You're so fun to watch Mary, such a innocent kind soul,, I hope you are always blessed and protected as you journey through life bringing beautiful music to all of us out here. Wish I had never sold or basically given away any of my gear In my 68 years of playing guitar, good grief, I would basically have a guitar store full of equipment. But I'm happy now with what I do have , I pretty much now consider myself an unsupervised adult LOL, so there's no one around me now to say no. Stay blessed and may your sweet spirit always be bubbling with life, may all your journeys Mary be made prosperous And full of memories you will one day sit and relive. There is a kindness in your eyes that is very real and your voice is like a gentle whisper that draws others close to listen.
A BIG Orange fan I see, Yes Orange has a great tone. I'm more of a fetch for old vintage finds myself. That original sound that came out of the amps of the 60s and early 70s. Something about the " this is the way it sounded in the 60s" thing I guess sits well with me. Ampeg Reverberocket, is one good classic..
Hi Mary. I've been playing guitar on the Arlissa videos if you know who I'm talking about. I'm a producer / guitar player based in NYC. I have downsized from a giant pedal board to a Pedaltrain Nano as well. I have 5 pedals on mine. I sort of rotate them as I do different sorts of gigs, and I do admit I cheat and have some pedals off the pedal board as well. I use a Zoom MS 50 G as well when I need multi sounds. It's got 172 pedal and amp emulations. It's an amazingly good pedal for it's price. I love your music and would like to chat more with you about it.
I ve got the soul pedal. I ve been considering the turnip greens pedal for the last 6 months. I m on the fence about it. I do like the tones of those who play them on the tube. It carries a bit of a attained history as being in the same type of effect of the klon centaur pedals. sort of. so now its time to try one for sure. thanks for the heads up on the pedals. being a pedal enthusiast of late, I ve moved away from the all in one multi effects pedals. Something I think long term players do repeatedly trying to attain great tone both rhythm and lead ...albeit. Lead does not have the same pazzaz it was in the previous decades. Or so it seems from east texas. re echo ........ mildly curious. One of the great thing about active tubers great heads up on gear from many perspectives. thanks
Deep respect to any guitarist who is happy to twiddle the knobs on their pedals. That's someone who can find good tone quickly and doesn't have to panic just because someone changed the settings. PS...to make your life easier, when you put the Velcro on the pedalboard, just run it the entire length of the board. Saves a lot of fiddling and lets you swap for different size pedals without having to re-Velcro the board :)
Very sensible set up, sounds great too. Mine is.......not sensible. Or at least to anyone but me. I love timbres, the more the merrier. And I don't want to sound like anyone else, as far as that is possible. In order from guitar to amp: Cheap Dynacomp clone compressor. Loopi Pedals effects order switcher. EHX SuperEgo. Mooer Slow Engine. (A Boss Slow Gear clone.) EHX Chill Switch. (The Loopi pedal moves these three from before the rest of the pedals to after. Sometimes I want the sound the SuperEgo is outputting to not be effected. ) One Control Blender pedal. (Allows me to change from fully dry to fully effected using an expression pedal. I also have an expression pedal that I cobbled together out of a bike's rear hub. It has numbers on it that allow me to set the blend exactly without having to hear it. Useful when I change sound between loops. The regular treadle style pedal plugs into it for swells and suchlike.) Boss OC3 Octave pedal. Boss MO2. (The poor person's polyphonic octave generator.) Digitech iStomp. (Mostly used on the Dirty Robot and Gonkulator patches. ) Dunlop Q535 Wah. EHX Knockout. (A very guitar specific two band high pass, low pass eq.) Bugbrand DIY sample rate reducer. Boss OD3. (With the c9 mod as well as two of the clipping diodes replaced. One with an ultraviolet LED and the other with an infrared LED.... just cause I could. (I did mention a lack of sensibility didn't I?) 😀) MXR Stereo Chorus. Caline Snakebite reverb. Roland volume pedal. Boss RC300 Loop Station. All these are controlled by a Joyo PLX8 switcher that I've added foot switches to so I can reprogram the banks without bending over. Not a single delay or tremolo in the lot. I've arbitrarily decided that because the looper is automating a lot of the music I do that I wouldn't have anything besides the SuperEgo that plays on its own, if that makes sense... no, it doesn't to me either. But there you are... All this is mounted on a dodgy two part, two layer board I built out of scrap MDF. One of the great things about being past any kind of professional ambitions is that you can get away with gear that is so un-roadworthy that it barely survives the 100 metre trip to the local for its open stage. It's the simple things in life...
