are you relatively always happy? the way you started this video by saying it was raining and choosing a different video to film. i feel like you choose happiness very often, it’s really encouraging
I feel like choice when it comes to mindset is really important. I think it can sometimes seem like very callus wording, as in being happy is as simple as _choosing_ to be happy... but I think choosing to take what every day gives you and make the best out of it is a form of choosing happiness. and if you're really struggling to choose happiness - choose patience and the happiness may soon follow. Idk.. weird rant but I liked this comment and I wanted to share my thoughts.
@@WillemVerb I have the Ricoh R1 as well, my mom found it in her room while packing to move from California to Tennesee a few days ago lol, its very nice but indeed does have a lot of problems unfortunately. There was a roll of Ektachrome in there from when my Grandpa was using it (Around 2000) but since it was turned off for a long time the shutter wouldn’t work unless we opened the back and unfortunately the film was rewinded loaded again by the camera meaning the only way to get it out was to shoot over it. Was pretty sad about that, would’ve loved to see the photos on that roll since my Papa died when I was very young
You can definitely repair and replace a LCD board on Ricoh R1 (and GR1 series for that matter) at repair shops in Taiwan because they still have brandnew boards in stock. I have repaired 3 GR1s (GR1, GR1v, GR21) at 尚品精修相機工作室. You can search it at Facebook and reach out them via messaging. Their service is perfect and brings back your Ricoh back to perfect condition. One more thing. If you want to use "normal" mode on non-working LCD of R1 (and all GR1s), just take out a battery and put it back. It resets all the setting to "normal" mode. Easy and simple and always works.
@@JV.. I'd suggest to avoid fixing Ricoh cameras unless you have a pretty good skill in electric components. Repairing R1 and GR1 series invoives extremely delicate heat welding on LCD board's fxleible wires. R1 and GR1 series are made in Taiwan. For repair in 2022, I would leave it to those who actually made and know the stuff inside out.
I never heard of Mike Slack before! Those polaroid books are crazy! From my experience shooting polaroid, I'm just amazed how much he mastered the medium. Beautiful images indeed.
I shot with my Ricoh R1 for a while and loved it! I got it for $5 at an estate sale, made a bunch of photos and a couple videos with it and then sold it for $150. Crazy how much the price of these is taking off!
BadFlashes recently made a short video going over the button layout for the r1 that’s really convenient. Learning the flash modes sequence is all I need for the r1 :)
I think I owe you for sharing Mike Slack's photography style. Very simple yet beautiful. The photos don't look like there are that many details yet you feel like their complete - nothing more nothing less. You know how they say that you should find your own style. I've already tried different styles like portraits, shadow, landscape, magnum, spi, but nothing is more unique than Mike's style. I really love them and when I saw this video and saw Mike's work, I'm like man that's new. I've always been fascinated with minimalistic art and the fact that I'm a huge pete turner fan. Thank you WIllem for spreading the art of photography and sharing your insight. Please keep making videos like this. It really inspires new photographers
Wanted to jump in and say I grabbed one of the Long Weekend film pouches right after watching your announcement video. Absolutely love it! Way better than using plastic re-sealable bags. Lol
Hi Willem, I have one suggestion for your pouch, which I think should benefit users a lot: make the used side non-transparent. This is for 2 reasons: 1. it's easier to distinguish between "used" and "not used"; 2. you normally only care about how many "unused" rolls that are left. I think most people would like this design change.
If I'd come across Mike Slack selling his books with Polaroid photos, I would have called him a jerk and proceed to buy all the books and have him sign all of them. Such great photos.
Im both equally sad and happy to see the ricoh coming into your channel lolol. I love the Ricoh line and im glad its being appreciated now. But its gone get expensive now ahaha
Do you think you can make a video focusing on the rules of photography (rule of thirds, C shape, etc.)? Would really appreciate that. Thank you Willem!
I sold my mint R1s (working lcd and all) recently. Really good unit but too light for my liking. My phone's even heavier. And the viewfinder is too small too. But the output? They're amazing.
Actually, you can replace that LCD here in China, I did to my R1S.It cost around 30-40 USD, I'm sure they will sell you the spare parts for even lower price.
i don’t know wether it would work or not but I remember seeing a hack where someone used the click part of a long nosed lighter on an lcd and it somehow restored the part of the lcd that fades? Saw it in passing ages ago but could be worth a look
I don’t like Polaroid, I’ve never had any interest in it, and will never use it. But, I think those Polaroid photos are freekin incredible and beautiful! You said it man! He’s mastered the medium.
I had to look up where Mike was from because a few of the images in the books look like they were taken in the town I am from. He's from Indiana, so I can only assume they are
I bought a Ricoh r1 with a working LCD and all functions works fine at around USD150 last year. I was looking for a R1s at the first time. But I didn’t get much chance to film due to the Covid-19 situation in Hong Kong 🥲
I have the ricoh r1. it's great. the lcd does went kaput. i once unknowingly turn on the panorama mode though. all my portrait oriented shots ruined. lol
I bought the r1s a few months ago for the exact same reason. The LCD works but my last roll had some focusing issues, can't tell if it's bc it's broken tho
