In our last video, we repaired a 1976 Electro-Harmonix Big Muff fuzz guitar pedal. CLICK HERE to see that video: • BIG MUFF WON'T PUT OUT...
During the repair, I decided to go ahead and build a clone of the pedal since I had most of the parts already on hand. That is the subject of today's video. Let's see if my Big Muff clone can match the tone of the original.

You should do a FF topology build, there's a lot you can do with them even just as far as swapping component values and transistors to get some really different sounds out of them and there's basically an infinite number of different mods you can do with them... If you want something to tinker and tune... And the circuit is mainly straightforward 🤷

Hi Brad, transistor's bias is unlike the vacuum tube. You have to do it changing the values of R9 R14. The voltage between Emitter and Base of sillicon transistor should be 0,6-0.7 V. Don't touch the emitter resistor it isn't for bias at all, it is for negative feedback and temperature stability.

Finished working on my DIY Big Muff, had to swap-out all the existing caps cause there was too much bass, not surprising cause all the caps were 3.3uF Bipolar types, I changed them to the proper .1uF and 1uF values where they needed to be, sounds a lot better now.
@dazz5849
@dazz5849 Год назад
I read somewhere that these common emitter stages without a bypass cap (or with emitter degeneration) work always the same irrespective of the transistor used in it. The gain and bias are set by the emitter & collector resistors and don't depend on the transistor at all. Loving your new content, Brad.

Have I dropped though a time-loop to the 1970s? There is nothing subtle about that old bees (or wasps) in a tin can fuzz sound. Would have appreciated you exploring the various settings. Volume where it just starts adding gain through to insanely OTT. Explore the sustain, how long will it feedback to the pickups etc? Brave building this live and allowing us to listen in as you try to suss it all out. Could have been a car-crash but that's entertainment. 👍😎

In the early 1980s I began playing guitar. Scored myself an Ibanez lawsuit Les Paul and a small Barcus Barry amp. Along with this I bought the only distortion pedal I could afford. It was something all the way through the 80s into the 90s all my friends said was a shitty sounding box. But because it was absolute FUZZ I liked it, but always really just wanted the MRX distortion plus. I can’t remember what happened to that Big Muff (or the Little Big Muff?) probably traded it for beer. 80( Now it appears it’s THE coveted distortion box above all. Funny how times change.