Give dual delay a try with the Slow Engine. Adds a long, long ambiental tail that doesn't have the quality of repeated notes, just a lush pad that trails out gradually.
Laugh it up guitar lady, England is the only place that has worse residential heating and insulation than Australia. :) Mind you, my practice space is a literal shed without the benefit of either of those things. I'm ashamed to admit I didn't try out Martin's excellent suggestion last night. It was 7c out and staying snuggled in my daughter's bed after story time seemed more sensible. I'm beginning to fear that living here has made me so weak that if I ever went back to my birthplace in Canada the wolves would cull me as soon as I stepped off the plane.
I'm a busker and like to perform year-round, so I know a thing or two about playing in the cold. Hiking underclothes are a great way to keep warm. I mean stuff like polyester or wool long-sleeved shirts and long johns. If you keep your core warm, your body won't reduce circulation to your fingers and you can play pretty much unhindered in up to -5° C or so. I suppose getting wool shouldn't be too hard in your neck of the woods. :)
Love your easy style of playing! Very smooth and you don't overdo it like guys trying to prove something lol. Glad I clicked! Music was worth it's! That accent too 😵😇.
I recently “discovered” your channel and I really like your down to earth way of discussing your subjects. I recently started learning to play guitar and I enjoy listening to you talk about your music journey. As someone who is starting a guitar journey so late in life I know I will never get to do anything like what you or Rhett S are doing, but it’s great to go along with you guys on your trip!
Nice neat little board, sounds cool too. Careful though, once you catch PAS (pedal acquisition syndrome) you'll end up with a board like mine; Diago Showman, with 14 pedals on it! It's a sickness I know... ;)
Hi, Great video. Forgive me if you said in your video (but i didn't hear)... what is the reasoning for the pedal placement being not in the order of the signal path, i.e. from the compressor to the drive and then back to the delay?
I hope I get your question, but because of the layout of the pedals, the input is usually on the right, output is on the left, so I have to start the signal path from right to left... fingers crossed that makes sense and helps you!
If I may make a suggestion, I would try the TC Electronic Polytune instead of the Boss tuner. The Polytune allows for you to tune all of the strings at once, allowing you to tune much faster. It is the same price as the Boss, and the newer model has an analog buffer pedal built in.
Great video! I was about to go to sleep cause it's like 3:30 am and I got the notification haha. I've been wanting to build a pedalboard from some time now but I still haven't decided 100 percent what I need and don't need on it especially since I don't play live or anything I just play for fun.
2:40 video editing tip: add some background to contrast more and make the text more readable (don't take this as a negative comment, but as a constructive one to help you)
Hey Mary, have you heard of the Strymon Ojai Power Supply? It has 5 slots and very tiny. According to their site, it can be mounted underneath the the Pedaltrain Nano+ with a small modification to the leg bits. $150 USD for 5 spaces of fully isolated power.
You have an interesting style of playing which is very refreshing after constantly hearing blues players noodling pentatonic scales up and down the fretboard!
Nice playing, and I admire your simple set-up. In my quest to try and cover any sound that exists (impossible), my pedal chain has expanded to 14. Now I actually wish my set-up was simpler, but once you have the pedals, it's hard to get rid of any (and I do use most of them regularly)! Using fewer, I think, makes it more possible to create your "signature sound", and yours is beautiful.
this is all you need really. When having too many pedals it just becomes cumbersome and u spend too much time looking down instead if enjoying what you play....
