Does anyone know if they are coming back this year, it was such a short period, when I heard about it in november all the tickets had been sold already

Totoro is my favorite Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli movie, I grew up with the original 1993 English dub of it. I honestly do not know how I feel about this...I keep thinking that some movies just need to be left alone and should only exist in the cinema universe because you just cannot replicate certain aspects of a famous movie on a stage no matter how well it is done. I just am conflicted with this

I think you should give it a go before you decide which version is your favourite 😍

Barbican in London, from October to January. I saw it as an ad in my Instagram stories today.

If were to hear a high-pitched "WooWee!" at the end of Act 1 at the matinee on February 10th 2024, that was me. I loved the show and how it was brought beautifully to life on stage.

In the original, the sisters' names are Satsuki (older sister) and May (younger sister), but in Japanese, Satsuki means May and May means the same thing. Perhaps the sisters' names will be changed to Mary and Jessica.

lmao what? one of the meaning's for satsuki is indeed may, the month, but even with this let's break down your idea is absolutely absurd and founded on incredibly anglocentric inaccuricies. 1) may is the ENGLISH name for the 5th month, and japan's name for month five - the word the native audience would know this name to mean - sounds nothing like ours. gogatsu and mei certainly is not "may and may". 2) the little sister's name is spelled Mei, not May. this name, depending on the kanji, may mean sprout, bright, reliant, garment, ring, or echo. It does not have anything to do etymologically with the 5th calendar month, not in english, not in japanese. though, i will say echo is an interesting one considering the topic of this discussion. this is not difficult information to find. now, i will not pretend to be an expert on this movie. i do not know what the creators intentions were, so perhaps the etymology of the elder and the phonetics of the younger WERE supposed to mirror one another. on pupose. perhaps it was an active choice they made to enhance the story they wished to tell between these sisters. thinking about it, this definitely feels fitting to the story and it's design - for the phonetics and etymology to be linked in this way - especially when you think about the set design of their new house, the fact that it is an amalgamation of japanese and western design, glued together. so i ask you this: what on earth is gained from erasing this to anglicise their names? what does the story gain from two very western names replacing the original japanese ones?
