Over the past three years I have recommended the DIY Mr. Cool ductless mini split as a viable option for home studios. In this article I am going to explain why I no longer think this is a good option.
1) Three Weeks of No Heat at 4 Degrees
Every once in a while we learn from experience rather than books or videos. This is one of those situations. In theory the DIY Mr. Cool systems are great. They cost about $1200-$1500, you can install them yourself with a few tools, and they can heat and cool a room while staying somewhat quiet. You can always turn them off if they are too loud. Awesome, right? Well here is what happened to me so you can see where things go wrong.
First, this past fall, three years after my mini split install the compressor stopped working. I think this was due to a a power surge hitting the unit and frying the logic board. The lesson here is to add a surge protector to your condenser.
Through this experience I learned that most HVAC technicians have never heard of Mr. Cool and needed to call their tech support line. The tech could never get ahold of tech support. In fact, nothing happened until I emailed Mr. Cool and got involved. After several weeks of back and forth they finally decided to send me a new condenser outside unit free of cost except for the cost to ship it and hire someone to install it.
This was great, minus the three to four weeks I didn’t have any heat in the studio because Mr. Cool’s tech support was not top notch. Then about two to three weeks after installing the new condenser I realized that the mini split was not putting out any hot air.
I called another HVAC tech to come out and just yesterday he said that I had a refrigerant leak in the line set in my double wall system and that the only fix would be to open up the walls.
Well, you can imagine that this is not an ideal scenario, so the lesson learned here is do not put your line set with the refrigerant lines where you cannot access them easily. It would have been best to run the line set on the outside of my studio so that we could easily check for leaks.
This might lead you to wonder how a leak would open up? The HVAC tech said that a screw or nail could tag the line or the vibration of the line itself over time could rub against a sharp edge and open up. This could be what happened to me. We may never know.
So here I am writing this in my studio with an oil based space heater (just to rub salt on the wound my internet is also out and Google Fiber can’t figure out what is wrong). What is the lesson for you in building your own soundproof home recording studio.
2) Ducted Mini Splits Vs. Ductless Mini Splits
There are two types of mini splits and to be honest I am surprised at the the number of HVAC techs, contractors and even architects that don’t know this. The mini split I have is called a ductless mini split, meaning there is a condenser unit outside and a mini split wall or ceiling cassette unit on the inside. The condenser outside is connected with a refrigerant line set that runs to the head unit on the inside of your room.
This system is great for most situations, but it is not great for soundproofing. First, the unit is quiet, but not that quiet. Now that it has not been working I am realizing how noisy it really was. In an ideal world you should not have any mechanical noises in your studio. This means no mini split head and only using solid state hard drives if possible.
The other superior option is to use a ducted mini split. This is a system where the mini split is not attached to the wall or ceiling, but is instead installed in the attic or a separate mechanical room. The mini split unit is an air handler and it pulls air from the room heats or cools it and then pushes it back in the room. Simple right? Well, for a normal room, yes, but for a soundproof room, well it is a different story. More on that install in a second.
So why didn’t I install the ducted mini split in the first place? Great question and...read full blog at www.soundproofyourstudio.com/...

When you hire an experienced HVAC contractor, you pay for the experience and getting it done right the first time. We went with an experienced contractor. After they installed I peppered them with a bunch of questions, and am very glad we went with them. I realized that had I gone DIY, I would have made a ton of mistakes - like the proper sizing, adding the surge suppressor, and most importantly running the lines on the outside! Not to mention that they did the entire install very quickly - it took them just a few days to do the entire house. Had undone it myself it would easily have taken a few days.

Our 4th gen. 24K BTU DIY Mr. Cool began creating floor vibrations, more low-frequency noise similar to pressing on gas of heavy truck 2 months in , and other weird high-frequency noises 3-4 months in (I'm extra sensitive so maybe only I feel the floor vibrations--but the point there they weren't there until after 2 months in--but others can hear the higher-frequency ones). Licensed contractor installed the 4th gen. We had the same unit but likely 3rd gen. at our old house and never had these issues.

DIY is sometimes 15:38 about not being able to find a contractor you can trust more than about saving money unfortunately.

Had a surge as well with my mitsubishi's mini-splits. Yes, plural. Yes, mitsubishi. Granted I had insurance for these but the price of the electronics to repair was almost as much as a new system. Surge protector: good!!! Always use one. A whole house surge protector installed by a pro around $600. They have singles for each outlet (plugging in one item like a subwoofer for example) or can be used with surge protected power strips for plugging in multiple electronics with one outlet. Of course, heavier equipment like your Mr. Cool requires a little better individual surge protector. I'm sure you're frustrated right now but you DID install it well because the thing worked for 3 years! The hind site of having had a surge protector would have kept you in bliss. You did learn to keep lines outside the walls (better for insulation and sound proofing anyway) and to keep the refrigerant lines clean when disconnecting. It was another learning experience and I really doubt having it installed "professionally" would have avoided any of this current hassle (with exception of lines being run through walls). In my mind, you did an excellent job installing the Mr Cool. The lesson learned is to run refrigerant lines on the exterior and always use a surge protector. That's it. Installing a much more expensive mitsubishi may last longer and probably a little quieter but in this situation the result would have been the same. After the dust settles you'll say to yourself "...is it really worth another $1K to hire a pro when I can install that puppy"? 😉

The guy who installed my minisplit made a loop in the drain tube that sloped upward when he installed it so when summer came it couldn't drain the condensation and it just started pouring all the condensation onto the floor instead. He was a subcontractor so I don't know his qualifications. I don't always assume that people with more qualifications will do a better job. They do know more than you, but they also won't necessarily put the time into doing things well, since time is money for them. But if you can find a guy who really takes pride in his work, then that guy is golden.

wow, that blows!!! VERY SORRY that happened!! Clearly, he knew nothing about how drain lines work. I'm installing one myself and I'm very happy i learned the right way to run the drain line.

My 36k unit developed a loud squeal from one of the head units. It's a bearing in the motor. Long story short. Mr cool wants me to pay for shipping for their defective unit. Their customer service is trash 🚮. Once this system fails I'll be installing a senville unit for my home. Already purchased the system and have it in my garage

I had a mini split nightmare last week . Mini split "DYI" is a facade..save a headache and get a HVAC pro to install. Also if you need to refill the frigerant i saved hundreds of dollars by finding a jug on offer up. Techs will mark up the price!

A whole house surge protection device is required on new services per 2020 NEC. I need to install one for my home/studio. Tree branch knocked out my overhead neutral on my service, thus causing a surge. This fried several of my 4” wafer lights. The voltage was spiking up to 160v during the surge. I wish I installed a separate hvac system in my basement studio. It gets hot in there when my 5 piece metal band is jamming. I did install a 400cfm fan recently though. It helped out with removing the heat and co2.

This is a very good video. Please my question is I added refrigerant to my 1hp Samsung spit AC when the power was turned off and I waited 10 hours to put the power on. Is it okay?

I have two questions, if you would've bought the duct system at first, you wouldn't have had to install the other ventilation system? Does the duct system carry both actions of ventilation and air conditioning? Thank you for sharing!
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio 3 месяца назад
No duct systems are a closed system usually. They circulate existing air in a building or house.

What if your ductless minisplit system is connected to your outer wall. Would you still need to run all the extra duct?