Pedaltrain makes a rechargeable power supply that fits perfectly under the nano and nano+ boards. Nothing wrong with daisy chaining the pedals but, it can create unwanted noise since the onespot is not isolated power.
Incompatible pedals sharing a ground lead is an often source of hum and noise in a signal chain. When shopping for power supplies, it's a good to keep in mind that many cheaper brands claim that the separate power leads are isolated when they really not. They just isolate the positive leads, but all the leads share a common ground, so they're only marginally better than a daisy chain. This is true for virtually every budget-priced power supply that is powered from a wall-wart. (Vitoos DC-8 being the sole exception)
Hi Mary Why didn't you daisy chain the 9v output from your TU3 for your pedals? I have 6 pedals that I run off mine fed by a Boss 9v supply? Works a treat and little noise. Tony - France
Hi Mary, Try it, might be less noise! Something I found out today that Boss Pedals also have a buffer in them that can boost the signal path particularly when you have long cable runs! They say that Wah Wah and Distortion Pedals are the biggest drain so I am going to experiment with my tuner in line after these pedals! It'll make a change from scales practice! Have Fun. - Tony
I've always asked myself, if I were to break down my board to the essentials to get my sound, which pedals would I keep and which would I leave out? I feel like your build is perfect. If I had to add more, I would probably add the Xotic Wah, considering the size and versatility of the pedal. That being said, this is an awesome rig! Definitely a no-nonsense build, as all builds should be.
The Turnip Greens has an effects loop within itself? What is the advantage of that vs the delay before or after? (I tried searching your vids for an example but didn't see anything obvious). But nice video and playing!
Because the Turnip Greens is two effects in one box, the loop lets you insert other effects into your signal chain between the Soul Food section and the Holy Grail. So in this case…delay after drive/gain and before reverb.
Since you don't have something like a Pedal Power, I might recommend something like an ifi-ipower. it is way quieter, I had the one spot and it is a very noisy digital power supply. It might get rid of some of the buzz and hum you have. when you use the onespot with high gain at all it really is quite noisy.
Hello! Not sure if anyone already mentioned, but Truetone makes a CS6 small power “brick” that is designed to fit under the Pedalboard Nano, Nano+, Metro, etc. without any modifications to the board. They sound great and get great reviews. Thanks for the excellent video!
If you were to add an additional pedal I think some sort of modulation effect. For simplicity sake I would recommend a simple one knob phaser they are a bit more subtle than chorus or flanger effects. a nice MXR Phase 90 or I have a DOD Phasor 201. You can go crazy with all the pedals out there particularly some of the elctro harmonix stuff.
In case anyone thinks that there is "absolutely no space for it" regarding proper power supply for a Pedaltrain Nano board, I'd like to point out that it's actually not true. There's a whole bunch of power supplies that actually fit underneath the Nano: Cioks Adam, Cioks DC-5, The GigRig Isolator, Pedaltrain Volto and Pedaltrain Spark, just to name a few of them.
Your pedalboard looks great. What amp are you using? I have EHX Soul Food as my main overdrive and I use Eleven rack. I've noticed that it sounds best when using gain staging ie. having overdrive coming from Eleven Rack as well. And another question, which Yamaha monitors are you using?
hi mary! nice and cool small pedalboard setup u got there! i just started watching your videos and you are one hell of a player.. and very beautiful lady too! you got yourself a new fan/subscriber! looking forward to watch more of your vids
My pedal board budget is nowhere near as much as that sadly. I became a "Cheap Charlie" after relocating to another country and playing music for a living, which earns me less money than I have ever earned, but makes me happy. However the amount I've spent/lost flipping cheap pedals over the last few years probably put my budget over £500 to be honest.
Great TT as always, cool pedal board too, nice n neat. I use a boss DD-20 Giga Delay, And a boss RC-20XL phrase recorder, Loop Station. Interested In your boss tuner, plus Turnip Greens 👍🏼. Can I ask, what gauge strings you prefer?
