Several people asked me to make this video... so here it is: An overview of my NES collection and a vignette style retrospective on the Nintendo Entertainment System. NES Review and Retrospective.
In this video I talk about childhood memories, good games, bad games, box art, unlicensed games, trends during the NES era of gaming, games with strange names, sports games, the impact the NES has had on the industry, and much more! I hope you enjoy it.
Here is a link to my video about Game Cases and the Cover Project:

My videos can also be seen on:

In case you're wondering I drew inspiration from many other collection overview videos in my approach to making this video. I wanted to see what worked, what worked less, and what hadn't been covered yet. If you see any similarities to AVGN... you win! He has been an inspiration to many of us on RU-vid and in a way this video is a tribute to him for doing videos right. Here is a link to his NES Collection video:

I would love to see a "Top 20/30/40/50 NES games" by the NESComplex. In my opinion this channel is the most interesting when it comes to gaming because of how diverse the already existing lists are. NESComplex has an opinion and it's definitely worth listening to.

I'm a complete sucker for nostalgia. It's a big reason I collect video games and play them. This video has only managed to make me painfully aware at how small my collection is. Also, that I need to finally start printing covers as well and put my games in the UGCs. It looks like you have more NES games than I have games! Awesome video man!

Thanks. I could've spent hours talking about all my favorites, but i thought this would be more to the point. I'll probably do a Top 20 in a few months.

Wow what a great video. I'm glad you took a different approach to showing off your NES collection. It was both very informative and fun at the same time.

I know. I actually said these were the games that launched the series or thrust them into the main-stream. In the U.S. Metal Gear on the NES did both. Good call though.

Nostalgia is that feeling you get when you think about memories from simpler, more innocent times. Often times toys, games, commercials, songs, and such will bring these feelings about.

Ah, yes, "The Magic of Scheherazade." A friend of my sisters' once had that game. It was a strangely interesting Zelda Clone which incorporates some RPG-style combat at some points.

Scheherazade isn't that obscure a name. She's the queen that staved off being beheaded by the sultan by telling him a different story every night until he fell in love with her. It's from the book One Thousand and One Nights (or Arabian Nights) where stories like Aladdin and Ali Baba (Open sesame!) come from.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I've been under the weather and busy with Christmas. :) Thank you so much! I try to do the best I can and be halfway interesting, but #1? lol Thanks I personally am a big fan of lophatjello (HVGN), HappyConsoleGamer, Classic Game Room, and, of course, the Nerd. As for what games I'm gonna review, Faxanadu and Golgo 13 are next up. I've had several requests for Journey to Silius (a must buy btw). I might do it, but I know HVGN already has so I'm hesitant.
@NESComplex

Thanks James...I spread the games out in the living room. It took about 4 hours to get them all out, film, and put them all away... Tiring as heck, but I haven't seen too many collection videos do that particular shot. I spend a lot of time cleaning my games and usually only buy games with good labels. I'm a perfectionist. I wanted to do some greenscreen like a certain bloke I know and walk amongst my games, but changed my mind at the last minute. Thanks for all the compliments, my friend.
@NESComplex

I make videos about one small aspect of my life (slowly collected over 25 years). This channel does not define me as a person. I spend most of my time being a father, playing with my kids. Most people I know hear me talk about History as I am a history teacher. When I met people from RU-vid in Portland I explained the Lincoln Assassination. lol. Its easy to assume that I'm lost in nostalgia, but I also play music... if I had a channel about that some might say I was obsessed with music.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Yeah.. I thought quite a bit about which direction I wanted to go with this one. I could have spent a few seconds on each game... that is a common approach, but I really wanted to hit the collection from various angles. I sort of did the aerial view thing to make up for the majority of the video being so intimate. I still have some misgivings about the direction I took. Oh well.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 11 лет назад
Haha. My house smells like Bantha Poodoo... and of course i'm infested with flea ridden swamp rats carrying yersenia pestus... then there's the alligator filled moat, bottomless pits, and poison dart boobie traps. My interest in games makes my house pretty hazardous. You might not want to come over after all. lol.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Thanks. I really try to put a lot of my own life into my videos. It is something I really enjoy about Happy Console Gamer's videos and I wish more RU-vidrs would do it... so I decided to do it myself. I think it's kinda like reality TV... if people get to know you there is a deeper connection. I joined YT to make friends and I think that has helped. Thank you for watching.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Good ear and No coincidence. Kevin MacLeod has an excellent collection of royalty free music that he allows anyone to use as long as proper credit is given. This allows me to make better sounding videos and prevents me from getting copyright violations from RU-vid. Gamester81 actually told me about it first and I noticed several RU-vidrs including Captain8bit use the music.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Well thank you, but I either read or heard others say most of what I know. I spent quite a while looking through my games considering the treasures and turds, the games with funny names and those with bad box art. I'm glad you liked it. The response has been so great that I'm thinking of doing a N64 video like this, too.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
I think what always frustrated me was that when you buy a game based on a movie, you want to be able to do the types of things you saw in the movie. The game really didn't remind me of the movie and the fact that I couldn't use a gun really drove me nuts. It's cool that you enjoyed it though. I like some games that other seem to hate... Spy vs Spy comes to mind.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
You are so encouraging. We'll have to talk filming/editing one of these days. Maybe Skype. Every time I watch one of your videos I'm inspired to push myself a bit further in film making. I'd love to pick your brain. I know we chatted a bit in Portland, but I couldn't hear that well in the bars. lol.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
That's probably a good way to approach collecting. My collecting was very organic. I bought what I owned as a kid, then what i remembered laying at friend's houses, then games I had missed... and at that point I bought whatever I saw and didn't have. I mean why not. NES games at the swap meet are usually 3 for $5 or $1 each. It's hard to pass them up.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Sounds like you have an impressive modern collection. I have less than 20 360 games. lol. You got me beat there. I usually get about 5-10 NES games per month and spend only 20-50 bucks per month... over time it really adds up. 10 games per month is 120 games per year and I've been collecting for quite a while. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
@NESComplex

