When the soldiers raise their weapons at Maximus and all the gladiators surround him gives me chills. "a good leader has men who will kill for him, a great leader has men who will die for him".

The fact that I have stood where these events have taken place many times in Rome is truly a sight and blessing to behold. I recommend everyone go to the Roman Coliseum at least once in their life, its breath taking!

Hundreds of revenge films have been made, but "Gladiator" is much more than a revenge film. The personal and political agendas of the supporting characters give the story a great deal of depth and complexity. Lucilla, most of all, is caught between her desire for revenge and her terrible fear of losing her son. I would never want to be in her position.

I dunno if it’s just me but that part when Maximus turns around and the sudden contrast in light changes from light to dark. And the focus in those eyes intensifies like a Death stare, that was brilliant. That look Maximus gave is the look of a man driven with pure rage, making Commodus react the way he did-exactly like a man who just witnessed Death staring back at him.

Better security than the Secret Service

A lot of people miss it but Maximus gives Quintus, the head of the Praetorians and his old comrade a salute.

There is something a roman emperor feared most and that is the populace of Rome back then. Some of them did fear the senate but the people they feared the most.

I never get tired of watching Gladiator.

Props to Joaquin Phoenix for bringing to life one of the greatest antagonist performances in cinema history. Everyone who watches this wants this coward to die at some point of this movie.

As iconic as this scene was, I've always wondered how the crowd and the all the other gladiators would be chanting his name when there were no microphones and loudspeakers to announce it for everyone to hear it. 🤔

"Drop your weapons." And nobody drops their weapons until Maximus nods his head. I like that!

That whole scene was pure epic when a hero has won the crowds against an evil emperor, Gladiator is easily my favorite historical epic film like Braveheart, Ben-Hur, and The Ten Commandments!

Epic Reveal!

Word spread fast with this film. Good on the small screen but it was truly brilliant on the big screen when it first came out. Cast was great. Spot on choosing Russell Crowe who did a lot of strong lead roles. His subtle facial expressions worked so well. Connie Nielsen terrific as well. Pretty sure it won best picture and best actor at academy awards and a bunch of others. Huge flick. Love it.

I always comment about the 👍 & 👎 I have read a few papers by history experts that have said that we NOW use those in REVERSE to how they were used in Roman times & that they were NOT commonly used in gladiatorial fights at all. When they were used 👍was bad as it pointed to the heavens meaning they die while 👎was good as it pointed to the earth meaning they live. It is common for words & gestures to change meaning over time in some places while retaining their original meaning in others like in Bulgaria it changed to nodding to say ‘’no’’ & shaking from side to side to say ‘’yes’’. Likely origin, babies when hungry search for milk by moving their heads vertically but decline milk by turning their head from side to side.

I love this movie so much, it is perfect and the fact that there will be a second Gladiator movie, it makes me cringe like nothing ever before.

Scene gives me chills when he turns and reveals himself. My one issue with the scene happens prior to Commodus talking to Maximus. How the hell did Lucius get from the Emperor's Box down to the floor of the Coliseum so fast? Same thing towards the end of the film with Lucilla when she ran to Maximus after he had collapsed. But it's an awesome scene nonetheless.

I still remember watching this in the theater, I was 22. 24 years later and it's still one of the most epic, magnificent movies ever made. There's no way in h*ll that "Gladiator 2" will EVER measure up to this movie. The hip hop music trailer has convinced me of that.

Russell Crowe said in a talk-show that, after Gladiator, he went visiting Rome once. He entered a shop somewhere around the Colisseum or the Via Sacra, I can´t recall. When he came out, the street was fully crowded, everywhere he looked. When he asked a policeman what was going on, he was told: "You are il gladiatore, you are happening!". And suddenly the crowd started to chant; "Massimus, Massimus, Massimus!". It must have been an insane experience....

It's so stupid ! a Roman general from a noble family who becomes a slave without trial because a guy walks by and picks him up after he's injured! Of course ! Ridley Scott makes great films but historical reality is really not his thing!