Nice little VT, succinct and to the point; I like the point that a female is doing this - please! Don't jump down on me! I mean this by way of most are by guys, there's that whole male thing going on and this can could put some ladies off or distract them from the whole process. Long may you continue to keep posting; I teach music, drums and guitar mostly but some bass and theory so it's good to see others doing great VT's and if i get a lady who wants some advice I could think, hmm...i know the place to send you for more info.
One thing I'd like to add is that there are daisy chains available that have right angle plugs. They don't stick out as far as the straight plugs do. I got mine from the company that makes the PowerAll plug.
WHY a tuner? No on board guitar tuner? I'm getting a TC Helicon play acoustic...it has a tuner, body rez for guitar, harmonies, reverb, looper chorus...all in one! My guitar has built in tuner. Wouldnt this be an easier, less confusing and less equipment setup??🤔
Nice Setup Mary. I have the same setup for when I travel on a Small pedal train. I use an AX8 and pedals for the bigger stuff but whenever I have to carry stuff either on planes or whatever a small board like yours is ideal,
I would also try compressor after overdrive. It won't make up for user error like it does in front, but it will make the overdrive sound bigger, fuller, and "cleaner."
Hey Mary, great little board! did you change any of the settings on the 2 mini thumb wheels inside the compressor or leave them in them in the 'factory' default position?
Nice rig, super clean too. I'm interested in your delay. It sounds like butter. Do you talk about the Vigier guitars you play? I love the Les Paul looking body, I think it was mint green or baby blue. 7:13 single notes crazy good!!!!
Hi Mary. Great videos, lovely playing! Subbed yesterday then today you pop up on my Andertons notifications :) Look forward to seeing you work with them!
I have a downright, stupid pedal collection. They all have thier merits. However, recently I've come across. Rowan "Twin Looper" it's inexpensive & it will manipulate speed as well as play in reverse. Nifty effect. Check it out. Love your music. Good on you! Keep Rockin! 🎸
I really enjoy your videos... you are talented..unique sound and feel... and unpretentious. ♪♪ I've tried many different compression pedals....they just don't work for me...they seem to squash all the dynamics and feel out of my playing...maybe I have not found the right one for me yet.
If you move from a switch mode to a linear power supply then you will notice a big improvement in tone and feel. Switch modes are great for digital circuits but really kill tone on analogue gear. I run two PSUs, a switch mode for my reverb and delay and a linear for drive, chorus, flanger, wah etc. If you don't know,: Switch mode power supplies 'sample' the rectified mains 50,000 times a second and dump that to a smoothing capacitor, this then goes through a voltage regulator. They are great for producing constant current for digital circuits and are cheap as chips. Linear power supplies have a heavy transformer that feeds into a rectifier, smoothing cap and regulator. They can produce sudden large current and voltage peaks which is superb for analogue circuits and with large smoothing caps can sound like battery. Here endeth the sermon.
Have you ever considered the Pedaltrain Volto power supply? That board would have a REALLY low current draw, so I think a Volto might be a good choice for you. Regardless, keep up the good work! :D
Hey Mary! Just a comment: right-angle plugs on your daisy chain would allow you to cable-tie the whole power cables "inside" the footprint of your Nano+. I have a smaller Nano with a TC HOF, Flashback, corona mini and an AMT C2 pedal, and all that fits with no dangling cables. (www.guitarcenter.com/Outlaw-Effects/Outlaw-9V-DC-5-Way-Daisy-Chain-Cable.gc)
Hi Mary Just Watched a Video of You working a new song and ended up here. I just was wondering if you have seen a Poly Tune ( By T.C. Electronics )They Give You Awesome sizes but Best of all the Ability to strum all the Strings at once and see if any are out of tune. It is my Favorite tuner of all Times. I am Hoping to even Grab A clip-on Headstock Model Too ...Please Check into this....