I'm so afraid to open the famicom can of worms. I know there are some great exclusives and interesting games... and those muticolored little games are so adorable. I actually don't have a single famicom game. Would it be possible to one day send you some money and you maybe pick up some colorful english friendly gems for me? Maybe?
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 11 лет назад
I know. An earlier version was released in Japan and Europe I believe on the MSX2 computer. I actually said those games either "got their start or were thrust into the mainstream" on the NES. Metal Gear was definitely thrust into the mainstream on the NES. Good call though. :)
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
I'll probably do one for every system eventually, but my other collections are not quite this big and this video took waaaay longer than I expected. I'll probably do a SNES and N64 sooner than later. I do have a N64 Top 20 in the works though. That'll be pretty soon.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Sorry to inflame your nostalgia disease. I do have a lot, but it took quite a while to build up. I just had to prove that my UGCs weren't empty behind me. lol. It took me all day (well 3-4 hours) to lay those games out, film, and put them away and my son was helping!
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
So glad you were joking. Scared me for a bit. I couldn't believe it either... still can't. But refocus your anger on the gamechasers who found Little Samson and Flinstones in consecutive episodes. It keeps me awake at night. Just kidding, but they do like to rub it in.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Awesome! It's funny.. I have nostalgia for things I didn't experience, too. I know a ton about Pompeii and the Lincoln Assassination... it feels like I was there. Anyway, All I have done is try to get a few games per month. After years of collecting it builds up.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
He has? I guess I haven't watched much of your older stuff. I've basically been watching since CGE and you haven't done many reviews. I attempted using a makeshift slider for the camera and I used a nice black felt cloth with some basic lighting. I spent about $20 and it came out alright.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
You mean sell them? Never... if you mean did I buy them on eBay?... Some, but most of them were from swap meets. I usually spend $1.50 or less per game. Some of them of course cost much more. I did get quite a few from conventions and from viewers of the channel.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
I played that game all the time as a kid. I kept tying to like it... that's what kids do when they have a new game. I didn't realize how bad it was when I was little... I just kept wandering around the camp, confused by what the heck was going on.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
I plan on doing other vids like this for other systems, but I don't have nearly as many games for those systems... lol. I love S.C.A.T. it reminds me of Contra meets section Z or something... scat man? I don't know the reference.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 11 лет назад
Contra, Mega Man 2, Super Mario Bros 3, Legend of Zelda 1, and I honestly can't decide on a 5th game... anything by Nintendo or Capcom will be fun and Konami is pretty solid as well. Life Force, Castlevania 3, Duck Tales...
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 11 лет назад
I have most of them MAX, Advantage, GameGenie, both zappers, top loader, done bones, all manner of little gimmicky things. But I actually don't have 2 of the most iconic nintendo peripherals: ROB or a Power Glove.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Thank you for the kind words. I don't know about new standards, but I was trying to do this video in a different way. People have responded very well to it, so I decided to do a few more. I'm writing the N64 Collection video.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
I keep them in a cardboard box in their original plastic cases. At one point i considered doing DS cases for them, but it would have been a pain to cut them and the cover project didn't have most of my games.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
I didn't take it in a bad way, but I guess I did slightly misunderstand your meaning. Thanks for watching. I want to do an "Is It Fun?" NES game that starts with "E". There are only a few... Any suggestions?
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Dude that would be so awesome! Thank you. I'll have to PM you, bro. Actually, I've always wanted the Super Famicom... I'm so jealous of the sleek design and candy buttons. Does Super Famicom require a Japanese TV, too?
@NESComplex

I know. It's pretty pathetic considering I have an NES complex... I've almost bought them so many times, but end up using the money for games. Maybe I'll finally breakdown and do it at MAGFest.

I found the Sweet Home box art in a Google search but I modified it a bit. I've had to make several that weren't in the cover project database. They are lower quality but good enough for me.

I purposely didn't say, because that number will change and has changed since I started making the video. I currently have about 500, but ask me after MAGFest and it will be significantly higher.
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Sorry. I know how you feel, but I spent about 10 hours on this 7 minute video and the prospect of a little money (and I mean little) helps me justify RU-vid to my wife. Does that make sense?
@NESComplex
@NESComplex 12 лет назад
Thanks. I wanted to do a collection video a little bit differently than I usually see it done. I was trying to just hit the NES from as many angles as I could without overloading it with too many games.
@NESComplex

They are not the worst games in the world, but I was using them mostly to say that licensed games were usually below average to bad. I personally don't care much for either title though.
@NESComplex

I was a late Jackal player, too. I love that game's play style. What a great title. Other adulthood discoveries with fast paced action are Gunsmoke and Guerrilla War. Great games.
