Your video took me back 12 years when I bought a C50 frame set and put sram red on it and Michelin tyres 😀. Still my summer bike and love it 😀. No rules 😀
I love your build, but am glad that "COLNAGO" is printed rather subtly. There's no need to shout to the world how awesome your bike is. Those who know, know.
I had to pause this video just to say how much I admire your complete attention to detail the bike looks fantastic best of luck. Now back to the video.
Beautiful bike! I'm glad to see the changes and evolution the frame has experienced since the C64. Kudos to Colnago. That said, a Campy groupset and wheels would be beautiful on this bike. Don't get me wrong, the Ultegra is a solid choice...my first Pinarello had Ultegra...but Campy would be my preference. To David's point, I wish Campy EPS was available at the more affordable Chorus level. Super Record EPS costs more than a divorce. On another point, I would have gone with black bar tape but that's a personal preference. Lastly, I too wish the "Colnago" on the downtube was gloss white...not black.
White bar tape connects the white on the top and bottom of the head tube. Flows into the frame. While matching the colour of bar tape and saddle IS in the rules, the angle of the colour transition makes the black saddle work. Brilliant looking machine. Somebody has got to be able to create a better head unit mount.
Break the rules and build the bike that suits you best. Well done David. FYI - I just had a Basso Diamante built with a campy Ekar and Shamal Carbon Disks.
I often get comments about having Dura Ace not Campag on my Basso. I just love how DA 9100 performs so don't really care what people think. It's my bike 🙌
@@tonyg3091 I've been struggling with justifying DA o a new Pinarello Dogma I'm looking at.... DA saves c280g (depending on cassette size) but adds c£1200... really hard to justify!! The DA cassette is mostly titanium, but this also means it probably wont last as long... So a saving of £1200, plus better durability... the bike shop I am buying from told me going for DA is purely a vanity choice.. It is hard to argue with that!!! ...as for campy...well there is the emotional pull and the aesthetics... if Record EPS was same price as Ultegra Di2, and Super Record same £ as DA... I think far far more people would go for Campag...
I recently rode the Maratona and I was surprised to see such few bikes with Campag. Most of the Pinarello and Colnago bikes had shimano. Personally I was a huge fan of Shimano with their easy to use, budget friendly and easily accessible parts however thats no longer the case. I would certainly consider looking at going to Campag on my next bike. I purchased a new Factor Ostro Vam and after just a thousand km the brakes constantly rub, they make an absolute racket and the chain drops sometimes. For this amount of money it should be a lot better.
-Why you put an Ultegra groupset on that italian frame? 😱😡🤯 -Well, because i wanted to and i have the opportunity to do it! 😎 HELL YESSSSSS David!!! 💪🏻 simple and great answer.
Great choice David , Ultegra is a brilliant groupset , why pay way way more for Campag super and get no more performance. I reckon black bar tape only for the shear hell of keeping it clean but it depends on what it’s made of , as baby wipes work well , but eventually it will still look dirty white . Look forward to seeing you around the Cotswolds, I’m just down the road 👍
I am super tempted to buy one of these. In a different colourway tho-that glossy white/petrol blue/ gold. The matte dark colours get scratched too easily and every scratch on my bike breaks my heart :):) Also, I believe 45/50 mm wide rims would be better looking. For me personally the best look for this frame would be with Bora WTO 45. White tape on this bike here looks awesome. BTW Size 51 Colnago is more 54 than 56, ain't that right?
Carbon grip paste helps for the GoPro-style mounts and extensions. It will help with the computer mount stay in place without you having to over-tighten it
Because Campy is junk. I had Campy chorus on my new C64. It was worse than worn out ten year old 105 on my commuter bike. Swapped for dura ace di2. Game changer.
David, I could not agree more regarding the choice of groupset. I am an Ultegra man as well and would be comfortable with that groupset on any frame. To my surprise; I see the C68 comes in a size "R570" which means there is an Italian option in my frame size 🙂 Additionally, I'm happy to see that not all manufacturer's are on the 'dropped seat stay' bandwagon. Colnago as well as Cervelo with their R5 come to mind. Lastly, I agree that bike aesthetics are always a personal choice and should be left to the individual rider. (within boundaries of 'The Rules', of course), hahaha!