There is a kinda proper order of a line up of pedals. Now I don't have an effects loop. So I run 2 pedals right into the front of my Modified Jet City JCA 20H which is running into a Marshall 412 Loaded with Scumback M75 & H75 speakers also Celestion Greenbacks on the bottom. VERY woody and Old School Marshall sounding. Think late 70's early 80's. So I run a early 90's TS9 Tube screamer of course. Mostly for heavy Metal and Solos but the amp has Really nice Gain and a very Cheap $20 Dollar JoYo delay pedal in the front of my amp dirty. Now normally that would sound horrible but.... The very Cheap JoYo has an incredible advantage over the $200 Dollar delay pedals I tried. It's able to be turned down on the level or mix knob so low that I'm able to control the delay so well I can run the delay right into the front of my dirty Overdriven Amp without having it go crazy with Echos. If you don't have an effects loop but still want to use a delay try the JoYo Digital delay pedal it's the dirty brownish gold looking one with an bird or something on it. Lol it sounds Incredible into a dirty amp that's not super high gain. My amp is stock Marshall Pre Amp gain levels so think Stock JCM 800. The JoYo Digital delay also does one more little thing that I absolutely love and is why I run it all the time even if it's not delaying I just drop the level all the way. The pedal adds a very tiny clean buffered boost. Its almost like a Marshall sounded while running an old Echoplex into the front. Slight clean boost that makes a stock Marshall type amp Sing like a BIRD!!! Kinda funny the pedal has some kinda bird on the front..... Lol Sorry I go on sometimes for a while. Great Video and Killer Pedal board!!!! I may try your delay to see how it sounds into my amp!! 😉
What a strange coincidence..did you know that I use only Klotz and MXR...I only have 5 MXR but I have about 20 or 25 Klotz...for me Klotz are the best only because I've had them for so, so long and I step on them by accident and twist them every which way and not a single one has ever broken on me.
Hello Mary about the patch cables I also use Klotz and MXR. I have about 30 Klotz patch cables and only 4 MXR. In the years I've used Klotz I've never had a single one break down but the MXR ones are quite bad, so many of them have stopped working after 2 and 3 weeks that I just gave up on MXR patch cables. Maybe I got a bad batch but they were quite a few. Cheers.
Hello Mary Spender...what a beautiful name - "Mary"...it just rolls off the tongue so naturally...anyway, my name's Mike and I thought I would give you some advice just because I've been playing for just over 30 years and you don't seem to be 30 yet so I might have just a little advantage...you said that "there is a right and wrong" and that is true....but...at the same time it's not true, I know this may not make sense but for me to explain what I mean I'd have to write at least a couple of pages...so just keep on playing. Bye. Mike.
Mary you paid way too much for your pedal. You should check ebay as well a pond shops. I bought a Boss 70 on ebay for 135.00 new it is 3 to 4 hundred... Have fun rock and roll...
How does one send something to you I have an OCD CLONE IM MEAN STRAIGHT UP COUNTER FIT. I do use because I use v2 ocd. This sounds a lot like a v4 it’s pretty but rolls back clean quite nicely my friends give me this stuff to trip me up not understanding that most clones may cosmetically look identical but there’s things that just aren’t the. The has the an ocd clone and Timmy. The Timmy is ridiculously hot. One the I will say when u get the drive we’re like it truly have the creamy sound as the ocd not as good but pretty close. I think you love to record with it. It woks with situations because they’re but like tanks. Many ocd users use to use these be cause the were tougher had hand the road better. But ocd fixed that problem that got fixed. I will say has most of its sound than the ocd I liked it because if wanted to do blistering lead it made my amps feed back nicely it’s about mid to hi out put and it’s yours. I I’m retired studio/ touring guitarist and drummer. I got my guitar chops back mostly because I had to figure out the things that took for granted. And when see people making music on there own it makes me happy because how many artists that screwed it would blow your mind. We got salaries plus per-diemso you wouldn’t believe how many peeps we fed paid the cleaning of stage stuff. But they a little clout they hired us I need to know how to get it to u it may be a little while but I will get it there. Also I have 2 pedal train in the there gig bags that they came in I might keep one but I’m only around Nashville and other clubs in the south, and we to sneak to have the shows. But it’s not a problem. If a need a little money getting this stuff to I will obvious handle the bulk and can help on your end where your. All you have to do is help get these peeps like your self to make us some good music with to much industry influence....keep it up love. Oh I use 2 50watt ELH mig50s and have for 6 years. This is not an endorsement. They just make awesome shit.
