My new homebrew game for RCA Studio II

My first game for a stationary game console - RCA Sudio II '77 release. It was the second home video game console used ROM cartridges, while it is considered one of the worst consoles of all time. B/W graphics with a resolution of 64x32 in all sixteen officially released games speak for themselves. Although, the maximum resolution can be up to 64x128, which I used. The upper half of the game has a resolution equivalent to 128 vertical dots and the lower half - 64. The game is not finished yet - there are no rival cars, only two tracks and those are not worked out, there is no main menu and transitions between different stages of the game, there is no sound at all and even no name.
The game runs both on an emulator (for example Emma 02 - www.emma02.hobby-site.com/) and, of course, on the original console. The cartridge image and sources can be downloaded here - https: //github.com/azya52/rcastudioii/tree/master/race

Impressive piece of work (Paul Robson, author of S2 Invaders/Berzerk/Asteroid/Pacman/etc.)

Thank you, that's very flattering! I've learned a lot from your work on RCAS2 (and Microvision too).

Thanks for showing this off and supplying the source code. I'm having trouble understanding how to assemble and convert to .st2 files, can I ask what you use to assemble code for the RCA Studio II and do you do anything special for the conversion to .st2?

Hi, I used asmx 2.0 (www.retrotechnology.com/memship/asmx.html) for compilation, and Paul Robson's utilities for preparing st2 (makest2.py and s9tobinary.py which can be found here - github.com/paulscottrobson/studio2-games/tree/master/Games)

@@azya2k Thanks, I think I'm going the right way then, I managed to compile with asmx after understanding the syntax, but couldn't get makest2 to work, I'll take another look at it!

Wow! That's a pretty good implementation of a 3D racing game... much better than I expected it could be, especially concerning the resolution! I'm sure you do a fair bit of trickery there because normally there wouldn't be enough RAM to fit in all the pixels required at this resolution.

Yes, I had to use some tricks. For example, the captions at the top are drawn directly from the ROM, and the "sky" over the mountains does not take up space at all (although the mountains themselves take up a whole quarter of the total RAM).
