I find a 1973 Westsail 32 sailboat that I might like to buy, so I travel 8 hours to look her over to determine if she's the boat for me.

Hi there, yes I saw a lot things that you did point out, but let's face, all those issues are basically maintenance, and inherent to the boats regardless yes, those hinges at ruder was a little thin, but if it sounds, it would last. Now breaking down: You did'nt mention the price tag on that boat, but anything bellow U$15 thou, it is worth. Another thing, we think we need ervery thing new, overdone, beefy, load with every possible gadgets...NO, no, we need be confidant with what you we got, simple is better, buy cheap, enjoy cheap, and salle it cheap, anything in between, is all fun. Ps: You mention you need a cleet on the middle of the boat, and bla,bla,bla instead, put a clit inside the boat. LOL Cheers from Brazil!

You can just see Colin Archer's influence in the design of these Westsail 32's. If I'm not mistaken they're fondly referred to as the Beetle of the seas, a great compliment to be sure, since I'm too lazy to double check myself please correct me if my assumption that these boats are a Bill Crealock design based on Archer's iconic Norwegian double ended lifeboat designs that influenced him, Harwood Ives (Hans Christians except the 34') and Bob Perry (the HC 34', tayana 37 and Vancouver 42, probably the Valiant 40 and 42 as well????) Almost all your iconic canoe stern/double enders have an Archer influence and most were designed by the above designers. All are great sea boats and are a tried and tested century old heavy weather displacement long keel design that's saved thousands of lives at sea for a long time, I'd have one in a heartbeat wete it not for me finding a 7 year old hard chine steel Van De Stadt 34' in blue water high latitude expedition capable certified condition, you can not go wrong with a steel boat if you are a fabricator/coded welder with EU shipbuilding experience😎😎

My research on these remarkable “heavy” vessels has led me to look for the hp rating. I don’t think anything less than 36 hp will do. 50hp seems to be on a wish list for many, me included, buyers.
@VoyageDreams
@VoyageDreams 3 года назад
Yes, that's definitely a factor I consider. I generally prefer to see an inboard with 1hp for every 500 lbs of displacement, though this is not of great concern to me on smaller, lighter displacement boats.

No, don't do it. Pass on the W32. Even if in better shape, you'll want to trade it in for a different boat in a few months. Expensive lesson in what boat is meant for you. Don't pay attention to me, I'm channeling my own desires in a boat. My first goto are the numbers - and this is one heavy slow sailing hull. Although the capsize formula at 1.6 which is excellent, (anything below 2 is desireable. Most boats are at 2 exactly) so you can't outrun a reef, but you won't go turtle up. Long keel, fin keel, cutaway doesn't matter to me; I prefer maneuverability above all else because I'm shitty on engines, and will have to sail my way out of trouble. Also a minimalist, no fridge no aircon, no harm (been sailing in the tropics for years, love a wide brim hat) tech today has miniaturized a lot of sailing tools (ipad, bad elf, navionic charts and a sextant for backup) However if set on the Westsail profile, I'd look for a Cape George 31, or 36.

Hi Owen , a lot of W32's were owner finished . I suspect the builder by passed the stock rudder set up by Westsail for what you found to save money (my thought) . I can't believe someone would do that . It's boats like this that give Westsail's a bad name . If you are after a Westsail , please join us over at the owners group . Also on Buds site there are a lot of W32's for sale . Owners site . www.westsail.org/homepage Buds site . www.westsail.com/

Bloody good deal whatever the condition👍 Sadly I'm currently negotiating final sale price (a bit more than 3.5) for a 7 year old steel Van De Stadt 34' with the taller fractional performance rig built to Lloyds register ocean going ice rated specifications. A little more bulletproof than the Westsail, and although not a fast boat with a 8/9 knot hull speed she'll leave a Westsail for dead😀😎

The best boat for you is a Catalina 27, if you currently have a Tanzer 22, given your comments about this W32, the Catalina 27 is the boat for you, given your boat shopping Chevrolet budget (please don’t take offence - been there) The Catalina 27 is the Chevrolet of the production sailboat genre. You can get them inboard or outboard powered. You can sleep on it, cook and eat on it, and pee and poop on it, and when it is pissing down rain, heat it and play cards with your partner, or kick back and read in your bunk. I have seen them in all states of condition and sale, from “free to $20kCDN. I say all this because you were talking about having to go to the Bank for a loan. I understand, but if you have to do that, let’s make it a SMALL loan; no fun falling in love with some boat you are forced to sell someday because you encounter financial troubled waters…… I think your instincts re THIS W32 were good. To get Bud Taplin (the Dali Lama of Westsails) involved re replacing standing rigging (chainplates looked in very good shape), boomkin changeout, and re&re of gudgeons and pintles to Bud’s specs, you would have to have got the boat for $20k. I say all this being the owner of a W32, to which you have an open invite to visit and sail on. Think about my comments. I have a feel, with your financial context in mind a Catalina 27 fits your bill. If everything works out and you go the C27 route, you will undoubtedly acquire the worst of sailing diseases: “Two-Footitis”. “My ideal boat is just two feet bigger.” Hey, you should know, some people have taken c27’s around the world! Nothing more fun than looking around to fall in love - with a sailboat! Vernon in West Vancouver