Neat board that co-ordinates well with your white Vigier. You could really hear the value of the compressor. As to the order of pedals, as Mick and Dan from That Pedal Show have oft repeated, "there is no right or wrong, but whatever works for you" and yours certainly does. Great sounds and lovely background song.
500 pound or 600 dollar......what is that in euros half the western continent uses euros (europe) last i checked england is closer to europe than to america??
My suggestion to you, get rid of that Boss tuner pedal and it will save you a lot of room in your pedal board, better yet you can make a room for another pedal. Instead, buy a headstock chromatic or piezo tuner, there's a lot of high quality ones nowadays, not to mention they are a quick-tuner and cheaper than tuner pedal, (i.e Super tight Snark, TC electronics, Korg, etc.)...:)
sorry but... I don't get that pedaltrain... its just more practical to velcro the pedals on a large case. When you need to use, just remove the upper part and go. The pedaltrain don't protect the DC plugs at all. The plugs stick outside of the board. The main reason to use a board its to preserve connections from being stressed by plugging/unplugging everytime you play. You just leave it plugged and close the case. But this small thing demands you to unplug it every time. Mehhhh....And... its too expensive for a piece of metal. You can basically do one for free with wood, a saw and glue, and can be even lighter. Also, daisy chain? Good luck dealing with noise. That thing is basically an anthena.
Good video Mary...very understandable for the noob and informative for the veteran. I've been at this a long time and can't keep up with ElectroHarmonix's offerings anymore. So I'm glad you brought the Turnip Greens to my attention. That is a useful combo for what I play. BTW, your actual pedal board and power supply (aka the Pedaltrain Nano and One Spot) are the same as I use for my bass guitar rig. My elrctric guitar rig is more akin to looking like NASA was involved in its development. lol You've given me the impetus and a raison d'être to simplify my guitar rig. I'm glad you mentioned your two recordings. I'm off to your website to purchase them as I enjoy your music and am all about supporting the Indie artists that have real talent and developed chops.
I met you at Anderton's online and decided to check out your channel after you went to Anderton's and compared the Fender/Orange amplifiers. You know pedals, that's for sure. That Turnip Greens is really cool, but the Mooer is a really nice ambient effect pedal, too. Great stuff.
Hi Mary, Can you comment on how you use your Yamaha monitors. I love the sound of my HS5 pair, but like you I have to run them close to the wall. Do you feel you have to work around there placement or are you perfectly happy with the sound they create for the job your bought them for? I know too many words :-( Any advice greatly appreciated.
Mary - do you ever use something like a Line 6 Helix (LT or otherwise) for your solo stuff? Seems like it would be great for a solo artist like you and the Helix LT seems to be pretty budget friendly all things considered.
I’m not John Mayer but if I could recommend a chain for your board I would tell you that you need to switch some stuff around. Typically, you put tuner first (to keep your signal to the tuner clean for the best tune), followed by compressor (to ensure that what’s being compressed isn’t being altered by other effects), followed by fuzz (which you don’t have so no worries), after that some people put certain modulate effects such as octave and some people even put their harmonizers here to make sure they get clean octaves and harmonies, following that is all your grit (distortion, overdrive, transparent drive, etc.), after that, is all your modulation stuff (phaser, tremolo, vibrato, rotary, etc.), following that is delay pedals( some people decide to order them by their type e.g. analog, tape, digital), finally goes reverb pedals. For your order I would recommend putting the EHX turnip greens after your compressor and putting your delay last. Just my personal opinion though lol. I play mainly blues and worship music so the way I order pedals is designed around getting certain sounds and tones.