Shimano on an Italian frame isn't bad. Mapei back in the day was sponsored by Colnago and Shimano. They even swept the podium of the 1996 Paris-Roubaix with that combo.
i still remembered back to 200x era,on the menu of DeRosa, the only brand of groupset intalled on those showbikes is Campy. but i dont care those kind of things anymore, cos the beauty of this setup has gone for quite a time, when frames look like allmost the same for the so called "aero" matters.
Absolute stunning bike! I took a C64 for a test drive at a shop a few weeks ago and was blown away but the price with the Campi drivetrain was too much for me to handle. They told me they could build one with Shimano for considerably better price and I'm still thinking about it! Congrats!!
I sold my c60 with full campag super record eps group set for $5000 aud. damn I regret it now, I would have swapped the groupset out putting it on my new , smaller framed C60
Amazing build and agree with white lettering on downtube. You always talk as though you’re normal but you look like a pro! Curious about your diet and mileage. Love your videos!
I have a Colnago AC-R, M10 and V1R so I think only Colnago Riders can really criticize you, but that is just my opinion. My thoughts as far as Ultegra on your bike.. well maybe just change the crank only to Dura Ace. SEEING ULTEGRA really stands out and it looks a little odd or down played. However, you make up for it with White bar tape, Michelin tires and when you put the Enve rims on your C64, forget about it. YOUR Colnago with Enves will be as dapper and smooth as any Colnago with Campagnolo EPS record. I agree with you, I don't like it when the Colnago sticker or decal fades away on a black on black color scheme. Hope to see your next video with the Colnago C64 on Enves rims. Like Snoop Dawg would say "Rollin in my 64 and let me ride." ENJOY your ride it's your bike.
Beautiful. I'll always choose the TCR for value and all-around performer, but this frame looks magnificent. David changing bikes already. It means the channel is doing great. ;-)
Personally I would have had the handle bar tape to match the downtube Italian flag colour of green, red and white. That would be the bit of flash it needs of an Italian thoroughbred.
Hello David. I liked the video, the selected components of the bike(even the white bar tape!) and your notes on bike's aesthetics. However that Italian flag on seat tube is a cacophony on this harmonic ensemble. I mean they 'disappeared' the brand's logo, they lighted up the 'C68' logo and this may be the first understated Colnago, but the 'tricolore' to my eyes does not fit. They could instead add a mini flag near the bottom bracket or whatever... On the other hand, although I am a Sram-mer, Ultegra drivetrain matte grey fits the frame's colors like glove! I wish I had the luck to ride it but thanks to you we all got a glimpse of the feel. Thanks!
Shimano definitely ok on a Colnago. Colnago even has had the C series on the official website featuring Shimano Dura ace. I’ve had ultegra and dura ace mix on my C60 and it looks a works like a dream. Looking forward to more videos on the C68
I always use white Lizard Skin bar wrap with cushion underlayer. So it gets soiled, it indicate I've been riding. However I do not like the one piece bar and stem. Colnago doesn't know what positions I prefer.
Nice video and absolutely beautiful C68 and the Shimano groupset suits it very well, the white bar tape complements the the setup really well. The Michelin Power Cup look awesome.Safe riding.💯💯👌🏻
Lovely bike. I'm a campag man but nothing wrong with ultegra - works really well and goes on easier. Shame Campag discontinued Chorus eps, that's what I ride.
I like the white tape with black saddle, actually. The frame already has a striped pattern and I think it all fits in with that. White saddle and Colnago logo would disrupt that a bit, imo.
While I still think it would have been nice to have had an Italian group set, I can understand your reason for choosing the Shimano Ultegra group set. I have been well impressed with the Di2 speed Ultegra on my bike. As for 170 m/m cranks length, I afraid I can't notice the difference when I swap back to 172.5 m/m on my other bikes. All the bike fitters have been telling us for a while now that we're using cranksets that are too long, so maybe 170 m/m will become the norm ☺
I'd go for a metallic gunmetal grey Colnago logo on this frame - same colour as the stripes on the fork. Gotta agree on Ultegra too. Probably more smooth shifting for a butter smooth frame :). As for the ceramic speed - I'm never gonna be sold on that. Chris King or Cane Creek are pretty much immortal headsets too, as long as you look after them and the whole bike obviously.
I loved my power cup 25s but had some bad luck with the front and side wall cutting them. The side walls seem to extend past the tread cap a fair bit leaving them fairly exposed. They also come up very large for there stated size. My 25s came up just under 29mm on my rims @78psi. Loads of grip though! Run mine with latex tubes and they where mighty fast. Certainly up there the gp 5000 and better in some cases. Lovely bike but I’ll be sticking with my Mason definition I just prefer the look of it for me. For me the c65 is still to shouty, i really love minimal branding these days if I went for a carbon whip it would be the vielo. But I’m sure it’s a lovely ride!
