I like Brad and Tuck’s look in the pilot and in the series. Although, imo they seem to look younger in the pilot version. As for Jenny I much prefer her look and design in the series rather than in the pilot
Funny story, when I was 8, I didn't watch Nickelodeon a lot, and when I did, it was usually for Rugrats, Blue's Clues and occasionally Doug, SpongeBob or CatDog. I was more focused on Cartoon Network in 2000. One time when I was going through channels on the children's menu, I went to Nickelodeon and happened to stumble upon the My Neighbor Was a Teenage Robot pilot. I remember loving it and being interested in this show, but I didn't get the title, so I didn't know what it was. Three years later when Nickelodeon had become my main channel, I saw this new show called My Life as a Teenage Robot promoted and I was confused. I was thinking "Wasn't this already a show?" I kept wanting to watch it, but something kept distracting me from it, then I finally saw the episode "Ear no Evil." I had discovered Oh Yeah Cartoons on Nicktoons TV since it had moved there by the time, I started watching the main Nickelodeon regularly and saw some of the Fairly OddParents and ChalkZone pilots on there. I started to wonder if My Life as a Teenage Robot started as a pilot on there as well and that was what I remembered from three years prior. I looked at TV Tome's page for Oh Yeah Cartoons, and sure enough, it was. I saw the first episode in Nickelodeon reruns, then I later revisited the original pilot on Oh Yeah Cartoons and I thought it was interesting how different the art styles were.
The original pilot was a teenage girl whose boyfriend was a robot, so it could be that Jenny was simply supposed to be a human girl rather than a robot boy. But I don't know for sure which role she was originally supposed to have, whether girl or robot. It was only when Rob decided to make the teenage girl and the robot the same character that we got Jenny as we know and love her now.
I know Rob renzetti also was a writer and background artist on the Powerpuff girls, another one of my favorite childhood shows. I definitely think he took some inspiration from PPG for MLAATR. Both shows are about superpowered girls fighting crime and have scientist parents. I feel like MLAATR is a more mature version of PPG since it involves teens and teenage issues. PPG does have a lot of adult jokes tho. If there could ever be a crossover of blossom, bubbles and buttercup fighting crime with Jenny I'd love to see that. It'd be cool to see Jenny best up mojo Jojo and Him
It’s hard to believe how far MLAATR has come from just a short pilot, to all of this! I love communities like this, and it’s why MLAATR is a show that I enjoy seeing more of.
My mind was blown today when I found out that Jenny's VA voices Lysithea in Fire Emblem Three Houses. I almost feel ashamed that I didn't notice it after playing Three Houses for over a year now. I'm such a giant MLAATR fan and I can't believe I didn't notice it lol.
Both art styles are good, but I like the pilot art more, even if Jenny's lips look like a chicken beak. I also prefer the pilot's use of machine movement sounds & the mechanical voice.
I saw "It Came From Next Door" well before I saw "My Neighbor Was a Teenage Robot," so perhaps I'm biased, but I like the "official" version best (and as you can see, my profile pic is a cap from it). They clearly tried to make "My Neighbor" look more like a Japanese anime, and though I don't dislike that style, they seemed to not do a good job replicating it and the final product looked sort of crude, not only compared to "It Came" but also to other animated series of the time. (BTW, in "My Neighbor" it says that an asteroid is about to hit the Earth, not a meteor.) "It Came" just looks cleaner, sleeker and more refined. Certainly Jenny looked better for the makeover (not to mention just what an awesome character Jenny is), and one of the things that made me become a fan of the show is the animation style, so if they'd stuck with the style from "My Neighbor" I might not be watching and commenting on these videos today! Another thing I always appreciated is that Jenny, even with the voice filter in "My Neighbor," doesn't have the stereotypical mechanized robot voice, which would've really turned me off. And considering how realistic the voices of various real-life AI assistants (like Alexa, Cortana, and OK Google) sound, it doesn't seem so farfetched that a human robot could sound like that either. (This is also true of robots in other cartoons, like Astro Boy or Rosie on The Jetsons.) Speaking of the Japanese-influenced style of "My Neighbor," one of my relatives who saw the MLAATR with me thought for some time that it was an anime. Knowing about this, the plot of "Speak No Evil," Janice Kawaye's Japanese background, and the supposed effort to reboot the show as an anime, I'd say that's closer to the truth than either of us realized at the time. So while I'm not nearly as enamored with "My Neighbor," I still have to give it credit for helping start a show that has become such an integral part of my own life.
Honest I made a own anime characters robot based to Jenny wakeman (Upload: Oh and I gave it a name: Jendy "egamad" Well the nick name is difficult but it be better only Jendy, I know it sounds like jenny name but add a D in the second N but in Me it could be a alternative reality not a copy )
It's still being worked on, you'd be better off asking the person behind Reanimated on Twitter as I'm a little out of the loop myself. twitter.com/mlaatrreanimate
A shame about Mina & the Count though. The episodes were great. Especially given the success of the Beetlejuice cartoon with an adult zombie man & a young teen girl.
Speaking of this show…. I need to fully watch the whole thing XP Like any other show in my childhood, I only ever watched a few episodes in passing every week, having me only watch possibly a few episodes through the whole series. So I should watch it sometime soon.
I remember when I first saw the original pilot years ago, and I too found it funny how it was basically everything that happened in the first episode of the official series but with slight differences. I like the stylized version of the series I grew up with, but there's a nice charm to the style of the pilot. I just could never get past Brad's voice, however. No offense to Melissa Denton, but I am glad they changed it to Chad Doreck. After years of hearing him play Brad, I realized how I am too used to it, and didn't like his voice much in the pilot episode.
Unsure about why the vid is titled this way, but it’s possible you had a reason I’m not seeing. Good vid going over the pilot, been awhile since I saw it.
When I decided to watch some old Nickelodeon shows, I decided to watch MLAATR, turns out I liked it. I feel like any show I watch I'll love it. Except BreadWinners.. I wanted to like it because I did when I was younger. But yeah one watch of the intro and I didn't like anymore. Anyways, I love MLAATR. I'm hoping to play as Jenny again in Nick All Star Brawl, because the first time I played as her I didn't really know who she was.
All of those potential cartoons and we only got 3, hey at leat they were the best ones. I can't speak for Chalk zone. But the other two are great even though nowadays Fairly Oddparents has had its name dragged through the mud. Teenage Robot probably got it the best of the 3, it is remembered very well, and isn't a joke, like what happens to many series that stay on the air for too long. As I wrote this I can't help but think, why does next to nobody nowadays talk about Chalk zone?
this show was underrated as fuck i liked it as a a teen on nick but never really payed much attention to it since for decades, now as a lvl 34 manchild its great its like astroboy x lexx and zim with some funny nods to other shows
