Think the title says it all for this one. To give the machine its full title:
The Panasonic Eco Max MC-UG614 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner
I remember seeing these cleaners for sale a few years back and thinking "Ooooh they look funky!" and really wanting to try / own one. But I never did. And then one day this machine appeared in a second hand shop for around £25 so I snapped it up. Must admit I thought these came out earlier than 2013. Was thinking 2005 or so.
I loved the fact it came with its little carry pouch, all the tools, the instruction book and a box of spare bags. If memory serves the box of bags had never even been opened; which after this experience is self explanatory!
The problems with this cleaner are many:
1. Difficult to push (two hands usually required)
2. Difficult to turn on!
3. Impossible to use with the tools
4. Ridiculous height adjuster
It's a shame as it could have been a winner, but the execution of the design is just SO POOR. A very rare failure for the mighty Panasonic who, as I discuss, have produced many fine vacuum cleaners over the past 40 years.
Hope you enjoy the video! Don't forget to comment, like and subscribe as it really helps me out and I appreciate it massively.
If you have experience of this terrible machine please let us know your thoughts in the comments

We had those sold as the Kenmore Progressive Glide here in the US when Sears was still around (RIP Sears and Kmart). I will say it is a pretty novel design with the upper body of a stick vac on a motorized power head pulled straight from one of their canisters at the time, I just hate how you can barely find parts for these anymore, not even bags.

I've got a bit of history with these as well! Sold under the kenmore brand here (made by panasonic until recently), got one as a trade-in when I was working at a vac shop. Looked like it was almost new, and when switched on the brush motor worked great! The suction motor on the other hand.... Turns out the electrical connection in the handle isn't very good (shocker), disassembly and some glue sorted it. I need to check but I could swear mine doesn't twist when upright like yours does, but it still has the tendency to fall forward. My model has a dirt sensor built into the head as well. The powerhead is pretty much identical to those included on kenmore cylinder vacs, I didn't mind it too much. I know that turbo head well, hilariously soft brushes and they hardly spin at all on any vacuum. This might shock you, but even the newest kenmore vacuums, not even made by panasonic anymore, come with the SAME turbo brush!

I feel the same about Panasonic as you do! I am actually an Ex Panasonic dealer. Aslo used Panasonic uprights always sell! But they are a company where they do their best sticking to what works and what they know. They have tried a few oddball's in their history, but they always quickly revert to what has been working for the longest time (the two farces that come to my mind are the AeroBlast, and AreoSpin bagless uprights!). This was offered here in the US under the Kenmore name, as a twin motor stick, or quick vacuum. Not as a full upright. The Powerhead I just the same one that was used on the Panasonic and Kenmore (PowerMate) canisters. As an actual powerhead, they are absolutely decent! Really, they are the same head that had been produced since the early 80s with some improvements. That head was actually a product of Whirlpool, and was sold to Panasonic, when Whirlpool got out if the vacuum cleaner game. So that height adjustment, is a Whirlpool invention. I can see where the flaws are with this deffently. But on the subject of how it reacts to carpet. I mean this with absolutely no disrespect. But it has been said that carpet in the UK is widely different then US carpet. That is most likey part if that reason. Being mainly a US designed machine, it was probably lab tested on the common US found carpets. But again, no excuse for the rest of the flaws! Hope you got all of it out of your system now. Need a drink? LOL

Fascinating information there, thank you for sharing with us. And yes you're totally right about the different carpets in the US / UK - I suspect that has something to do with why this machine is a real struggle to use

They used to be powered by lamb electric motors back in the good days. I really would love to have a vac by Panasonic from 80/90s they are fab. Ps your videos are fantastic and so informative. Stay safe 😇

I remember these as a Kenmore for sears for a very short while like 1 or 2 years and I expect why because of the problems it has tho I don't remember that it came with tools but there was a port for it.
@TheVintageApplianceEmporium
@TheVintageApplianceEmporium 3 года назад
Interesting, I wonder if they didn't bother to make the tools for the Kenmore versions? Would be cool to have a little carry bag with "Kenmore" written on it!

The turbo tool looks like its missing a part from the soleplate, which is usually some form of clip on faceplate that you remove to allow easier access to the turbine, and the fact there is such a large hole showing the turbine wheel through it, is why the turbine wont spin, as it needs a small opening for the airflow to be concentrated through to create the suction to turn the turbine. May be wrong, but thats what it looks like to me. If you noticed, when you put your finger slightly over the inlet port to the turbine, the turbine spun faster - telling me that indeed, there was a part missing that partially closes that inlet port off and makes the brushroll aperture narrower to concentrate the airflow.

The worst I have encountered was a Genie upright that had terrible pickup performance, an awful sounding screechy motor, and the worst part of all was the top part of the bin that created the basic cyclone which would rotate over time and block off the air intake causing it to constantly clog. I honestly think I would prefer this Panasonic over one of those things.

I’ve seen these vacuums and have thought of getting one for fun but the reviews are not so good. The spot where the vacuum connects to the power head seem broken. Shouldn’t it click and stay upright? I think they had a good idea but didn’t follow through.
@TheVintageApplianceEmporium
@TheVintageApplianceEmporium 3 года назад
It does kinda click-in but it seems it's just not strong enough to hold the back body in the upright position :-/

What a ridiculous design what would have made slightly more useable i think would have been if you could remove the floorhead and either carry the main body or lay it on the floor which would have at least made it a little more useful when cleaning above the floor, Thank you for all the great videos i`ve really been enjoying them

Yes, like a carry strap. That would have been much better. The suction / airflow is great too

Definitely one of Panasonic’s flops! Sadly in recent years, Panasonic UK have gone to absolute ruin- the stuff they “make” (or rather, mostly just re-badge cheap Vestel crap) now is not worth bothering with, they’ve never got a single thing in stock, and have totally abandoned all support for their retailers. They won’t be around for much longer- not in the UK at least. I think they will focus solely on their Asian market where they do best.

Thats crazy the way the body to powerhead neck swivel does not lock in the upright position to prevent the body swivelling and thus the machine toppling over sideways. Take the Sebo Felix which uses a similar design, that locks the body when in the upright stored position, and so does the Miele S7, so I cant understand why that Panasonic has not had a swivel lock incorporated in its neck, like the Felix, unless it has, but yours was faulty. The manual which I looked up online says that when using the hose, you are supposed to hold the top of the handle with one hand while using the hose with the other, to prevent toppling, but in fairness, you do that with the Sebo Felix as well. The manual also shows that the stabilisation attachment that slots into the base of the powerhead, actually is supposed to store clipped to the back of the exhaust filter housing : www.manualslib.com/manual/991952/Panasonic-Mc-Ug614.html?page=9#manual If it wasnt for the very poor swivel lock when stood upright its not a bad looking machine - if you are only using it as an uprght carpet sweeper, much like the Lux 500 series, but the tools are far too fiddly, and I cant believe the stabilisation tool - thats just an afterthought I feel when they realised how easy it was to make it topple backwards. Odd machine, and launched in 2011 according to the date on the last page of the manual, so not that old a design.