I am rebuilding another C60 after having super record EPs on my first C60 and have decided to do duraace Di for this one as I have ultegra on my Bianchi, and Deore on my Kona sutra and between the three bikes the gearing changeover was a massive headache, making the campag annoying to ride, (as this was my show pony irregular ride). Id rather put my money into some really good tyres, like Mavik cosmics with the cost savings of not going campag. Besides which parts/ repairs are easier here in Sydney Australia
That white bar tape was, imho, the only way to go. Ultegra was definitely the smarter choice vs Super Record EPS… BUT… buying a frame like that is not a sound financial decision to begin with, right? So if you’re gonna go, go all the way! Hehehe
My friend. You put what you want or what you can pay for. I also have a Bianchi (928) with Shimano (6700/7800 mix ) on it. At the end you have to ride and enjoy your bike. Great video btw. 8:10 🤣 becoming more sensitive and getting older
Agreed on colour scheme,David ,the logo needs contrast. I hope there is more colour choices to come. That computer mount does not belong on such a top bike. I remember having a Turbo saddle in white about 27 years ago did not look good when worn a bit.
Notice there's no longer an Ernesto Colnago signature on the frame. This C68 no longer have the seal of approval by the big man itself. Which probably signifies the departure of the brand ownership to the new UAE owners.
Campy is quality though and I'm a die hard Shimano guy mostly but I do have Potenza on a classic frame. The campy carbon cranks are very light and well made.
Well there reason for that is because of Marketing.Shimano pays off these big companies off .Doesn't necessarily mean there better than Campagnolo. My dad has Campagnolo Nuovo Record the components are over 50 years old .still going strong .There reason why Campagnolo is very expensive. They stand behind there quality.
@@patiorio1538 I deal with warranties on a daily basis. There is zero difference between Campag & Shimano in the incidence of failures and nothing in the way the way they deal with them.
@@l.d.t.6327 I have 2 bikes with 35 year old Shimano on them. Both are in perfect mechanical condition. Other than fresh cables and new chains they are all original. Current Campagnolo is no longer lasting than Shimano.
@@ultimobici. You can have old bikes with any groupset, but how many miles have they done? That's the key parameter. We were talking about 80-90s stuff anyway, so the current comparison is not something I am making claims about. 90s campag cassettes, chains and shifters last longer than same era shimano stuff.
You say you want a high end, high calibre computer mount to match the frame... then you put middle of the road groupset on. Both are perfectly functional. Do you see the issue here? (To me, it's not a Shimano v Campagnolo debate, but a debate about matching the components to the frame in terms of "high end.") Big fan, by the way.
@@davidarthur Fair enough. It sounded in the video like you got it working fine in the end but it seemed a bit cheap for the frame. (Still not going to convince me a C68 should have anything other than SR or DA though. 😉)
Yeah works okay but not without over-tightening, my point was just that it lacked a bit of attention to detail I’d expect on such a high end frame. Having your computer droop down on a rough descent is a bit poor Of course you’re free to put DA or SR on your C68 frame 😉
I am putting 12 speed Ultegra on a Cervelo bike. I was told by the bike shop that the 12 speed Ultegra had a problem with shifting if you started shifting gears while not peddling- it will lockup. Yes sometimes I start shifting while not pedaling but only for a slight amount of time. I would like to know if you are having any problems like this. I don’t have the bike yet.
Great video as always! I just received a C68 frame and the new CC01 cockpit but struggling with the computer/light mount as you have outlined. Have you found any mount that may work? The Trek Madone looks like it may work?? Curious if you have tried any others that are better built and more secured..
I have a Pinarello with Super Record, but why have an Italian group set on an Italian bike? Italians don’t insist on it, that’s for sure. Plenty riding their Italian frames with Shimano and Sram. Just ask an Italian
Hi David, great review and I fully agree with you around the groupset choice, I've just upgraded my Bianchi Specialissima to Ultegra Di2 and put a set of Campagnolo WTO 33 wheels on it with Pirelli tubeless tires. Admittedly my bike is rim brake but it is a fair bit lighter, fully built with two cages, garmin mount and Assioma Duo pedals it's 6.7kg. I expected the C68 to be closer to 7kg.
