get into the habit of writing a date on them right away. I recently put a journal on the wall in the utility room for dates and receipts of repairs and household purchases. I wish I had done it the day I bought the house. I keep a fine point sharpie marker and glue stick in the bag so there's no hunting around.

Vibration makes water come up in this situation the more you go through the more water comes up and contaminâtes good material! The best thing to do is let it dry and come back! Or replace the muddy stuff by god rock! Good luck 👍

I use a small de thatcher (around $30) on the back of my riding mower to level out driveway or lawn (you can put on a few small blocks for added weight) THEN compact a level surface. But then again I buy STONECRETE - it cost more but turns into concrete. My second driveway is rock hard & level...
