BTW: For the folks reading this comment. Printing really is amazing, and so is this enlarger. It is relatively cheap, but it is new, and ready for the modern age. I can assure you your prints will look a thousand times more awesome if you print them. So give it a try. :)

I've put pieces of glow in the dark stickers and wrote the letters of the button on the stickers so I can read them better in the dark. That's helped a ton. I'm a big fan of that enlarger!

tip that has helped me! try to increase the time by changing the apeture on your enlarger lens. 1 second of exposure makes it tough to make dodging/burning adjustments. so i try to aim for a 5-10 second exposure that way i can dodge and burn more accurately. love the print though!!

I found a used 4x5 omega enlarger at a great price and then realized I couldn’t fit it in my bathroom. I bought the intrepid 4x5 enlarger and it is absolutely minuscule by comparison. I love the thing. That said their compact enlarger is even smaller. Great for small spaces as you’ve said. I love that Intrepid is so invested in the darkroom side of things too

As a (mostly) digital photographer, I love seeing film photographers working in the dark room, it's such a cool process that I don't get to experience, but with videos like these, I get to live vicariously through you ;)

On mine I've switched the focusing knob around to the top (just unscrew it all the way out and turn the unit around). Also, the firmware update gives you the option of using a red light for focusing instead of the white, which saves accidentally wasting paper (though I find it harder to focus, crap eyesight). I think I'm going to stick a little rubber something on the run button so make it easier to tell it by touch.

i have also been doing some RA4 printing and I have been thoroughly enjoying it. There's just something different seeing a negative being enlarged to 8x10 (and bigger), using the colour filters and fine tuning the exposures, it is like taking the same photo for the second time. The results are fantastic too, much different (if not better) experience then just scanning and seeing the image on the screen. The colours, "gains" on prints are quite different from scans, and very pleasing to the eyes!

I love the smell of D-76 in the morning...it smells like....well...D-76. Nothing like seeing an image come to life in the development tray. Yes it's smelly, messy, and can cause relationship troubles in a one bathroom home, but it sure is worth it. Keep on printing man!

When I was looking at darkroom solutions for my small apartment the Intrepid kit was absolutely in the running. However, one night I put a $5 bid down on a full Beseler 4x5 enlarger with a color head and won, whoops. Oh well, now I'm a happy little cookie monster. This thing takes up half the hallway. Best of luck with the setup and happy printing.

I need to do more printing but god I love it so much. The only problem is I easily lose time in there and end up exhausted after spending 2 or 3 hours on 1 print haha...Agree with the buttons on the controller. They aren't the best lol. I have the Intrepid converter kit which I think is mostly similar. My only real problem with using that converter kit is that it can be annoying to get the 4x5 camera level in the right ways at least with the older generation intrepid. Been a while since I have used mine though since I got a dedicated enlarger ...or two (if you think this copy stand is big...well wait till you see how big enlargers that can do large format prints get......I am a fool for cookies I will almost never eat.) Stray tip: If you get the Intrepid Enlarger Converter Kit, you can print your 4x5 negatives too!! Tip 2: If you are like me and have a spare room along with your washroom, you can try what I have: Have a dry dedicated darkroom then shepherd your print to the washroom in a dark box. That way you can keep the enlarger installed all the time and only pull out the trays in the washroom (where there is water access) when needed. It is annoying but so far has worked for me...i just live in constant fear of the bright street light across the hallway. I have been meaning to print enough to start an etsy page...someday...maybe i will recoup 0.00000000000000000000000000001% of the cost of setting it all up and doing a print.

Working in a darkroom is so much fun. Want to go back to take another film class just so I have access to it whenever I want.

If you want 8x10 for the cost of 5x7 Multitone has some pretty good paper and it's carried by B&H. The only trade-off is its gades 1-4 so technically not as dark of blacks as Ilford but good enough for most prints and you can always do one last print on Ilford paper if you think it really needs the extra punch in the blacks.

You mentioned going to Freestyle for paper. I'm in Indiana and years ago I mailed them an order, dropping it off at the post office on Saturday morning, regular mail. They sent an email acknowledging the order on Monday and the package arrived on Thursday. Given the traffic out there, I may have gotten my stuff before you did. 😊

Change a button's texture by adding (florescent) gaffer tape on it. Then you can feel the difference in the dark. Or go nuts and use model glue to add different things.

Can you please explain how you attached a tripod head to the Beseler enlarger? I am planning to turn my Beseler enlarger into a copy stand for film scanning. Thanks

I agree that this has only 1 focus tab which isn’t that great. My meopta has a micro focusing knob so I can fine tune. Guess I need to use it more often than my meopta.

I don’t miss the chemicals but dam I do miss the magical appearing of your image on the photo paper. I used to have a darkroom in a shed at my parents house 20 years ago. It was pretty amazing. I still haven’t enlarger. I have dismantled it now and use it as a copy stand in my studio.

It’s definitely good that you can poop in there still, ha! That church print is lovely. Did you just burn in the edges to make the frame? You may or may not know this but going for longer exposure times gives you some extra fine tuning ability since you have a wider gamut of time to play with giving you time to place your dosing and burning tools, etc.

I’ve not done darkroom work myself, so take this with a grain of salt, but at 3:00 it seems line you didn’t mask around your neg. I think you are supposed to for light control and to improve contrast. You might want to check if that is the case. Have fun printing!!

Mask the negative in holder. Ambient light will lower your contrast

Nice to see new manufactured enlargers but to be honest this thing seams to be a pain in the ass to work with… first you need a support, I don’t see the point on mounting it on an enlarger chassis just use this enlarger then 😂, a copy stand cost almost the same price than a used enlarger so same can’t see the point, so use a tripod but in this case it’s just a pity to set cause you need to be really level and perpendicular to not alter the perspective… with that said, don’t get me wrong I really like intrepid, they try their best to provide us new products 😊

I really appreciate the Chekov’s waffles. If there is a loaded waffle mentioned in the intro to a video, then in the second or third act the video’s author ought to get to eat it. Do people talk about loaded waffles, or is that just baked potatoes? It would be easier to paraphrase Chekhov if there had been baked potatoes in the video. Man, now I kind of want baked potatoes.
