If you are going to undertake long commutes, might I make a suggestion. Assume that at least one time when having this job you will get stuck in London either because of weather, transportation accidents, industrial action, or other unforeseen circumstances. The point is to have a plan ahead of time. Where you might stay nearby, having what you would need that cannot be easily obtained, etc. If you get a dog in Cambridge, who would walk it. If you have someone in London who could put you up and lives close enough from work, store a backup bag there. They might let you stay and sleep overnight at work but would you really want to? Better remain in London in some comfort rather than hours in discomfort in a station or train.

I really enjoy you talking about being a young professional- not a lot of people talk about it on the internet , but its so so important to talk about it and get different views! Being a young professional too (different industries tho, i work in publishing), this is really inspiring 🥰

Congratulations - it all sounds great! Lots of wisdom on interviews there - particularly that it's a two way thing and you need to be sure it's the right company for you. Can't wait to hear how commuting works out for you - I wonder if the company is flexible enough for you to avoid the rush hour? I remember being surprised back in the 80s visiting a customer in London that the first train out of Cambridge at something like 6am was packed!

I respect you, and other young professionals like you, so much for working hard in a certain domain. As they say, there's no shortcut to self made glory. Thank you for inspiring me for the majority of my med school journey, I'm now in my last year and your past & current videos still help a lot with motivation 🤗 Sending love from Romania 🤍

I really have no idea how you managed to do all this, exams, job applications,new house etc. Amazing to be able to juggle all this at the same time. I agree experience earlier is better as then you’ll know the areas you’d like to specialise in later on (if relevant).

I read an article years ago on LinkedIn that said if you don't change jobs every 2 to 3 years by the time you retire you will have left half your potential salary on the table. HR departments are still locked into the 1980's, there is always money for new hires but not for retention.

I did the Cambs-Ldn commute for 6 months a while back. It's madness on the trains during rush hours . 🙃 But I always enjoyed it. I would cycle to the train station and then fold my bike, take it with me on the train, then cycle from Kings Cross to Kensington H.S in London. Good memories! Have a blast!!

Hello Paige! Congratulations on your new job! I can totally relate to the insanity of having job interviews and exams at the same time as I did the same when I was doing a part-time MSc (pharmaceutical sciences) while working full time in a biotechnology company. I did time it to be this way though... because of the bonuses like what you mentioned in the video haha! 15 percent is just too much for me to consider giving up!

The two way street comment is very valid and an important point ! Getting qualified in a profession for the reasons that it pays very well and has long term stable employment is sensible. The one asking you to recite memorised market numbers sounds like an uncreative narrow environment. The smaller team sounds like a good choice for learning and broader experience. You're only going to be more employable to your old employer in the future with more experience and training so everyone wins really.

You were at Jesus when I first discovered your videos on RU-vid about 4 (maybe 5?) years ago. A change of jobs can be a MAJOR change in one's life. I'm absolutely certain the job recruiter would have been DELIGHTED to have been contacted by such a well qualified young professional as you. I am now out of the jobs market, thank goodness but you've got decades left... Good Luck to you, in all that you do. (And please keep the videos flowing).

I had to laugh when you talked about dress codes because I remember my own worries about it. What I’ve learned is it’s never as strict as it seems and it’s best to just follow your colleagues‘ example. Anyway. I’m very happily employed at the moment but I really appreciate you taking us along on your career journey. No matter which field we’re in I think there are topics which are crucial for all of us (breadth of experience vs stability, salary & development vs work-life-balance etc) and lots of lessons to be had. All the best!

Just to point out, not all recruiters are like this. I have dealt with one that was so pushy to get me into the job, because it would get him commission, that I almost made the wrong decision for myself. He was pushing me so much and dissing my current company, to make me move, and I started doubting myself and my instincts. He did not care at all about what I needed or wanted. I pulled out after I accepted the offer from the other company, and there was radio silence from him since.

Excellent news about your job. I have had a case where I attended online an interview, and when they came to my rejection letter, they got my name wrong. I am qualified as a lab chemist (at both BSc and MSc levels) and due to being a sort of carer, I am restricted to my own area. Get rejected all the time. Started a placement at CAB and I have an interview with them in the office I worked in. It's the best of the best and when you have a learning difficulty/disability which hampers your performance in exams, employers tend to ignore you for the low marks as a result of the difficulties. Argggghhhhhhh. I am studying counselling and enjoying i more myself, so swings and roundabouts

Jobs in London pay more but you have to factor in the cost of the commute (both the rail pass and the mental / physical cost of commuting) Will you be able to continue with rowing club now? Don’t let go of your physical fitness! People don’t understand how long commutes within London can be! Up to an hour on Tube - so you might as well live outside of London, have a better living environment and commute on a comfortable train
@PaigeY
@PaigeY Год назад
Very true, recruiting can be exhausting and expensive! Yes luckily I can continue with my boat club activities in the 5 days a week that I’m not in London. And physical fitness is all accounted for by my cycle to the station 😅

I've been thinking on what to do next and the one thing that I keep coming back to is that I'd love to study astrophysics. Is there any path you'd recommend me to follow in order to enter this area of studies? Maybe studying natural sciences or any other path that you know of (e.g., one that your friends chose). I've been watching your content since you were in your second year of uni and so glad to see you excited for this new chapter of your life. However, I suggest 10% percent put away for saving. (I am sure you already save). Find a charity that you like and set up a monthly giving. Or a one of fund to the university. Enjoy the rest of your salary. 💃 'O yes don't forget to pay your bills.'🙂
